Week 10, Term 3

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

NAPLAN Results

All students in Years 3 and 5 received their NAPLAN results last week. Below is a

graph which shows the percentage of students at Samuel Terry Public School

who have achieved in the top two bands over the past 5 years. As you may be

aware, our school was given the target of increasing the number of students

achieving in the top two bands by 6% from 2015 to 2018. As the graph shows, we

have greatly exceeded this target with an increase of 13.79% of students in the

top two bands. Congratulations to all students, staff and families – a great team

effort!

The R U OK? Day activities at the school last Tuesday focussed on cyber safety

and anti-bullying strategies. These messages were combined with reminders of

connecting regularly and meaningfully with friends and family members to help

make a positive difference in someone else’s life. A parent workshop was

organised through a professional cybersafety provider who also presented to each

grade across the school throughout the day. A highlight of the day was the RU

OK? assembly organised by Mrs Hudson which included speakers Joe Galuvao

and Darius Boyd (via video). The very talented Shafee from Cranebrook HS performed a song

specifically written by him for our students which perfectly reflected the core themes for the day. Our

chaplain and school counsellor (Anthony & Laura) presented an excellent sketch which modelled to our

students how to help others who are feeling down if they see them on the school playground.

I would also like to congratulate and thank Natalie for her organisational work in selling fundraising

merchandise for the cause and for introducing RU OK? Day to Samuel Terry Public School.

End of term

September 28 is the last day of Term 3. It has been an extremely busy and productive term. We wish all

students and their families an enjoyable and safe holiday period. Students and staff return to school on

Stage 2 News

Thank you parents and caregivers for your generosity and assistance given over the course of a very busy term. We simply could not get through the sporting events, dance events, parades, open day, fundraisers as well as the curricular expectations without your ongoing support. It is very much appreciated.

Please take the time to check the lost property container (located in the tunnel adjacent to the of-fice) as there are many jumpers, jackets, hats and an assortment of food and drink containers that have accumulated over the term. If you are missing anything it will more than likely be in the container.

A reminder that all student are required to be in full summer uniform (including a school hat) on their return to school next term. All uniform items are available to purchase through the uniform shop.

Please note there is no pupil-free day at the beginning of Term 4. Students return to school on Monday 15th October.

I congratulate all Stage 2 students on their hard work this term. I wish all students and families a

restful break and look forward to Term 4.

R U OK? Day:

Congratulations and thank you to all students and community members who

took part in our R U OK? Day last Tuesday 18th September. It was wonderful to see students dressed in

yellow, in support of and raising awareness for this important community initiative. All students took part

in a whole school assembly in the morning where they learnt about how to ask someone if they are ok,

how to deal with and respond to bullying as well as the importance of looking out for our friends. We

were also privileged to have been sent a message from Darius Boyd about R U OK? Day as well as had

Joe Galuvao speak with the students about taking care of their mental health. Students then took part in

a very important cyber safety education session presented by Yasmin London from ySafe Solutions.

Students learnt about how to keep themselves safe online, the risks of online gaming and social media

and responsible digital citizenship. A wonderful day of awareness and education for all students at

Samuel Terry Public School.

Year 6 fundraiser—Year 6 vs teacher netball game: A HUGE thanks!!

Thank you to the students and families who made donations to our Year 6 fundraising event held last

Friday 21st September. We sincerely appreciated all of the items donated to sell at the cake stall, and

along with the mufti day takings, managed to raise more than $1,100 that will go towards Year 6 end of

year activities. What an amazing effort Samuel Terry!

Year 6 students played a thrilling netball match, but the teachers were victorious, winning the match 20-

10. A huge thanks to all students and teachers who played, as well as Miss Gray, Tankiah and Tara for

umpiring the game. On behalf of Year 6 students and teachers, we would like to thank the students and

families of Samuel Terry for their generous support. It is truly appreciated.

Public Speaking Competition:

Congratulations to all students who took part in the first round of the Public Speaking Competition, the

class speeches. It was lovely to listen to the speeches and hear the effort that students had put in.

Congratulations Stage 3 students! The school final will be held on Tuesday 23rd October in the school

hall. We wish all students who have progressed to the school final the best of luck.

STAGE 3 NEWS!

Year 6 Fun Day:

Year 6 Fun Day will be held in Term 4 on Tuesday 13th November (Week 5). Early

next term, students will be given the opportunity to decide who they want to run a

stall with for Fun Day and what activity they will be running on the day. Some of the

activities that students might run on the day include; face painting, spider drinks,

obstacle course, cake stall, disco, tattoos, coloured hairspray, sponge throwing,

video games, footy passing, haunted house, nail painting and many more.

We are now asking for donations of prizes and other items needed for the day. Some items include

sweet treats to sell at the cake stall, soft drinks, plastic cups, straws, lollies, coloured hair spray, face

paint and face painting equipment and tattoos to name a few. Please note Year 6 students are

responsible for ensuring all items needed for their activity are ready prior to the day. This includes any

equipment, prizes etc. Year 6 students will be given time with their partner/groups to organise their

activities next term. All money raised from Year 6 Fun Day will go towards the Year 6 Farewell and end

of year celebrations.

Uniform:

Please ensure that your child is dressed in full school uniform. This includes school hat, grey socks for

boys, white socks for girls and a blue jacket or jumper. We also ask that our students ensure their shirts

are tucked in. All students must wear their school hat whilst out in the playground. Due to safety issues,

students are not permitted to wear jewellery at school. The only jewellery that is acceptable is small

plain studs or sleepers for girls and boys. Any other jewellery including bracelets, bangles, necklaces,

anklets etc should not be worn to school.

Class home reading libraries:

It is fantastic to see so many students enjoying the wonderful selection of books available

in the class home reading libraries. Students are reminded to borrow a book or two to

keep them busy during the holidays. Happy holiday reading Stage 3 students!

Happy Holidays!:

On behalf of all Stage 3 teachers, we wish all students a safe and restful break. We congratulate all

students on their application to their schoolwork this term and look forward to an exciting Term 4 filled

with lots of learning and many wonderful school activities.
