Feast of St. Blase
St. Blase was a fourth century bishop in Armenia, renowned for his personal holiness and dedication to the physical and spiritual health of his people. He was tortured and beheaded for refusing to sacrifice to pagan idols. Legend has it that he cured a young boy choking on a fish bone. Because of this miracle of intercession St. Blase became the patron saint for the healing of throats. “Through the intercession of St. Blase, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from ail-ments of the throat and from every other evil.” His feast day is February 3rd.
In the first reading St. Paul tells the Romans that having been justified by grace, we boast of our afflictions since afflic-tion makes for endurance, endurance for virtue, and virtue for hope. Hope will not disappoint because we have the love of God poured out upon us through the Holy Spirit. At the end of the gospel, before he ascends to heaven, Jesus com-mands the apostles to go out and preach the gospel to all the nations. They go forth to preach and the Lord continued to work with them and confirm the gospel message through the many signs and wonders that accompanied them.
We will celebrate individual throat blessings on Monday during the morning mass. Communal blessing of throats will be celebrated today at all the masses.

The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord
The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord commemorates when, at eight days old, Joseph and Mary brought Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem. The significance of this feast is that in bringing Jesus to the Temple and naming him as his son, Joseph becomes his legal father, making Jesus truly the Son of David and heir to the Messianic Prophecy. The Presenta-tion of the Lord is the Fourth Joyful Mystery of the Rosary, helping us to remember the great events of salvation history in the Incarnation. The prophet Malachi, announcing the coming of the messenger to prepare the way of the Lord, says that the Messiah will be like a refiner’s fire, purifying the children of Levi to restore the kingdom to the favor of the Lord. The writer of the letter to the Hebrews says that Jesus freely accepted his own death according to our human na-ture, to free humanity from slavery to sin and death. In the Gospel the Holy Spirit sends Simeon into the Temple to take the baby Jesus in his arms, bless him and announce that he has seen the salvation of Israel. The prophetess Anna con-firms the message saying that this child is the redemption of Jerusalem.
Malachi 3:1-4 Hebrews 2:14-18 Luke 2:22-40

From the Pastor’s Desk Today we interrupt our journey through Matthew’s gospel account of Jesus’ ministry in Ordinary Time to celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. The infant Jesus is brought to the Temple according to the Law of Moses. In this act of the presentation, Joseph claims him as his son, thus fulfilling the prophecy that the Messiah will come from the House of David (since Jesus has no biological father, Jo-seph must legally adopt him). It is still a hidden manifestation, however, since Jesus is an infant. His public manifestation as the Messiah begins with his baptism in the Jordan thirty years later. The im-portance of this feast is that both Simeon and Anna proclaim in the Temple that the prophecy is fulfilled in this child who is the salvation of God’s people. Because we believe in the Resurrection, this feast is a reminder that the light of God still shines in our world, leading us to redemption and salvation.
The first reading from the prophet Malachi warns Israel that the day is coming when God will send his messenger of the covenant to call the people back to righteousness. The image of the Lord purifying the people with fire is indeed frightful, but it is a call to remember the grace that God had bestowed upon his people, bringing them out of slavery and into the promised land. When gold or silver is refined it is heated to a very high temperature until it is molten, allowing the impurities to rise to the top so they can be skimmed off, leaving only the pure metal. So, too, for us, the process of purification, the removal of our sins, can be painful (true conversion of heart is never easy); but it opens our souls to receive the grace of God.
The writer of the Letter to the Hebrews tells his listeners that because Jesus shares our human flesh and blood (our hu-man nature), it is through his death that he is able to destroy the power of death over us and free us from slavery. Be-cause Jesus has become like us in all things but sin he is able to be a merciful high priest to expiate our sins. Having been tested through what he suffered, he is able to help us in our own trials and tribulations.
In the gospel reading Mary and Joseph, having completed the time of purification prescribed by the law (forty days af-ter the birth of the child), bring Jesus to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord. As they enter the temple, Simeon comes forward and taking the child in his arms, blesses God. The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that he would not die before he had seen the Christ of the Lord. Simeon proclaims that he can now go in peace because his eyes have seen the sal-vation that God has promised in the sight of all peoples. The prophetess Anna also comes forward and gives thanks to God, proclaiming that this child will be the redemption of Jerusalem. The family returns to Nazareth where Jesus grew in wisdom and the favor of God was upon him. Both Simeon and Anna are known for their holiness so their words can be trusted. This feast reminds us that we, too, can grow in favor with God when we place our trust in his word and al-low the Holy Spirit to lead us.
The Feast of St. Blase will be celebrated tomorrow, February 3rd. St. Blase is famous for having saved a young child from choking to death and is the patron saint of diseases of the throat. There will be a communal blessing of throats at all the masses this weekend, as well as individual blessings at mass on Monday morning. There will also be a special Sports Team Blessing at the 10 a.m. mass today. Thank you to all the coaches and volunteers who give so much of their time and talent to support our student athletes.
Last Sunday the school held an Open House showcasing the work of our students and all the wonderful programs that make our school such a wonderful place for Catholic education and formation. Catholic Schools Week had a variety of fun events, including a sing-a-long, spelling bee and talent show. Thank you to all our faculty, staff, school board, parent ambassadors and volunteers who contributed their time and effort.
This coming Saturday, February 8, the Parents Association will host Casino Night. This is an important fundraiser for our school as well as a fun time. Please see page seven for details.
I want to thank everyone who donated to our second collection last weekend for the Energy Needs of the parish. I know that all of you have been affected by the extreme cold as well as the unusually heavy/frequent snow that we have received. This has strained our budget; and I appreciate all your generosity in providing for the increased snow remov-al and utility expenses.
Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

The St. Robert Bellarmine Sports Board
The SRB Sports Board is currently looking for new board members. We welcome parents, alumni, grandpar-ents, parishioners and other community members to our Board. We currently have the immediate need to replace two very hard working, passionate, and dedicated individuals. These individuals will be with us until the end of the school year; however, they would be willing to begin transitioning their duties to new Board members in preparation for the upcoming school year. While we are always looking for members with a variety of skills, our immediate need is for individuals with very specific skills and responsibilities.
The first position we are looking to fill for the upcoming school year is a Database Manager; our athlete data-base is currently managed in Excel. We are looking for a person who is proficient in Excel and has great organization-al skills and great attention to detail. This job is vital to the success of our athletic program as it affects many aspects of our organization. The second position we are actively looking to fill is for a Sports Awards Manager. This position will manage the sports awards using a database, as well as all components of our Sports Awards & Banquet with the additional help of all Board members. This position also requires a proficiency in Excel, a high level of organization and great attention to detail.
Our team hosts a variety of fundraisers and events throughout the year. We work very hard as a team to give our students the opportunity to participate in a great interscholastic sports program. Without our volunteer Sports Board, our student athletes would not have the opportunities they do. We are hoping to fill these positions as soon as possible. If you feel you have these skills and are interested in joining SRB’s Sports Board, please contact us at [email protected]. Please consider joining our team! Sincerely, The SRB Sports Board
