Lenten Almsgiving Mission Maison Fortune Orphanage in Haiti

There have been a lot of exciting changes in our mission in Haiti this past year. We have incorporated a separate foun-dation to support both science-based and business-focused curricula at the University of Notre Dame in Hinche. Both of these programs are designed to provide students with in-demand skills that can be used to begin a career or start a small business. We have established a career placement office and school scholarships for the older children who have graduated from the Orphanage. To compliment these educational programs, the foundation is establishing a small venture capital fund to support economic growth through the development of small, local businesses by provid-ing the business and entrepreneurial skills needed to succeed. Chip Wirth will be with us again this year to explain all these exciting new developments. While the Orphanage itself is largely self-sufficient with donors through the Maison Fortune Orphanage Foundation (MFO), we still refer to the mission as the orphanage as a shorthand for all of our efforts. Of course, while individual donations directly to the MFO are always welcome to continue to provide for the younger children, we have shifted our focus to job creation and development to help build the economy and provide for the future of the young people as they become adults. This is our annual Lenten Almsgiving mission. We will have a second collection next weekend. Please be generous in your support of the children.

Fourth Sunday of Lent

Today’s readings tell us of God’s blessings on his people. In the first reading, God has delivered the people from slav-ery in Egypt and led them into the promised land. After celebrating the Passover they ate the produce of the land for the first time. In the second reading, St. Paul tells the Corinthians that we are a new creation in Christ. God has given us this as a gift, reconciling us through Christ. We are to pass this gift on to others by our own ministry of reconcilia-tion. In the gospel, Luke gives us the story of the Prodigal Son. After squandering his family’s wealth, the young man, in dire straits, decides to go home. His father welcomes him with open arms, proclaiming that which was lost had been found. The father throws a big celebration in gratitude for the return of his son.

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today is Laetare Sunday, a day of rejoicing during this penitential season as a reminder that we are drawing closer to the joy of Easter. Taken from the Introit (introduction) to the Mass, the Church echoes the words of the prophet Isaiah, “Rejoice, Jerusalem! Rejoice with her, you who mourned, and you will find contentment.” Today’s readings remind us of the goodness of God and his compassion for us.

In the first reading, the Lord tells Joshua that he has removed the reproach (sin) of his people and is bringing them into the land he promised them. Their journey is over; they have come home. Today they will eat the fruit of the land. The manna ceases because the people have come into their own. God’s providence had sustained them throughout their desert journey. God has now given them new blessings, providing them a rich and abundant land. Our Lenten journey is symbolic, not only of the wandering in the desert, but our journey through life. God’s providence sustains us on our earthly journey. Christ gives us the sacraments as signs that God has removed our reproach and forgiven our sins. The Eucharist is the food that sustains us on our journey until we come to the eter-nal banquet in heaven.

Because we have received this great gift of salvation (which simply means that God has reconciled us to himself), St. Paul calls us to become the righteousness of God, reconciling through our own forgiveness of others, just as we have been forgiven. What was lost in the Garden of Eden (estrangement from God) is restored through the right-eousness of Christ. Like the Israelites in the promised land, we are strangers and aliens no longer, but are now chil-dren of God.

Being children of God is the whole point of the parable of the Prodigal Son. The younger son has been seduced by the pleasures of the world and prefers them to the company of his family. He becomes estranged from his father (God), and discovers that the goods of the world will not sustain him. So he begins his long journey home. But be-fore he can even make his apology, his father rushes out to embrace him and welcomes him home. This is the key to the whole story. God always has room for us in his house. The reunion of the family is more important than the transgressions that separated them in the first place. The older son fails to recognize this and seems unwilling to forgive.

These lessons are meant for us. Do we forgive those who have transgressed against us (as we say every time we recite the Lord’s prayer)? Do we realize that love is the Spirit of God that unites us? If the boy had not realized his mistake and begun the journey back, he never would have experienced the love and forgiveness of his father. If pride or foolishness kept him away, he would have remained estranged from his family forever. Lent is our journey back to God through our decision to bring reconciliation and forgiveness to our relationships. There is no other way.

Next weekend Chip Wirth will be here to give a presentation on the new Foundation in Haiti as a new initiative in our support of the Orphanage, as well as update us on all the wonderful things that are happening there (please see page two). There will be a second collection for the Orphanage as our Lenten Almsgiving Appeal.

The RCIA Elect will celebrate the Second Scrutiny this weekend at the Saturday 5 p.m. mass, a short ritual asking God’s blessings during the period of purification and enlightenment in preparation for receiving the Easter sacra-ments. They will celebrate the Third, and last, Scrutiny next Sunday at the 10 a.m. mass.

I want to thank Trina Eifert and Jane Hearrin and all those who volunteered with the M ulti-Parish Mission this past week. I hope that everyone who attended got a spiritual boost for their Lenten journey.

Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

Each talk will take place at 6:30 in the Church and will be followed by a light meal of soup and bread served in the Church vestibule.

How did we get here? with Anne Chrzan. Tuesday, April 2nd

This talk will look at the changes in the Catholic culture from Vatican II to the current times. Anne will explore the changes in the Catholic communities from the Second Vatican Council to the Digital Age. How can the Catholic Church adapt to the changes without losing the Mis-sion of the Catholic Church of Chicago: Make Disciples, Inspire Witness and Build Commu-nities? Anne Chrzan, is the Parish Vitality Coordinator for Vicariate 2. She has ministered with the Archdiocese of Chi-cago for over 30 years as Director of Religious Education, Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry, Pastoral Associate, Development Director, Hospital Chaplain and most recently as the Associate Director of the Institute for Diaconal Studies at USML. She holds a Masters of Divinity degree from Loyola University and a Masters in Health Sciences with a Concentration in Drug and Alcohol Abuse from Governors State University. She and her husband Jim, live in Spring Grove, IL with their two college aged adults.

Stations of the Cross Friday, April 5 at 2:20 and 7:00 PM

The Stations of the Cross are a Lenten devotion that offers witness to Jesus’ Passion and Death. At each station we use our senses and our imagination to reflect prayerfully upon Jesus’ Suffering, Death, and Resurrection, and to simply experience the visual images to reflect on Christ’s love for us.

Fr. Mike was the pastor here at St. Robert’s from 1995-2006. After retirement he move to St. Bart’s and continued to come to parish special events and to help with the celebration of Mass. In 2013 Fr. Mike moved to Our Lady of the Snows to be a retired resident priest when that parish lost its associate. Fr. Mike was a kind man who was known for his willing-ness to help anyone, accompanying them regardless of where they were on their faith journey. He was a good and gentle man who will be deeply missed. Fr. Mike, Rest in Peace.

PRAYER FOR AN END TO INFANTICIDE

The U.S. Senate recently failed to pass the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act—legislation that prohibits infanticide by ensuring that a child born alive following an attempted abortion would receive the same degree of care to preserve her or his life and health as would be given to any other child born alive at the same gestational age. Please join us in prayer for an end to in-fanticide: “Jesus, Lord of Life, transform the hearts of all elected leaders to recognize that infanticide is wrong and must not be tolerated. Open hearts and minds to recognize and defend the precious gift of every human life.”

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

With this letter I write to you about a development that should disturb us greatly, both as citizens and as disciples of Jesus, the Lord of life.

Recently, two bills have been introduced in the Illinois House and Senate. The first, House Bill

2495 and Senate Bill 1942, both identical pieces of legislation, seeks to strip unborn persons of any protection – or even consideration – under the law and declare abortion to be a “fundamental right” and matter of health care. The end result is that an abortion could be obtained at any stage of preg-nancy, including late term, for any reason and without any regulation. The law would no longer guar-antee any modicum of humanity or compassion for any unborn person in Illinois, even if they are par-tially born. This legislation also repeals the Abortion Performance Refusal Act, which protects doc-tors, nurses and hospitals who refuse to permit, recommend, perform or assist in abortion. In so do-ing, rights of conscience, especially religious objections, will be lost.

The second piece of legislation House Bill 2467 and its identical Senate Bill 1594, repeals the

Illinois Parental Notice of Abortion Act. This law, upheld unanimously by the Illinois Supreme Court

just six years ago, has the common-sense purpose of ensuring that parents would be part of the life-

altering decision of their minor child in the case she seeks an abortion. This effective law has reduced

abortions performed on minors by fifty-seven percent.

As citizens of a state and people of faith who care about the common good, I urge you to join me and my brother bishops in an effort to defeat this radical departure from current law and practice in our state. Please reach out your State Representative and Senator to urge defeat of these bills. You can find the name of your appropriate politicians and their contact information at https://www.ilcatholic.org/take-action/action-center/. To find out more about these bills, please consult the Catholic Conference of Illinois website, www.ilcatholic.org, or call the Office of Human Dignity and Solidarity at 312-534-5355 for further information.

Entrusting our efforts for all life, from the moment of conception until natural death, to the

care of our Blessed Mother, I am,
