“Why are you doing this?” This is a question that could be asked of anyone who gives time, talent or treasure to the Church. An answer is found in the Gospel of Mark, “The Master has need of it and will send it back here at once.” The people in Jesus’ day will-

Today’s Gospel Reflection: John 4:5-42 THIRST
Each time today’s Gospel story is read, I can’t help but think of the many televi-sion commercials I’ve seen depicting perspiring athletes lifting a beverage to their lips while the scorching sun beats down on them. Our culture has definite ideas about how to quench thirst. Today, those ideas are turned upside down. The Samaritan woman operates, initially, on the TV commercial level. She asks Jesus for the flowing water so that she will not have to keep coming to the well. Jesus then talks about what real thirst is, and
how he, and he alone, can quench that thirst. Lent calls us to find those places deep within ourselves where we thirst. In our thirst, as did the Israelites, we cry out to God asking for springs of living water. Deep down we know that only the Lord can satisfy these thirsts. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

PRAYER Daily Mass, Daily Rosary, Holy Hour Weekly, Family Prayer each night, Friday Stations of the Cross.
FASTING During Lent, those of age 18 until the beginning of their 60th year are obligated to observe a day of fasting on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Denying or limiting oneself of food reminds us of our dependence on God and God’s infinite care for us. Thus it also compels us to remember and to help those who fast not by choice or religious obligation but by lack of food and resources. Fasting means eating only one full meat-less meal per day. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to main-tain strength, may be taken, but together they should not equal a full meal. Liquids, including milk and fruit juice, may be taken between meals. If health or ability to work is affected, one is not obligated to fast. On other weekdays of Lent, eating more mod-est meals is also strongly recommended.
ABSTINENCE Abstinence from meat is observed on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent. All the faithful are bound by Church law to abstain from meat on these days from the day after their 14th birthday. Pastors and parents should ensure that children who are not bound by the laws of fast and abstinence are cate-chized in an authentic sense of penance, conversion, and recon-ciliation.
CONFESSION Frequent Confession is generally said to be once a month and this would be a good practice to have all year long. Resolve to make a good examination of conscience.
PENANCE Our Lord told us that penance is necessary for salvation. Works of penance are a way of mortifying ourselves and growing in sanctity.
GOOD WORKS Visit the sick, visit people in nursing homes, support pro-life efforts, take someone to Mass with you on Sundays, get in-volved in social justice programs.
ALMSGIVING Increase your donations to the Church, give to cloistered monas-teries or convents, support the missions, support crisis pregnan-cy centers, support Christian Service Programs, help the poor.
SPIRITUAL READING Read the Bible at least 15 minutes daily. Read a good Catholic book. Read from the lives of Saints.
ENTERTAINMENT We can drastically limit our TV viewing, give up favorite pro-grams or give up television altogether. Perhaps instead we can watch a good program as a family or a religious video. Rather than going to secular movies, rent a religious film to watch as a family.

Sunday, March 15, 2020 Dear parishioners and friends, Our country, just like the many parts of the world, most seriously in Asian countries, are struggling with the coronavirus epidemic. This virus can easily spread from one person to another in close proximity. Droplets of bodily fluids - such as saliva or mucus - from an infected person are dispersed in the air or on surfaces by coughing or sneezing. These droplets can come into direct contact with other people or can infect those who pick them up by touching infected surfaces and then their face. According to scientists, coughs and sneezes can
travel several feet and stay suspended in the air for up to 10 minutes. There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. In addition, we turn to Jesus, the Divine Physician, for hope and healing. In his recent decree, our Bishop Oscar Cantú called all the faithful in the Diocese of San Jose to “pray for the repose of the souls of those who have died from this illness, for the healing of those who are ill, and for the protection of all our health care workers. We hope and pray that our medical professionals will be able to find a cure to this illness.” This challenging moment reminds us that we need Jesus. In our lives, despite in good time and in bad, we need Jesus. Without Him, our good times can be a lost time, and our bad times can be also a lost time. The Turkish people have a story about a young rich man who had a life of dissipation, with several social vices, especially gambling addiction. His parents had tried without success to convince him to amend his life. One day, a neighbor advised them to let the son live with 10 other young good men. Their examples will inspire the son to make a change for his own. The father was pleased with the idea. He went on and sought 10 young good men and asked them to help with the plan. He promised them good incentives in return. So, 10 young men and the son moved into a large home. After three months, the father came and checked out the place with high hope that his son would be-come a different person. When he opened the door, guess what did he see? His son and the other 10 men were gambling together. They were influenced by the bad behavior of the son. This example reminds us that the only safe choice is to choose and follow Jesus. This does not only help us to avoid choosing the wrong path, but also help us with prudence to do what is right and good. As President Abraham Lincoln said, “I couldn’t perform the duties of this [presidential] job for 15 minutes if I didn’t feel that I could ask for help from someone who was wis-er and stronger than all others.” Back to the current epidemic and anxieties that it causes, this is what we should do: we rely on the love of Christ and we will be OK. It does not mean that we won’t face trials in modern time. It means that He is always with us and that’s why we are OK. May the Holy Spirit guide us in peace into Christ’s comforting love! Fr. SAINT JOSEPH, HUSBAND OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY Joseph, someone once joked, was indeed the perfect husband: the only major character in Je-sus’ story who never utters a word! But the Gospel recounts and the liturgy celebrates his silent witness of faith-filled deeds: “With a husband’s love he cherished Mary, the Virgin Mother of God; with fatherly care he watched over Jesus” (Preface of Saint Joseph, Sacramentary). Cath-olic devotion, therefore, hails him as patron-protector of the universal Church. Some cultures set a festive “Saint Joseph’s Table,” welcoming the poor and strangers to feast with family and friends. Tradition keeps today as the anniversary of his death, which we presume was peaceful, with Jesus and Mary present. Thus, Catholics invoke Joseph as Patron of a Happy
Death. Descended from David’s house, which God finished “building” through Joseph’s provision of a home for Mary and Jesus, he was, fittingly, a carpenter by trade; thus, patron of workers. Spring, nature’s rebirth, begins between his feast and Annunciation (March 25), appropriately, since Joseph’s silent obedience and Mary’s “Let it be done to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38) usher in humanity’s spiritual rebirth. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. HEALTH CORNER To add strength to leg muscles and get a cardiovascular workout at the same time, try climbing plain old stairs. This can be done at home, in your office, apartment building, or on stair-climbing machines in the gym. Climbing two steps at a time is good for building the quadriceps (thigh muscles) and the gluteus (butt). Going down steps builds strength in the quadriceps and to a lesser extent, the hamstrings.

Cada vez que se lee el relato del Evan-gelio de hoy, no puedo dejar de pensar en los muchos comerciales televisivos que muestran atletas sudorosos llevan-do una bebida a los labios mientras que el sol calcinante los golpea. Nuestra cultura tiene ideas definidas sobre có-mo apagar la sed. Hoy, esas ideas son puestas cabeza abajo. Al inicio, la sa-maritana opera al nivel del comercial de televisión. Le pide agua viva a Jesús para no tener que seguir viniendo al pozo. Es entonces que Jesús le habla sobre la verdadera sed y cómo él, solo él, puede calmar esa sed. La Cuaresma
nos llama a encontrar esos lugares muy dentro de nosotros don-de estamos sedientos. En nuestra sed, al igual que los israelitas, clamamos a Dios pidiéndole fuentes de agua viva. Allá en el fondo sabemos que solo el Señor puede satisfacer esa sed. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

SACRIFICIOS Nuestro Señor nos dijo que la penitencia es necesaria para la salvación. Las obras de penitencia son una forma de mortificar-nos y crecer en santidad.
OBRAS BUENAS Visite a los enfermos, visite a personas en hogares de ancianos, apoye los esfuerzos pro-vida, lleve a alguien a Misa los domin-gos, participe en programas de justicia social.
LECTURA ESPIRITUAL Lea la Biblia al menos 15 minutos diarios. Lea un buen libro católico. Lea de la vida de los santos.
ENTRETENIMIENTO Podemos limitar drásticamente nuestra visualización de TV, renunciar a los programas favoritos o abandonar la televisión por completo. Quizás, en cambio, podamos ver un buen pro-grama en familia o en un video religioso. En lugar de ir al cine secular, alquile una película religiosa para verla en familia.

MENSAJE DE NUESTRO PARROCO Domingo 15 de marzo de 2020 Estimados feligreses y amigos: Nuestro país, al igual que muchas partes del mundo, más gravemente en los países asiáticos, está luchando con la epidemia de coronavirus. Este virus puede propagarse fácilmente de una persona a otra si encuentran muy cerca. En general, el coronavirus se puede contagiar por me-dio de las gotas de líquido que se esparcen en el aire cuando una persona tose o estornuda. Es-tas gotas pueden entrar en contacto directo con otras personas o pueden infectar a quienes las recogen al tocar las superficies infectadas y luego se tocan la cara. Según los científicos, las gotas de la tos y los estornudos pueden viajar varios pies y permanecer suspendidos en el aire por hasta 10 minutos. Actualmente no existe una vacuna para prevenir la enfermedad por coro-
navirus 2019 (COVID-19). La mejor manera de prevenir la enfermedad es evitar exponerse a este virus. Además, debe-mos recurrir a Jesús, el Médico Divino, en busca de esperanza y curación. En su reciente decreto, nuestro Obispo Oscar Cantú instó a todos los fieles de la Diócesis de San José a “orar por el eterno descanso de los fieles que han fallecido por esta enfermedad, por la curación de los enfermos y por la protección de todos nuestros trabajadores de la salud. Espera-mos y rezamos para que los profesionales médicos puedan encontrar una cura para esta enfermedad”. Este tiempo desa-fiante nos recuerda que necesitamos a Jesús. En nuestras vidas, ya sea en las cosas buenas o malas, necesitamos a Jesús. Sin Él, nuestros buenos tiempos pueden ser un tiempo perdido y nuestros malos tiempos también pueden ser un tiempo perdido. El pueblo turco tiene una historia sobre un joven rico que tuvo una vida de disipación, con varios vicios sociales, especialmente la adicción al juego. Sus padres habían intentado sin éxito convencerlo de enmendar su vida. Un día, un vecino les aconsejó que dejaran al hijo vivir con otros 10 jóvenes buenos. Sus ejemplos inspirarán al hijo a hacer un cambio por sí mismo. Al padre del joven le pareció una muy buena idea. Buscó a 10 jóvenes buenos y les pidió ayuda con el plan prometiéndoles buenos incentivos a cambio. Entonces, los 10 jóvenes y el hijo se mudaron a una casa grande. Después de tres meses, el padre fue a visitar-los con una gran esperanza de que su hijo se hubiera convertido en una persona diferente. Cuando abrió la puerta, ¿adivinan qué vio? Encontró a su hijo y los otros 10 jóvenes jugando juegos de azar. Los otros jóvenes fueron influen-ciados por el mal comportamiento del hijo. Este ejemplo nos recuerda que la única opción segura es elegir y seguir a Jesús. Esto no solo nos ayuda a evitar el camino equivocado, sino que tam-bién nos ayuda con prudencia a hacer lo que es correcto. Como dijo el Presi-dente Abraham Lincoln: “No podría realizar las tareas de este trabajo (presidencial) durante 15 minutos si no sintiera que podría pedir ayuda a alguien que fuera más sabio y más fuerte que todos los demás”. Volviendo a la epidemia actual y las ansiedades que causa, esto es lo que debemos hacer: confiar en el amor de Cristo y estaremos bien. No significa que no enfrentaremos pruebas en los tiempos modernos, significa que Él siempre está con nosotros y por eso estaremos bien. ¡Que el Espíritu Santo nos guíe a la paz y al amor reconfortante de Cristo! Kính thưa Quý Cụ, Quý Ông Bà và Anh Chị Em:
Nước Mỹ, cũng như nhiều quốc gia trên thế giới, nhất là ở bên Châu Á, đang phải đương đầu với nạn dịch coronavirus. Vi khuẩn này dễ lây lan từ người này qua người khác trong phạm vi gần. Những chất nhầy và nước bọt từ người bị nhiễm có thể phát tán trong không khí hay dính vào nơi này nơi nọ khi người đó ho hoặc hắc hơi. Người ở trong cự ly gần sẽ dễ dàng vị nhiễm vi khuẩn trực tiếp, còn không thì
họ cũng vẫn bị nhiễm khi đụng tay vào những vật dụng mà vi khuẩn dính vào, rồi sau đó đưa tay đụng vào mặt mình. Các nhà khoa học cho biết hắt hơi và ho có thể phát tán vi khuẩn ra xa đến gần hai mét và ở trong không khí đến 10 phút. Hiện tại thì ngành y học chưa tìm ra được thuốc để ngừa bệnh dịch COVID-19 mới này. Cách tốt nhất để ngừa bị nhiễm bệnh là hãy tránh tiếp xúc với những vùng có người đã bị nhiễm vi khuẩn. Ngoài ra, chúng ta hãy chạy đến Chúa Giêsu, vị Lương Y Nhân Lành, để cậy trông và được chữa lành. Trong thư mới ban hành gần đây cho toàn giáo phận, Đức cha Oscar Cantú đã kêu gọi các tín hữu trong giáo phận San Jose hãy “cầu nguyện cho linh hồn những người đã qua đời vì bệnh dịch, cầu cho những người đang bị nhiễm bệnh dịch được chữa lành, và cầu cho các nhân viên y tế được bảo vệ an toàn. Chúng ta cũng hy vọng và cầu nguyện cho giới y khoa sớm tìm ra phương thuốc chữa bệnh dịch này.” Thời điểm đầy thách đố này nhắc nhở mỗi người rằng chúng ta cần Chúa Giêsu.
Trong cuộc sống, dù trong hoàn cảnh nào hay môi trường nào, chúng ta đều cần Chúa Giêsu. Không có Chúa thì trong lúc yên hàn hay làm người tốt vẫn có thể bị lạc lối, và trong lúc gian nan hay đang ở trong bóng tối càng có thể bị lạc lối. Người Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ có kể câu chuyện về một cậu trai trẻ sống trong một gia đình giàu có nhưng lại dính vào nhiều tệ nạn xã hội, nhất là nghiện cờ bạc. Cha mẹ đã làm đủ mọi cách để giáo dục anh ta, nhưng không thành. Ngày kia, có một người đến khuyên ông bố rằng: “Hãy tụ tập 10 người trẻ tốt lại và để cho họ sống chung với con trai anh. Gương sáng của họ rồi sẽ gây ảnh hưởng mạnh đến nó, và chẳng bao lâu nó sẽ từ bỏ tật xấu để trở thành người mẫu mực.” Người Cha hài lòng với lời khuyên này. Ông đi mời 10 người trẻ tốt lành và hứa sẽ trọng thưởng cho họ, nếu họ cộng tác giúp con ông. Thế là 10 người đó dọn vào sống chung với con ông trong một ngôi nhà tách biệt. Sau ba tháng, người bố đến thăm. Khi ông mở cửa ra thì thấy cậu con trai ông ngồi chơi bài, chung quanh cậu ta là 10 cậu con trai nhà lành cũng đang mê đánh bài không kém gì cậu ta! Rốt cuộc họ đã không làm ảnh hưởng gì trên chàng trai nọ; mà ngược lại, chính họ đã tiêm nhiễm tật xấu của anh ta! Câu chuyện này nhắc cho chúng ta rằng sự lựa chọn an toàn nhất chính là chọn Chúa và theo Chúa. Làm được như vậy thì không những giúp chúng ta tránh đi lạc lối, mà còn giúp chúng ta sáng suốt đi làm những việc đúng và tốt. Như Tổng thống Mỹ Abraham Lincoln có nói, “Tôi đã không thể làm nổi những nhiệm vụ trong cương vị tổng thống dù là 15 phút, nếu như tôi không cảm nhận rằng mình có thể nương tựa vào một Đấng khôn ngoan hơn và mạnh hơn tất cả những người khác.”
Trở lại nạn dịch hiện tại và những lo lắng mà nạn dịch gây ra cho mọi người, thiết nghĩ đây là việc những tín hữu Công Giáo nên làm: đó là hãy trông cậy vào tình yêu của Đức Kitô, để rồi mọi sự sẽ ổn. Điều đó không có nghĩ là chúng ta sẽ không phải đối diện với những thử thách của thời đại. Nhưng có nghĩa là Chúa luôn đồng hành với chúng ta và đó là lý do tại sao chúng ta sẽ không sao. Bài Ðọc 1: Xh 17, 3-7. Chúa sai ông Môisen dẫn dân Do thái đi qua sa mạc về đất Chúa hứa. Dọc đường thiếu nước uống, họ kêu trách Chúa. Chúa cho ông lấy gậy đập vào đá: Nước chảy ra cho họ uống. Ðó là hình ảnh Chúa là nước hằng sống.
Bài Ðọc 2: Rm 5, 1-2.5-8. Thánh Phaolô khẳng định Chúa thương chúng ta, cho Con Một Người chịu chết chuộc tội chúng ta, ban cho chúng ta nước hằng sống là ân sủng Chúa Thánh Thần.
Bài Tin Mừng: Ga 4, 5-42. Chúa Giêsu xin người nữ Samar i cho nước uống, để Người ban lại cho chị nước hằng sống là chính Người. Ai tin Người sẽ được sống muôn đời.

Thánh Cả Giuse cũng thế. Thánh Cả tuyệt đối tin vào lời Chúa. Nên ngài tin cả những điều khó tin nhất. Làm sao người trinh nữ có thể sinh con? Làm sao con bác thợ mộc có thể lên ngôi thừa kế ngai vàng vua David? Nhưng ngài vững tin vào lời Chúa, nên mau mắn thi hành lệnh Chúa truyền. Tin cả lời Chúa dạy trong giấc ngủ. Vì thế ngài có lòng phó thác vô biên.
Pho tượng diễn tả niềm phó thác. Người lữ hành sao có thể ngủ ngon như thế? Người ra đi trong buồn khổ vì bạn mình có thai mà chẳng biết xuất xứ. Người ra đi trong lo âu vì bạo vương Herode đang tìm Hài nhi để tiêu diệt, sao có thể ngủ đến mê say như thế? Đó là vì ngài có lòng phó thác vô biên. Phó thác cũng nói lên tâm tình dâng hiến. Mọi sự là của Chúa. Mọi việc không ngoài thánh ý Chúa. Tất cả nằm trong bàn tay Chúa Quan Phòng. Ngài chẳng làm gì khác hơn là để Chúa làm việc. Ngài phó thác mọi việc trong tay Chúa. Ngài sống đúng lời Thánh Vịnh 4,9: “Thư thái bình an vừa nằm con đã ngủ. Vì chỉ mình Ngài cho con sống yên hàn”. Vì thế ngài vẫn ngủ ngon giữa muôn vàn lo âu buồn khổ. Đó là vì ngài thấy ánh sáng giữa đêm tối.
Pho tượng cũng diễn tả đêm tối. Đêm tối nên phải ngủ. Nhưng chính khi ngủ ngài được Chúa hướng dẫn. Ngài thấy ánh sáng trong đêm tối. Sigmund Freud khi thiết lập khoa Phân tâm học đã tìm ra bóng tối trong con người. Theo ông phần ánh sáng ý thức trong con người rất bé nhỏ. Trong khi phần bóng tối tiềm thức và vô thức mênh mông và dày đặc. Chính bóng tối quyết định số phận con người. Tiềm thức và vô thức bị phần ý thức dồn ép, vùi lấp. Chỉ hiện lên trong những giấc mơ. Nói nôm na là ngày nghĩ gì đêm mơ thấy điều ấy.
Nếu giấc mơ nói lên chiều sâu của tâm hồn, thì trong sâu thẳm tâm hồn của thánh Giuse có Chúa luôn ngự trị. Thánh Giuse luôn nghĩ về Chúa. Luôn tìm thánh ý Chúa. Nên Chúa đã soi sáng cho ngài trong giấc mơ. Ngài đi giữa đêm tối trần gian, nhưng được ánh sáng của Chúa soi dẫn. Ngài đi giữa đêm tối giác quan nhưng được ánh sáng Thánh Thần chỉ lối. Ngài đi giữa đêm tối mầu nhiệm, nhưng lại được ánh sáng Lời Chúa dẫn đường. Chỉ đi theo Lời Chúa. Như Thánh Vinh 119, 105: “Lời Chúa là ngọn đèn soi cho con bước. Là ánh sáng chỉ đường con đi”.
Lạy Thánh Cả Giuse xưa thánh cả đã đi trong đêm đen. Nhưng đã tìm được ánh sáng Lời Chúa, đã có ngọn đèn đức tin soi đường. Ngài vẫn ngủ ngon vì luôn phó thác vào bàn tay Chúa Quan Phòng. Xin thương nâng đỡ chở che chúng con. Để dù đêm tối dày đặc và phong ba bão táp dập vùi, chúng con luôn hướng về quê trời. Và đi đến nơi bình an. Amen.

Trong thời điểm nạn dịch corona đang khiến mọi người lo lắng, và cũng nhân dịp lễ kính Thánh cả Giuse—Bạn Trăm Năm Đức Trinh Nữ Maria—xin giới thiệu với cộng đoàn bài chia sẻ của Đức Tổng Giám Mục Giuse Ngô Quang Kiệt (Nguyên Tổng Giám Mục Hà Nội). Rất thích hợp cho hoàn cảnh hiện tại. Năm nay tôi được tặng hai tượng thánh Giuse nằm ngủ. Tượng có xuất xứ từ Philippines. Nghe nói Đức Thánh Cha Phanxico cũng có một tượng để trên bàn làm việc của ngài. Thực ra tượng thánh Giuse nằm ngủ có nền tảng Kinh Thánh. Hầu hết những lần Chúa phán bảo ngài đều thông qua giấc ngủ. Như bài Tin Mừng hôm nay kể lại: “Ông đang toan tính như vậy, thì sứ thần Chúa hiện đến báo mộng cho ông”.
Pho tượng diễn tả đức tin. Thư Rôma so sánh đức tin của thánh Giuse với đức tin của tổ phụ Abraham. Abraham tuyệt đối tin vào lời Chúa hứa. Chúa hứa cho ngài một miền đất chảy sữa và mật. Nhưng đến cuối đời ngài chẳng có mảnh đất nào. Sách Sáng thế chương 23 thuật lại: Khi bà Sarah qua đời, ngài phải thương thuyết với Hebron con ông Khết mua thửa đất Macpela để chôn cất vợ mình. Chúa hứa cho ngài một dòng dõi đông như sao trên trời như cát dưới biển. Nhưng khi đã ngoài chín mươi tuổi ngài vẫn chưa có con. Và khi Isaac được mười hai tuổi, Chúa lại truyền phải sát tế dâng cho Chúa. Thế mà ngài vẫn vâng lời. Thư Roma kết luận: “Mặc dù không có gì để trông cậy, ông vẫn trông cậy và vững tin”.
