20TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - August 20, 2017 Today’s Gospel Reflection: Matthew 15:21-28

CALLED TO ACT IN GOD’S NAME “Let all the nations praise you!” (Psalm 67:4) today’s psalm response exclaims. In the psalms and other Hebrew scriptures, this kind of invocation is actually an invitation to God to act, to intervene in human lives in a man-ner that will cause everyone—not just the Chosen People—to give praise. Stated a bit more strongly, it is something of a “put up or shut up” challenge to God, the sort of strong statement the psalmists of Israel, trusting in their intimate and loving relationship with God, were not afraid to make. The Gospel has its own exclamation, announcing the appearance of the Canaanite woman with “Behold!” (Matthew 15:22) “Behold!” is a scriptural flag that tells us that God is about to act or announce something

through an individual or a situation. In the case of Jesus, God was going to act through this woman, whom nobody among Jesus’ followers would have believed to be an agent of the divine will. Like the psalmists, we might passively inform or perhaps even actively challenge God to do some-thing so that everyone will come to belief, but God will always turn the tables on us. It becomes our calling, our duty (as it was for Jesus) to behold the situations and persons of our daily lives so that God can act through us, so the Kingdom can be announced through our living. August 22 is the Feast of The Queenship of the Blessed

Virgin Mary On the 11th of October 1954, Pope Pius XII established the Feast of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary to be celebrated throughout the world, and commanded that on that day each year, the world should renew its consecration to her. “The purpose of the Feast is that all may recognize more

clearly and venerate more devoutly the merciful and motherly sovereignty of her who bore God in her womb". (Ven. Pius XII, Ad. Coeli Reginam).

This Feast honors the fact that God has restored the Davidic Kingdom, with Jesus as the Christ (Anointed One) -- and Je-sus's Mother -- Our Mother -- as its Queen Mother. The King of Kings requires a Queen, and in Israel, it is the King's Mother who sits on the throne and exerts power as “The Great Lady” (“gebirah” or “gevirah,” as this position is known in Hebrew). Just as Bethsabee (Bathsheba), the mother of King Solomon, acted as intercessor for the people of Israel, Our Lady acts as intercessor for us with the King of Kings.

QUEENSHIP OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

The Liturgy of Emmanuel The assembly has gathered from near and far, on foot, by bus, by car, by subway, singly and by twos and threes: single people, couples, families. Now that movement is ritualized and made visible in the liturgy’s entrance procession. We are not alone on this jour-ney; Christ is with us. The procession is led by the cross, with the image of Christ upon it. Candles, signs of a living pres-

ence, are carried around the cross. Candles also accompany the Book of the Gospels, another sign of Emmanuel, God-with-us. The priest presider is likewise a sign of Christ’s presence in our assembly; he will act in persona Christi, in the person of Christ, who presides at every Eucharist. As the procession begins, we stand and sing together in our first act as a community. The joining of our voices begins to turn many into one. The songs we sing range from ancient chants to contemporary hymns, but they have the same purpose, to foster our unity and turn our thoughts to the mysteries we gather to celebrate. We may feel that we can’t sing well, but “Christ al-ways invites us to enter into song, to rise above our own preoc-cupations, and to give our entire selves to the hymn of his Pas-chal Sacrifice” (USCCB, Sing to the Lord, 14).

Reflexión al Evangelio de hoy: Mateo 15,21-28 LLAMADOS A ACTUAR EN EL NOMBRE DE DIOS

“¡Que todos los pueblos te alaben!” (Salmo 67:4) exclama la respuesta del salmo de hoy. En el salterio y en otras escrituras hebreas, este tipo de invocación es en realidad una invitación a Dios para que actúe e intervenga en las vidas humanas de tal manera que haga que todos –no sólo el Pueblo Elegido –exprese alabanzas. Dicho algo más fuerte, es como desafiar a Dios para que “aguante o se calle”, el tipo de palabras duras que los salmistas de Israel, confiando en su íntima relación de amor con Dios, no temían expresar. El Evangelio tiene su propia exclamación que anuncia la aparición de la mujer cananea con un

“Entonces” (Mateo 15:22). “Entonces” o “he aquí” es una señal en la Biblia que nos indica que observemos con mucha atención, que Dios está por actuar o anunciar algo por medio de un individuo o una situación. En el caso de Jesús, Dios iba a obrar a través de esta mujer, a quien ninguno de los seguidores de Jesús hubiera creído pudiera ser una agente de la voluntad divina. Como los salmistas, puede que informemos en forma pasiva a Dios o quizás hasta activamente le desafiemos para que haga algo para que todos lleguen a creer, mas Dios siempre nos volteará las posicio-nes. Se convierte en nuestro llamado, nuestro deber (como lo fue para Jesús) observar atentamente las situaciones y a las personas en nuestra vida diaria para que Dios pueda actuar a través de nosotros, para que el Reino sea anunciado en nuestro diario vivir. M ientras que la población de estudiantes que no son hispanos va bajando en Estados Unidos de América, el número de estudiantes

hispanos va creciendo en las escuelas primarias y secundarias. Esta es buena noticia para los latinos. La mala noticia es que el porcentaje de estudiantes latinos que abandonan la escuela y nunca terminan su edu-cación sigue creciendo. De la misma manera, el número de latinos que van a la universidad continúa muy bajo y muchos de los que asisten nunca terminan por falta de recursos, documentos legales o apoyo fami-liar. La familia constituye uno de nuestros valores centrales como hispanos. Esta no debe ser una barrera sino un apoyo para que se edu-quen nuestros hijos e hijas. Recuerdo bien que a la edad de 6 años mi papá me hacía pasar y repasar el abecedario. Durante la primaria, él y mi mamá me corregían la tarea, y cuando no quería ir a la escuela, me hacían ver lo difícil que es la vida cuando no se tiene estudios. El 22 de agosto celebramos a la Santísima Virgen María como Reina del

Universo La fiesta de hoy fue instituida por el Papa Pío XII, en 1955 para venerar a María como Rein-a igual que se hace con su Hijo, Cristo Rey, al final del año litúrgico. A Ella le corresponde no sólo por naturaleza sino por mérito el título de Reina Madre.

La Iglesia la proclama Señora y Reina de los ángeles y de los santos, de los patriarcas y de los profetas, de los apóstoles y de los mártires, de los confesores y de las vírgenes. Es Reina del Cielo y de la Tierra, gloriosa y digna Reina del Universo, a quien podemos invocar día y noche, no sólo con el dulce nombre de Madre, sino también con el de Reina, como la saludan en el cielo con alegría y amor los ángeles y todos los santos.

Cómo coronar a la Nuestra Señora, la Virgen María en su hogar y consagrar su familia a Ella:

Prepare un altar con una estatua o imagen de Nuestra Señora, la Virgen María. Decore con flores y velas para darle a Ella un lugar de honor en su hogar donde todos la miren y recen frecuentemente ante Ella.

La Liturgia de Emmanuel La asamblea se ha reunido. Venimos de cerca y de lejos, a pie, en autobús, en auto. Hay personas solteras, parejas, familias. Ahora se comienza el ritual y se hace visible en la pro-cesión de la entrada de la liturgia. No estamos solos en este viaje; Cristo está con nosotros. La procesión es conducida por la cruz, con la imagen de Cristo sobre ella.

Las velas, signos de una presencia viva, se llevan alrededor de la cruz. Las velas también acompañan el Libro de los Evange-lios, otra señal de Emmanuel, “Dios con nosotros”. El sacerdote es también un signo de la presencia de Cristo en nuestra asam-blea. El actuará “in persona Christi”, en la persona de Cristo, quien preside cada Eucaristía. Cuando la procesión comienza, nos levantamos y ento-namos cánticos en nuestro primer acto como comunidad. La unión de nuestras voces comienza a convertir a muchos en uno. Los cánticos que cantamos van desde cantos antiguos hasta himnos contemporáneos, pero tienen el mismo propósito, fo-mentar nuestra unidad y tornar nuestros pensamientos en los misterios a los que nos reunimos para celebrar. A lo mejor sentimos que no podemos cantar bien, pero “Cristo siempre nos invita a entrar en el canto, a elevarnos por encima de nuestras propias preocupaciones y a entregarnos to-talmente al himno de su Sacrificio Pascual”. Lời Chúa : “Bà ấy đến bái lạy mà thưa Người rằng: "Lạy Ngài, xin cứu giúp tôi!" Người đáp: "Không nên lấy bánh dành cho con cái mà ném cho lũ chó con." Bà ấy nói: "Thưa Ngài, đúng thế, nhưng mà lũ chó con cũng được ăn những mảnh vụn trên bàn chủ rơi xuống." Bấy giờ Đức Giê-su đáp: "Này bà, lòng tin của bà mạnh thật. Bà muốn sao thì sẽ được vậy." Từ giờ đó, con gái bà được khỏi..” (Mt 15, 25-28).

Anh cḥị em thân mến trong Chúa Kitô, Hôm nay Chúa Nhật thứ 20 Thường Niên, tôi muốn cùng quý Ông Bà và Anh Chị Em suy niệm đoạn Phúc Âm của Thánh Matthêu (15,25-2) nói về người đàn bà ngoại giáo ở xứ Canaan đến van xin Chúa Giêsu cứu chữa người con gái của bà đang bị quỷ ám hành hạ.Bà ta đến bái lạy mà thưa Người rằng: "Lạy Ngài, xin cứu giúp tôi!" Người đáp: "Không nên lấy bánh dành cho con cái mà ném cho lũ chó con." Bà ấy nói: "Thưa Ngài, đúng thế, nhưng mà lũ chó con cũng được ăn những mảnh vụn trên bàn chủ rơi xuống." Bấy giờ Đức Giê-su đáp: "Này bà, lòng tin của bà mạnh thật. Bà muốn sao thì sẽ được vậy." Từ giờ đó, con gái bà được khỏi. Chúng ta hãy đặt mình vào vai trò của một người mẹ, và lập lại lời đối đáp giữa Chúa Giêsu và bà mẹ ấy để cảm nghiệm đuợc tâm tình của người mẹ khi nài xin sự chữa lành cho con mình. Đó chính là môt bài học đích thực về cách cầu xin mà Chúa cho chúng ta thấy nơi người đàn bà ngoại giáo này. Một người không hề học biết mô t chữ về Kinh Thánh mà được Chúa khen thưởng : "Này bà, lo ng tin của bà mạnh thật. Bà muốn sao thì sẽ được vậy." Còn Thánh Phêrô, vị Tông Đồ thân cận của Chúa thì bị Chúa trách trong bài Phúc âm tuần trước, “Người đâu mà kém tin vậy!” Lời khen bà mẹ này va trách móc Thánh Phêrô của Chúa Giêsu xưa kia cũng là cho chúng ta ngày nay, là HAY VỮNG LÒNG TIN VÀ BIẾT KHIÊM NHƯỜNG KHI CẦU NGUYÊN để được Chúa nhận lời. Lời cầu nguyện cần phải có lòng thành khẩn. Có ai có thể so sánh được lòng thành khẩn của một người mẹ van xin cho đứa con gái của mình. Muốn có lòng thành khẩn thì phải có tình yêu. Người đàn bà này vì yêu thương con mình, mà không đành để con mình bị quỷ ám hành hạ dày xéo, nên đã không sợ hãi và bất chấp mọi thứ để tìm kiếm Chúa Giêsu mà van xin Ngai. Bà sẵn sàng chịu tất cả hậu quả bị sỉ nhục hất hui miễn sao con bà được thoát nạn quỷ ám. Liệu chúng ta co thành khẩn được như người ṃẹ này không, hay là vừa cầu nguyện và mới chờ đợi một chút là đã trở mặt với Chúa ngay với thái độ trịch thượng bất cần và không tin, và thậm chí con than trách Chúa nữa? Người đàn bà này không làm vậy, khi bị các môn đệ khó chịu và bàn tính xua đuổi bà, bà đã không tự ái bỏ đi mà còn co thái độ cung kính nữa. Bà vái lạy Chúa Giêsu rồi mới van xin. Lời trả lời của Chúa xem ra như cự tuyệt mà còn có lời ví von xem bà như là chó vì bà ta không phải là người Do Thai. Nghe thế, chẳng những bà không cự lại mà còn nhận than phận là chó mà thưa: "Thưa Ngài, đúng thế, nhưng mà lũ chó con cũng được ăn những mảnh vụn trên bàn chủ rơi xuống." Bấy giờ Đức Giê-su đáp: "Này bà, lòng tin của bà mạnh thật. Bà muốn sao thì sẽ được vậy." Từ giờ đó, con gái bà được khỏi. Lời cầu khẩn của bà được Chúa ban thưởng không phải là một phần hay mảnh vụn, nhưng được tất cả, không giới hạn, tùy theo ý muốn của bà. Thât ra, Chúa đã không coi bà là chó mà xem bà là người con, vi những ai tin vào Ngài thì Ngài cho họ quyền trở nên con cai của Thiên Chúa. Chỉ có người con mới xin gì cũng được. Thật ra Chúa Giêsu đã nhìn thấy lòng của bà ngay từ đầu, nên Chúa muốn dùng bà để dạy cho các Thánh Tông Đồ của Chúa mô t bài học về cầu nguyện. Muốn được nhậm lời thì cần phai có một đức tin mạnh mẽ và lòng khiêm tốn. Đức tin nối liên mối dây liên hệ giữa chúng ta với Thiên Chúa. Con cái Chua hay người ngoại chỉ khác nhau ở đức tin. Đức Khiêm nhường giúp ta nên giống Chúa và trở nên con cái Chúa. Hãy nhìn lại chính mình để xét xem đã bao lần chúng ta đã bỏ cuộc khi câu xin mà không thấy có kết quả ngay? Chẳng qua chúng ta đa không thực sự tín thác vào Chúa nên dễ dàng thất vọng va bỏ cuộc ngay từ đầu hoặc tìm một chỗ dựa nào khác ngoai Thiên Chúa? Lạy Chúa, xin tha thứ và ban cho chúng con mô t đức tin và lòng khiêm nhường như của người đàn bà xứ Canaan này. Amen. Lm. Anthony Nguyễn Duy Tường

Để đáp ứng nhu cầu đời sống Tâm Linh và Đức Tin cho Cộng Đoàn Dân Chúa, vào mỗi Thứ Sáu Tuần Thứ Hai sau Thứ Sáu đầu tháng, chúng ta có giờ cầu nguyện chung của Cộng Đoàn bắt đầu từ 7pm tối đến 8:30pm tối, để được hiểu biết thêm về Thiên Chúa và cầu nguyện cho những nhu cầu cần thiết của cá nhân, gia đình, và giáo xứ, dưới sự hướng dẫn của Cha Anthony Nguyễn Duy Tường. Buổi cầu nguyện đầu tiên sẽ vào Thứ Sáu ngày 8 tháng 9 năm 2017 lúc 7giờ tối tại nhà thờ Thánh Maria Goretti. Xin mời Cộng Đoàn Dân Chúa tham dự đông đủ.

Giáo xứ chân thành cám ơn đến 705 gia đình đã đóng góp trên $225,268.00 cho các việc mục vụ ADA 2017 của Giáo phận San Jose. Giáo xứ chúng ta cần $35,232.00 để đạt chỉ tiêu Giáo phận đề ra là $260,500.00. Nếu ai chưa đóng góp thì xin cố gắng đóng góp với khả năng của mình để giúp Đức Giám mục Patrick McGrath trong công tác mục vụ trong Giáo phận.
