A W'(1 The First Shall Be Least
“If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.” This is a summons to a humility to which we are unac-customed. It is one of those inversions of expectation that we hear from Jesus. The first shall be last, turn the other cheek, love your enemy, forgive 70 times 7, blessed are the poor—Jesus has given us a new way of living, and it is the way of the Gospel. There is a further dimension to the radical teachings of Jesus. They not only provide a new spiritual path forward, they give us an insight into what God is like! We had not ex-pected to hear that God is “humble,” or that He would value this virtue so highly. Yet we see that the Son was born not in the palace of a king but in a stable in an insignificant town in Israel. The creator of the universe, who has infinite and eternal power beyond our comprehension, reveals what He is like, and He wants us to become like Him. He who was laid in a manger becomes our model of humility. “Learn of me for I am meek and humble of heart.” A great war wages around us, much of which is unseen. Even amidst relative peace, conflicts are brewing. Arrogance, pride, and competition to be first or to be the most pow-erful all too easily come to dominate. The clash between the Evil One and the Gospel will continue until the end of time—in the world and within our hearts. Yet in the midst of these conflicts, Jesus emphasizes the im-portance of the child. “Holding a child in the midst of the Twelve, Jesus said to them, ‘Whoever re-ceives one child such as this in my name, receives me.’” The words of Jesus are a call to be merciful and compassionate toward others, especially the forgotten or marginal-ized. It’s an instruction on how to treat others. But there is something more: Jesus wants us to embrace a spirit of childlikeness. He is calling us to be quiet and receptive, simple in lifestyle, utterly trusting in God’s care for us, and constantly encouraging one another. The antidote to hubris is to become more childlike. It rejects insincerity, condescen-sion, and the need to always have my own way. It turns away from needless opinions, vainglory, and the need for attention or hon-ors. The true calling of humility is always pointing to the Glory of God. It was never about me anyway but about God’s extrava-gant love and beauty. It is not about what I might do for Him, but about what God has done through me, and often in spite of me.

In honor of St. Francis of Assisi
All Pets Welcome! St. Robert’s North Parking LotSunday, October 3rd, 3:00 p.m.
This is a great week to be reminded that the call to be a Christian is not a simple path. We are called to serve boldly and without worrying about material needs. This week's readings have a clear call for us to examine how we share God's love for us with others.
How do we do such serious reflection when it seems we don't have time for it? We can be “contemplatives in action” by beginning our day with a desire, letting that desire come to our consciousness throughout the day in the “background” moments, and by giving thanks for what grac-es we received at the end of the day.
How do we come up with the desire? The first step to finding “intimacy with God in the midst of our daily lives” is to devel-op the habit of naming a desire for the day, while we are still just getting started with the day, before our concentration becomes pre-occupied with the worries of the day. These guides can help by suggesting desires that flow from the readings of the week, but the best desires are in the very needs and anxieties that are deep in our hearts. That is where God is working in us, revealing things we can turn over to the Lord and form into a prayer. It can often be just 45 seconds, when we throw on a robe or slippers, or while in the shower or getting dressed. It is deep prayer if we can just say, “Help me, today, Lord. My day is so full. Give me courage, and let me know you are with me all day.”
We can use the readings of the week in a variety of ways. We can take a day to imagine being part of Jesus' family, with a desire to hear his word and keep it. We can let Jesus address us one day this week, asking us who we say he is. The words don't need to be complicated - it's just starting conversation with God who loves you deeply, then listening.
Gracious God, I ask you to heal me today as you healed so many others. Bless my eyes that I might appreciate all that I see around me; and my mouth that I may not judge others and speak harshly of them. And bless my feet as you send me on this journey of grace in my life each day.

DAILY PRAYER THIS WEEK SAINT OF THE DAYSt. Pius of Pietrelcina,
Priest
A poor brother who praysBorn into a poor Italian farm family, from a young age Francesco Forgione desired to be a friar. When he was sixteen, he entered the novitiate of the Capuchin Order, and took the name Brother Pius (Fra Pio). He was ordained to the priesthood in 1910; six years later, joined the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in San Giovanni Rotondo. He spent many hours every day hearing Confessions. The height of his apostolic commitment was the celebration of the Holy Mass. He described himself as “a poor brother who prays.” “Prayer is the greatest weapon we have,” he said. It is “a key to open the heart of God.”
An extraordinary meetingIn 1948, Padre Pio heard the Confession of a young Polish priest, Father Karol Wojtyła, who thirty years later would as-cend the throne of Peter, taking the name John Paul II. It was during John Paul’s pontificate that Padre Pio was de-clared blessed. During the rite of beatification, the Pope said that in the humble friar, we see the image of Christ suffering and risen. “His body,” he said, “marked by the ‘stigmata,’ showed the intimate connection between death and resur-rection… Not less sorrowful, and humanly much more scorching, were the trials he had to suffer as a conse-quence, one could say, of his singular charisms.” For Padre Pio, “suffering with Christ” was a gift: “In contemplating the Cross on Jesus’ shoulders,” he said, “I always feel strength-ened and I exult with holy joy… All that Jesus suffered in His Passion, I too have suffered, insofar as it is possible for a human creature.”
“Relief from suffering”The life of Padre Pio also shows an intense commitment to alleviate the sufferings of families. In 1956 he inaugurated the “Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza” (the House of Relief from Suffering), a new state of the art hospita. “It is the apple of my eye,” the friar said when the hospital opened. “This is the creation that Providence, with your help, has created. Gaze at it in wonder, and with me bless the Lord God. He has place upon the earth a seed that He will warm with the His rays of love.”
DeathPadre Pio died during the night of 23 September 1968, at the age of 81. On 16 June 2002, he was proclaimed a saint by Pope John Paul II. In his homily, the Pope said, “The life and mission of Padre Pio prove that difficulties and sorrows, if accepted out of love, are transformed into a privileged way of holiness, which opens onto the horizons of a greater good, known only to the Lord."

In today’s Gospel Jesus called the Twelve, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all land the servant of all.” Taking a child, he placed it in their midst, and putting his arms around it, he said to them, “Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, re-ceives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me.” Your gift to the Society of St. Vin-cent de Paul will help hungry chil-dren feel the arms of Jesus around

PRO LIFE
40 Days for Life Fall 2021 Campaign runs September 22 through October 30th. Please join SRB parishioners on Sep-tember 30th and October 27th to pray for the unborn. The visible, public centerpiece of 40 Days for Life is a fo-cused, 40-day, non-stop, round-the-clock prayer vigil outside a single Planned Parenthood center or other abortion facility in your community. It is a peaceful and educational pres-ence. Those who are called to stand witness during this 24-hour-a-day presence send a powerful message to the com-munity about the tragic reality of abortion. It also serves as a call to repentance for those who work at the abortion center and those who patronize the facility. September 25th, 2021 Annual Archbishop's Vigil for Life Help build the culture of life through prayer! Join Archbishop George Lucas for the Vigil for Life. Following Mass, there will be Exposition of the Holy Eucharist and a rosary proces-sion to the Bellevue abortion facility. This is one of the most powerful pro-life events in the area. Please join us! For more information, contact St. Mary’s Church at 402-291-1350, or email [email protected]
