Passion Sunday (Lent V)
Readings [YEAR C]: page 897
(Green JourneySongs book)
To the exiles in Babylon, Isaiah foretells a new
exodus (First Reading), when the Lord will lead His
people from capvity to freedom (Responsorial
Psalm). True freedom is rooted in the person of
Our Lord, not in observance of the Law (Second
Reading). It is Our Lord who challenges us to
examine our own hearts before self-righteously
judging others (Gospel).

PRAYER TO ST. PEREGRINE
O great St. Peregrine, you have been called "The
Mighty," "The Wonder-Worker," because of the
numerous miracles which you have obtained from God for those who have had recourse to you. For so many
years you bore in your own flesh this cancerous disease that destroys the very fiber of our being, and who had
recourse to the source of all grace when the power of man could do no more. You were favored with the
vision of Jesus coming down from His Cross to heal your affliction. Ask of God and Our Lady, the cure of
the sick whom we entrust to you. Aided in this way by your powerful intercession, we shall sing to God, now
and for all eternity, a song of gratitude for His great
goodness and mercy. Amen.

APRIL 07, 2019 † PASSION SUNDAY
M y Dear Parish Family,
We have now entered “Passion6de”, the
last weeks of Lent and the beginning of Holy
Week. This Sunday is “Passion Sunday”, (also called
Lent V). On Passion Sunday the custom of veiling
religious images in the church is observed. Veiling the
statues and images reminds us in a visual way that our
faith in all its glory is made possible only through the
work of Christ in His suffering and death on the Cross.
When we cover or remove these holy and sacred
images that we are so accustomed to, we are starkly
confronted and reminded in a poignant way of all that
Christ has own for us.
This week I experienced one of those surreal days
that many priests all too oTen understand– within the
course of two hours, I received a very unkind note from
an individual and also a very loving and thoughUul giT.
Both the nega6ve and the posi6ve experience took
their toll. As human beings we don’t like being on the
receiving end of an unkind or uncharitable encounter.
And yet, even in those unpleasant moments, God
allows us to grasp that these moments present us with
an opportunity for honest introspec6on and personal
growth as well as charity and forgiveness. All things
that come more intensely into focus in Our Lord’s
Passion these next two weeks.
On the posi6ve side, I received a beau6ful picture,
along with a very kind note. The picture depicts a
young girl giving a young boy a cup of water. The
simple image of “a cup of water” being given without
ceremony and in charity reminds us all that charity,
kindness and compassion are not outside of our reach;
any more than is our ability to give someone in need a
cup of water.
As previously men6oned, the next few weeks will
be filled with many opportuni6es for spiritual growth
and renewal. For your convenience, they are listed in
the yellow box on the back page of this bulle6n. Please
post this schedule where you can readily refer to it.
You are invited to aXend and par6cipate in the
Liturgies and Processions that mark Palm Sunday
(April 16th), and the Triduum (Holy Thursday,
Good Friday and Holy Saturday) culmina6ng in the
Great Vigil of Easter on Holy Saturday night at 8PM.
By par6cipa6ng in these beau6ful liturgies and acts of
devo6on, you can more fully enter into and more
deeply contemplate Our Lord’s saving Passion, Death
and Resurrec6on.
Please note that some regularly scheduled Mass
mes etc., may change during this me; so it’s best to
keep a copy of this bullen handy. Fr. Eric

EMBRACING STEWARDSHIP IN OUR LIVES
In the area of treasure, some Chris6ans choose the
biblical norm of giving 10% of their treasure. Some,
because of circumstances, give more than that.
Others might start at 2%, or 3%, or 4%, and work
upward.
DIVINE MERCY CHAPLET
In prepara6on for Divine Mercy Sunday, (April 28th),
the Divine Mercy Chaplet will be publicly recited in
the church each night this week at 7PM. The public
recita6on of the Divine Mercy Chaplet will conclude
at 6PM on Saturday, April 27th. All welcome!
BECOME AN ADVOCATE Would you like to help Catholics return to the
sacraments and non-Catholics to receive them for
the first 6me? The Diocesan Tribunal needs
volunteer advocates to assist divorced people to be
able to receive the sacraments and be free to marry
in the Church. Advocates must be Catholic and, if
married, in a valid marriage. Training is done by
email at no cost to you. If you would like more
informa6on, please speak with Father Eric.
Article #44 “’What is the Easter Triduum?”
The Easter Triduum is also known as the “Holy Triduum” or the “Paschal Triduum”, or “The Three Days.” It is the period of three days that begins with the liturgy on the evening of Holy Thursday and reaches its high point in the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night, the night before Easter Sunday. It recalls the Passion, Death, Burial, and Resurrection of Our Lord, as portrayed in the Gospels. Since the 1955 reform by Pope Pius XII, the Easter Triduum has been more clearly distinguished as a separate liturgical period. Previously, all these celebrations were advanced by more than twelve hours. The Mass of the Lord's Supper and the Easter Vigil were celebrated in the morning of Thursday and Saturday respectively, and Holy Week and Lent were seen as ending only on the approach of Easter. After the Gloria at the Mass of the Lord's Supper all church bells are silenced and the organ is not used. The period that lasted from Thursday morning to before Easter Sunday began was once, in Anglo-Saxon times, referred to as "the still days". In the Catholic Church, weddings, which were once prohibited throughout the entire season of Lent and during certain other periods as well, are prohibited during the Triduum. Please check the schedule above and plan to join us as we celebrate the Sacred Triduum here at SFA!
