STRETCH RUN: For the 2nd consecutive night, the Hooks gained a game on the Frisco RoughRiders. Corpus Christi leads Frisco by 4.5 games with 8 remaining in the Texas League South 2nd-half pennant race. The Hooks’ “magic number” to clinch the 2nd-half title is 4. Corpus Christi, the TL South 1st-half champs, boast the best record in Double-A at 79-51 (.608). The Hooks have ran the table only once in their 13-year history. The 2013 club went 83-57 to win both halves. The franchise’s best overall record came in 2015 when the team won 89 and lost 51. JONES RETURNS: 1B Taylor Jones is 1-for-8 with a double in his return from the Pacific Coast League. Jones is batting .317 with 24 doubles, 12 home runs, 58 RBIs and a .956 OPS in 77 games for the Hooks. The Texas League All-Star Game MVP had last played for the Hooks on July 28, going 4-for-4 with a double and 2 RBIs vs. Midland. Jones was originally promoted to Fresno following the all-star break when the led the circuit with a .987 OPS. At the time, he also ranked among the TL leaders in RBIs (53, 2nd), doubles (3rd), total bases (140, 3rd), extra-base hits (34, 4th) and batting average (5th). The Gonzaga product batted .210 with 7 doubles, 5 home runs, and 17 RBIs in 39 games for Fresno. Jones homered in his Triple-A debut on June 28 at El Paso. SWING AND A MISS: Hooks hurlers have reached double-digit strikeout totals in each of the last 4 games. During this stretch, Corpus Christi has struck out 51 and issued 12 walks in 37.0 innings. The Hooks have struck out 1,255 this season (9.8 K per 9 IP), which leads Double-A and stands as the Texas League record. San Antonio penned 1,186 strikeouts last season to set the circuit standard. The previous Hooks record for strikeouts in a season is 1,132, notched in 2016. Quad Cities, the Astros’ Mid-west League affiliate, currently leads Minor League Baseball with 1,429 strikeouts (11.0 K per 9 IP). REHAB REPORT: Astros C Brian McCann plated 3 of the 4 Hooks runs last night, making him 3-for-13 with 1 home run and 3 RBIs in 4 rehab games with the Hooks. McCann, who underwent surgery on July 3 to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee, has caught 12 innings over 2 separate assignments for Corpus Christi. The 7-time All-Star and 6-time Silver Slugger Award winner was 1-for-7 with 1 run and 1 walk in 2 rehab games with Fresno. Astros right-hander Chris Devenski yielded a lead-off home run to Peter Van Gansen while working 1.0-plus innings last night. Devenski has been charged with 4 runs on 7 hits (2 HR) in his 3 rehab outings with the Hooks. He has struck out 6 in 3.0 Texas League frames. McCann is one of four catchers in the modern era to hit at least 20 home runs in 10-or-more seasons, joining Mike Piazza, Johnny Bench, and Yogi Berra. Last year, the Georgia native belted 18 dingers and helped lead the Astros to their first World Series title. McCann is in his 14th Major League campaign, and this run through Fresno and Corpus Christi is his first Minor League action since a rehab stint with Single-A Rome and Triple-A Gwinnett in 2013. Devenski, the 2015 Hooks Pitcher of the Year, worked for the Grizzlies on August 14 and August 17, striking out 4 over 1.2 scoreless innings. Devenski has been on the disabled list since July 31 with right hamstring tightness. Devenski posted a 1.73 ERA and .190 batting average against over his first 38 appearances with the Astros this season. Of the 18 runs he has allowed, 11 have come in the last 4 Houston appearances (July 12-27). The 27-year-old right-hander earned American League All-Star honors last season, going 8-5 with a 2.68 ERA and 100 strikeouts in 62 outings (80.2 IP). Devenski led all Astros relievers with 10 postseason appearances. He earned the decision in Game 2 of the World Series at Dodger Sta-dium, becoming the first pitcher in Astros history to pick up a Fall Classic win.
