In the last issue of Argus Eyes,I commented on the enthusiastic re-ception of our products at the Pho-tographic Show in Chicago. I alsoemphasized that each of us had a bigjob ahead of us to make this NewProducts Program a success. Sincethat time, practically everyone hasbeen involved in one way or anotherwith some of the problems that comeup in getting a new product started.One of the greatest responsibilitieseach of us has in this connection isthat of maintaining our standards forquality.

For years, Argus has held an ex-cellent reputation with our consum-ers and dealers because of the goodquality of our products. One of thereasons that we are a leader in the35mm field is this standard of qual-ity. This same standard will applyto our movie products. We expectto gain the same stature in the ama-teur movie field as we have had inthe 35mm field. For that reasonthe feature article in this issue isbased on our quality responsibility.

OUR CUSTOMERS ARE OUR BOSSES

The people who will buy new Ar-gus products for their personal usemust be assured that they are buy-ing a product which has an excel-lent appearance and is the best inperformance. They must be offereda product of which they will beproud because of its over-all quali-ty. "Customer satisfaction and prideof ownership" is more than an ad-vertising phrase. We receive manyletters complimenting Argus for itsproduct quality.

For example, in a letter receivedrecently, a customer writes:

"A few days ago I purchased anArgus projector Model 300 aftercomparing five leading brands. Iselected the Argus chiefly becauseit gave a brighter and sharperpicture than the others. Theslides seemed to come alive onthe screen, even some I didn'tthink too well of when used in myold projector. I decided to let youknow that I appreciate a good prod-uct. "(We get a few letters of the other

kind, too, but they1 re fortunatelyvery much in the minority.)

The best thing that can happen toensure the growth of Argus and thesecurity of our jobs is a successfulNew Products Program. It bearsrepeating that much of the success

of this Program depends upon ourefforts in the field of quality. Manyof us perform jobs which are deli-cate or precise, and which are mostimportant in meeting the criticalspecifications of our products. It isthe sum of these individual effortsthat produces the Argus product, su-perior in appearance and perform-ance.

QUALITY IS UP TO THE INDIVID-UAL

No amount of good advertising,salesmanship, or design can everreplace each individuals own responsibility for quality. It not only af-fects the customer but it also affectseach of us in his daily attitude towardhis job. We have more pride inour workmanship and accomplish-ment when we refuse to compromisewith quality.

There are many ways we exerciseour quality responsibility in a con-

crete, every-day manner. Some ofthese are:

1. Critical appraisal and inspec-tion of our own work.

2. Suggestions that improve thequality of our products.

3. Recognition of ability to pro-duce good work.

4. Effective encouragement andaid by supervision.

5. Cooperation in solving qualityproblems.

CURRENT BUSINESS REPORTWe have now completed the first

four months of our calendar year.These were the months in which weran special close-out promotions onmany of our products in order topave the way for sales of our new1958 line. These promotions werequite successful and we have beenable to introduce our new productson schedule. Following the generaltrend of business conditions, how-ever, our sales volume this year islower than it was last year and prof-its have been depressed even more.Because of increasingly competitiveconditions in the field, price levelsof photographic products are trend-ing downward. This means that wemust continue to operate as efficient-ly as possible, avoiding unnecessaryexpenditures of any kind.

KEN TRUEMilitary Sales Manager

Military Sales Manager, Ken True,recently returned from an excitingfive-day south Atlantic cruise aboardthe aircraft carrier U.S.S. LakeChamplain C.V.S. 39 as a guest ofNavy Secretary Thomas Gates. Kenwas hosted aboard ship by a long-time friend Commander Walter Coop-er who is Chief gunnery officer ofthe Champlain.

During the five days at sea, Kenwatched the task force run throughsub chasing and anti-aircraft maneu-vers. He was also treated to sev-eral helicopter flights including the

task force mail run and observationflights. While aboard he met andchatted with the flagship officer ofthe force, Admiral Butts.

Culminating the week-long adven-ture was a flight from the carrier300 miles at sea to Norfolk, Va. ina twin engined Gumman S2F searchplane.

This experience was something ofa first for both Ken and Argus,since it marks the first time a NavyDepartment supplier has been a ship-board guest during operational ma-neuvers.

STOCK OPTION PLANI see that the Company has an-

nounced a Stock Option Plan in whichany and all employees may partici-pate. At present, I donft know toomuch about the Plan except that itis going to give me a chance to buyshares of ownership in the CompanyI work for. Never thought of it be-fore but this practically makes memy own boss. Don't know if FUlike that arrangement. Anyway,getting back to the Plan, all of uswill be getting detailed informationon its operation and how we go aboutbuying, etc., and any other infor-mation pertinent to the matter. In-cidentally, one detail I do know aboutthe Plan is that we can use payrolldeduction to buy. Thatfs for me!

in Detroit these days and Pm hopingI can get similar results at Inde-pendence Lake. Herman Bauer whois again overseeing the RecreationClub's projects this year tells methat a list of things to do will beposted at the Lake so that anyonein a working mood will not be at aloss for projects to keep him busy.

BON VOYAGEChecking around recently, I found

that nine people from Argus are in-tending to make the European Tourflight with 71 other Sylvania em-ployees. They leave Willow Run onFriday, July 18 and return Sunday,August 3rd. Between those dates,the group will visit Rome, Florence,Venice, Paris and Brussels. Allthis for a handsomely low price.Several members of the group havepromised pictures for a later issueof the "Eyes".

"SPOUSE INSPIRED IDEAS"The following is directed to the wives and husbands of Argus em-

ployees .Our suggestion committee is interested in all kinds of suggestions

and particularly those that offer a cost-cutting solution to a productionor maintenance problem.

How many times have you heard your spouse say, "If they would onlyask me. . . ." or "If they would only listen to me. . . ." All employeeshave ideas on how the Company can improve its operation.

Well, the next time he or she comes up with one of these comments(or any other mild type brainstorm), you just pull out the suggestionblank accompanying this issue of the Eyes and say, "All right, kiddo,here's our chance! Write it down, right now, and let's find out justwhat it is worth."

The suggestion committee is not prepared to arbitrate just how youand your spouse should split up the award, but they presume a work-able agreement can be reached.

The formulation of a Fire Bri-gade here at Argus will do a greatdeal to insure the safety of everyemployee. Each department has twobrigade members who are in mostcases that department's supervisors.

Brigade members are receivingspecial instructions (see photo) inall phases of fire prevention andemergency evacuation procedure.As part of this accelerated program,fire drills will be conducted periodi-cally in which all employees willparticipate.

recently announced that the U.S.Government has picked their radical-ly new "Sylouette" TV Console toexhibit at the World's Fair current-ly in progress at Brussels, Bel-gium.

This fine new design has capturedthe imagination of the American pub-lic in the few short months it hasbeen on the market and our com-petition has already answered withsets of similar design. However,without Sylvania's exclusive featureHalolight, the competition thus faris a compromise on our design atbest.

The TV set Division is particular-ly proud of the fact that this is theonly black and white TV set dis-_played in the U.S. Exhibit. They"

like to think of it as the only thingreally new in TV, even newer thancolor.

Irv Halman ElectedJ.C.C. National Director

Irv Halman ( P u r c h a s i n g ) waselected to one of six national direc-tors posts for the Michigan Jayceesat the organizations state conven-tion held in Grand Rapids, May 16through 18.

Irv has been active in the Jay-cees for over 6 years, serving inmany local and state posts. He isa past President of the Ann ArborChapter and a former member ofthe local board of directors.

ALAKE AREA OPENS

Independence Lake Recreation area is now open forthe summer season. The area caretaker has been onthe job for over a month cleaning, painting and in gen-eral making ready for what will likely be the busiestseasons the area has ever experienced. A steady in-crease in the use of the Lake site by employees and

their families has occurred every year since the Com-pany leased the property six years ago. *

Many changes are being planned by the EmployeeRecreation Club to improve the already existing facil-ties which will make the area an even more desirableplace for employees and their families to spend leisurehours during the summer months.

NEW CLUB OFFICERS ASSUME POSITION FOR 1958-59

During the last week of April,employees elected a full staff of of-ficers and representatives to oper-ate the Employee Recreation Clubfor the 1958-59 activities year. Newofficers are John Borgerson (Dept.49), President, Bill Betke (Dept.49), Vice President, Jesse Forshee(Dept. 81), Secretary and Ralph Mer-rell (Dept. 70), Treasurer.

Departments are grouped in areasof geographical location with onerepresentative for every one hundred

employees. In cases where a de-partment is separated from the restof the plant such as Shipping Depart-ment at South State Street, a repre-sentative is chosen for the groupregardless of their numerical size.This operating committee plans andcarries out all the Club's functionswhich include the picnics, dancesand the sponsorship of the sportsleagues. One of their most impor-tant functions is planning the use ofthe 150 acre Recreation area at In-dependence Lake. Most of the club'srevenue is spent in running this areabecause more members make useof the facility than any other func-tion sponsored by the club.

NEW KEYS AND CARDSWith the purchase of a 1953-59

Recreation Club Card employees mayobtain a key which will permit themto gain entrance to the Lake area.The locks have been changed fromlast year so that new keys will berequired. The old keys may be ex-changed for new keys through Clubrepresentatives. Employees who donot now have keys may obtain oneby depositing 35<? with their Clubrepresentative.

A NEW LOOK AT THE BIG WEAPON

IN THE BATTLE FOR BUSINESS

The word quality is one heard frequently by Argus employees. A great deal hasbeen said and even more has been written to explain the importance of quality in themanufacture of our products. The Photographic equipment field is noted for highquality standards, and any company intending to improve its competitive position mustnecessarily employ even higher quality standards as one means of capturing a biggershare of this market.

While any number of tangible elements affect the establishment and maintenance ofquality the end result is by and large an attitude which quality or lack of quality cre-ates in the dealers and consumers mind. Pride of ownership and the sense of valuereceived is largely the result of the manufacturers1 attention to quality.

Our concern with quality is generally in the area of manufacturing, but what of ourattitude towards the subject as consumers. By asking what quality means to some-one as a consumer, we can see another side of the story. Still another viewpointcan be obtained by asking employee, "How do you contribute to Argus quality?" Weasked the two foregoing questions of various persons and believe that their answersoffer "A New Look at a Big Weapon in the Battle for Business."

What Quality Means To Me.AS AN ARGUS SALESMAN

Of all the things that help to sellphotographic equipment, quality andprice are by far the most important.My customers are dealers and theyknow quality when they see it. Theyare also quick to point out any lackof quality. I must compete for saleson a quality level with cameras sell-ing for many dollars more than Ar-gus cameras. However, the Arguslifetime guarantee gives me a toolfor selling that many of my competi-tors must sell without. It providesmy dealers with assurance that hehas only to sell an Argus productand we (ARGUS) will stand behindit because we feel and can provethat the quality of our products issecond to none.

...AS A HOMEMAKER

I believe that most homemakerswant quality but must gear thosewants to the price they can pay.To me quality itself is a bargain.

In buying durable goods, I lookfor the brand name products andcheck their guarantee as a means ofdetermining quality. What does qual-ity mean to me? Well, I guess itmeans the chance to enjoy trouble-free service from any item I buy.

...AS A CAMERA DEALER

As a dealer I'm expected to standbehind the products I sell, eventhough I have no control of the man-ufacturer's policies on quality. How-ever, I do carry photographic equip-ment made by many different com-panies, and I have substantial influ-ence over what make of product mycustomers buy. It doesn't take ascholar to see that I would muchrather sell a camera that I knowwill be trouble-free than one whichis likely to be brought back by anunhappy customer who holds me re-sponsible for any defects in the cam-era I sold to him.

..AS A BILL PAYER

As a bill payer, I want to pay foran item or service just once, notthree or four times because of break-downs caused by poor quality. Itseems to me that every manufactur-er should be interested enough inhis product to make it right to startwith, and to stand behind it once itis sold. Those producers interestedin profit alone usually have a poorproduct to offer by comparison andthis is one reason brand names areusually my best buys.

How I Contributed To Argus Quality

Project EngineeringMy contribution to quality at Argus has been made by

working with the personnel in all phases of Manufacturing,Engineering and Purchasing.

The quality problems that arise during each day may bein the line of improving an individual part of the functionof the final product.

The fine cooperation received from each individual I con-tact helps me contribute and share in the fine quality of theproduct that is sent on to the dealer and the customer.

I would guess that a good many of the C4 and C44 cam-eras in the hands of Argus customers passed through mywork station on their way to completion. Maybe my personaltouch on them would make little difference to the person whobuys the camera, but I do know that without my efforts inmaintaining the quality standards set up for my work thatsame camera owner might be darned unhappy with Argus.It's fun to be out somewhere and see a total stranger busytaking pictures with a C44 that I probably helped put together,and it is doubly satisfying to feel that this same strangeris happy with his camera because of its fine quality whichis a result of my efforts together with those of my co-workers .

You know it is a long way from my operation to the fin-ished product, and there are times when it is hard to visual-ize what importance a certain close dimension that's givingme trouble has on the finished product. On the other hand,I do know that specifications are not set arbitrarily and thatthe attention I give to my work is one step in "Building aBetter Mouse Trap" as the saying goes. One bad part isn'tlikely to hurt me or the company to any degree, but a simplepyramid of one bad part here and there on a continuing basiswould probably help to discourage customers in wholesalelots and this is unhealthy for both of us.

Keeping the greenery green at Ar-gus is a big job and Ozzie facesdaily problems that would make

weekend lawn trimmers want to fight.Contending with foot traffic that

would do justice to an infantry pla-toon is just one of the woes beset-ting Mr. Hoeft. So, tread lightlyfriend, lightly.

HEALTH MEASURE

Like a good many physical mal-functions, diabetes may be presentin a person's system long before itseffects are felt. It is importantthen, to find and treat this condi-tion before the effects become seri-ous.

Just as chest x-rays have beenmade available in past years, acheck system to help employees de-termine their diabetic status willbe conducted by nurse Fran Watter-worth during June. Details of theprogram will be distributed soon.

MEN'S DAY SHIFT

After another successful bowlingseason, we have a repeat for cham-pionship. The Tool Room camethrough after a tough battle to takethe championship for the secondstraight year. The Tool Room teamwhich consists of G. Bock, R. Bult-man, William Fraser, D. Zemke,E. Rossbach and J. Sartori, hasearned the right to represent theArgus League in the house playoffsfor the Champion of ChampionsTournament. There was a three-way tie for second place between theThirsty-Five, Bud Twining Serviceand Green Hornets. A special rolloff was arranged between these threeteams with the Green Hornets takingsecond, Bud Twining Service thirdand Thirsty Five fourth. In addi-tion to being in second place, theGreen Hornets also will representArgus league in the house playoffsfor the Champion of ChampionsTournament.

The Bowling Banquet was held atthe Moose Lodge and a very finedinner was put on by the Ladies ofthe Moose. After the completion ofthe dinner, the position money andindividual prizes were handed out.Jim Fraser ended the season withhigh single game (actual) of 276 andalso had the highest three-game se-ries (actual) of 650. G. Bock rolledthe high single game with handicapof 278 and the high series with handi-cap of 654. Gene Rossbach receivedthe merit award for raising his av-erage the most from a certain date.Chuck McClune again captured thehonor for having the highest averageat the end of the year of 177. 8 pins.

est annoyance duringthe hot •summer months?Although "It ain't theheat, but the humidity"has been quoted so of-ten as to become anational folk-saying, arecent survey showsthat the American pub-lic bears up under theheat and humidity bet-ter than it does the toof a m i l i a r attention offlies and mosquitoes,and the constant slam-and-bang of s c r e e ndoors.

Because these insectsare known transmittersof dangerous diseases, State and Federal GovernmentHealth Departments have long conducted research on in-secticides. Recently, the U.S. Department of Health,Education, and Welfare announced an insecticide, DDVP,which is believed to be more effective than the earlierDDT. Many insect strains have developed which are re-sistant to the old DDT, and also the new DDVP is con-sidered less potentially harmful to human beings.

It is important to take steps to destroy the breedingplaces of flies and mosquitoes, and equally important tokeep them out of the house. Screen doors and windowsthat do not fit snugly, or have torn screening, are as badas no screens at all. A screen door that doesn't closecompletely, or that opens and closes with a slam and abang, is a hazard to the nerves of the householder on apar with the buzz and bite of the mosquito and the shock-ing sight of flies hovering over the family's food.

Did you know that a sin-gle pair of flies can pro-duce 191 septillion off-spring in one summer, ifall lived? (That number,191 septillion, written outlooks like this:191,000,000,000,000,000-000,000,000-191 followedby 24 zeros.) This esti-mate was made public bythe National Pest ControlAssociation.

4. Play safe with 16-mesh-to-the-inch screens on doorsand windows to keep out all insects.

5. Hang screen doors to open outward, and equip eachwith a pneumatic-type door closer and a push-pullcatch to insure quiet closings that stay closed.

6. Keep water from accumulating in the tin cans, eavestroughs, and street gutters.

7. Empty bird baths or chicken watering pans at leastonce a week.

8. Put screening over open cisterns, and tightly covercesspools, septic tanks, and rain barrels.

9. Use larvicides on standing water in pools or ponds.

10. Stock ornamental pools with gold fish or top swim-ming minnows.

11. Use fly traps, fly papers, fly poisons, fly electro-cution devices, and fly swatters in the homes.

12. Apply manure, when used, thinly on field and lawnsto prevent flies breeding. Store manure in fly-tightboxes or pits, and treat it with borax, calcium cya-nide, or super-phosphate.
