FEEDING THE WORLD

W ith today’s two accounts of feeding miracles and the psalm re-sponse about the Lord’s hand feeding us, it is

easy to gloss over the marvelous hymn in Ephesians. It is built around the most potent biblical numbers: one, three, and seven. The core of it is the word “one” expressed seven times. Three of these de-scribe the church: one body, one Spirit, one hope; the next three are the foundations of the church: one Lord [Jesus], one faith, one baptism. All of these are bound up together in the one Father of all. While we might feel daunted by the prospect of duplicating the wonders worked by Elisha and Jesus in the feeding of multitudes, Ephesians gives us a more realistic way to live and “feed” others as the church: by living in humility and gentleness, by acting with patience, bearing with each other in love, and always seeking and striving to preserve unity through peace. Who among us cannot increase the way we “feed” the church and the world by living this way? TEACHING THE OLD TESTAMENT

T he Second Vatican Council teaches that “the treasures of the Bible are to be opened more lavishly, so that richer

fare may be provided for the faithful at the table of God’s Word “(Constitution on the Sacred Litur-gy, 51). Is the Bible a special table around which your family gathers, as if for a favorite meal? Testament “are a storehouse of sublime teaching on God and of sound wisdom on human life, as well as a wonderful treasury of prayers; in them, too, the mystery of our salvation is present in a hidden way.” (CCC 122, quoting Dei Verbum 15)Much of the Old Testament takes the form of stories. The way God teaches resounds with human imagina-tion. Through the rich tapestry of biblical narratives we learn about God’s love and fidelity in the face of human doubt, apathy and infidelity. In the drama of the biblical stories is reflected our own journeys of faith with our daily joys, struggles, and hopes. Old Testament stories are especially compelling for young children who, with their natural capacity for awe and wonder, marvel at the unfolding of God’s saving action and living presence in the world. Bib-lical stories that reveal weakness and sin are oppor-tunities to discuss, at age appropriate levels, our hu-manness in light of God’s love and mercy. Through the biblical range of human experiences we learn God’s ways and our response of faith. To bring the Old Testament to life, assign family members to gather artistic images that depict biblical stories and themes. Let the painting, sculpture, stained glass, or piece of sacred music serve as a discussion starter for family reflection on God’s word expressed in ar-tistic forms. PRAYER BEFORE THE BLESSED SACRAMENT

M y Lord Jesus Christ, for the love which You bear to men, You remain night

and day in this Sacrament full of com-passion and of love, awaiting, calling, and welcoming all who come to visit You. I believe that You are present in the Sacrament of the Altar: I adore You from the abyss of my nothingness, and I thank You for all the graces which You have bestowed upon me and in particu-lar for having given me Yourself in this Sacrament, for having given me your holy Mother Mary for my ad-vocate, and for having called me to visit You in this chapel. I now salute your most loving Heart: and this for three ends: 1. In thanksgiving for this great gift; 2. To make amends to You for all the outrages which You receive in this Sacrament from all Your en-emies; 3. I intend by this visit to adore You in all the places on earth in which You are the least revered and the most abandoned. My Jesus, I love You with all my heart. I grieve for having so many times of-fended Your infinite goodness. I promise with Your grace never more to offend You in the future. Now, miserable and unworthy though I be, I consecrate my-

self to You without reserve; I give You my entire will, my affections, my desires, and all that I pos-sess. From now on dispose of me and of all that I have as You please. All that I ask of You and desire is Your holy love, final perseverance, and the perfect accomplishment of Your will. I recommend to You the souls in purgatory; but especially those who had the greatest devotion to the most Blessed Sacrament and to the Blessed Virgin Mary. I also recommend to You all poor sinners. My dear Saviour, I unite all my af-fections with the affections of Your most loving Heart; and I offer them, thus united, to Your eternal Father, and beseech Him in Your name to vouchsafe, for Your love, to accept them. Amen.

PROBLEM SOLVE THROUGH COMMUNICATION

Often the easiest response to complicated conversa-tions is a generic one, but these mo-ments can be opportunities to help children grow. For example, if a child comes to you and tells you that a friend is being left out of social activ-ities, you might respond with a ques-tion: “Do you think there is anything you can do help him/her feel more included?” Or if your child comes to you for money for social activities, instead of of-fering a solution, you might prompt them to consider ways that they could earn money or fundraise on their own. In this way, you are not only helping a child find a solution to an immediate situation, but also helping them to grow in wisdom and prudence.
