FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER In a way, Easter Time for the Church is like springtime for the world, and for those of us who live in the northern hemisphere, it is wonderful that they coincide. The world around us celebrates new life: trees and plants are budding, animals have come out of hibernation, the sun is out longer. As Christians, we also celebrate new life: Jesus is risen, the readings recount the infancy of the early church, we have new

life in the Lord by our baptism. Let us celebrate this new life as we continue celebrating this holy season.

PARISH MAY DEVOTION

Monday, May 14

Please join us on Monday, May 14 at 7:00pm in Church for a parish May devo-tion honoring the Blessed Mother.

The children from the parish will process from the school to the church followed by a prayer service to honor Mary, the Mother of God. We hope to see you there!

O Mary, virgin mother of God, pray to Jesus for me!

Mass intentions are still available for 2018 and can be sched-uled at the rectory during regular business hours. What a won-derful way to remember a deceased loved one on their birthday, anniversary of death, etc. Mass intentions can also be made for “special intentions” designated for the living.

BEGINNING OF SUMMER PARTY Mark your calendars for Friday evening, May 25 (rain date Sunday, May 27) for our “Beginning of the Summer Party.” Thanks to the generosity of so many in support of this parish celebration of summer, there is no entrance fee or charge for food, drinks or games. We do ask that you bring your favorite dessert for the dessert table and maybe a citronella candle for your table to keep away those “uninvited guests”. As always, all are welcome. The important thing is getting everyone, young and not so young, together and enjoying each other’s company. We look forward to seeing everyone.

(a) Weekly target necessary to fund Parish operating expenses and avoid operating deficit. As followers of Christ Jesus, we are reminded that all things including life itself are a gift from God. What matters to God is not the gift, but the giver. Giving is God’s invitation to a way of life. It helps us to overcome our selfishness and love of things. What we do with what we have been given is a sign to God and to the world of the depth and meaning of our commitment. By recalling that all is gift, we therefore must strive to be generous with the financial gifts, both great and small, that God has be-stowed upon us. Thank you for your support and your generosity to God and to St. Bernadette Parish. St. Bernadette Parish has enlisted Parish Giving to provide its parishioners and supporters with the opportunity to use Electronic Funds Transfer as an alternative method for giving. The Program is free of charge for parishioners. More information about Parish Giving is available on our Parish web site: www.stbl.org on the “Parish Giving” page.

A PRAYER OF HOPE

Lord Jesus, I pray this day for strength,

because there are times

when things get tough,

and I just want to quit.

Lord Jesus, I ask this day for a generous

share in Your love, because there

are times when people forget me,

and I am tempted to lose hope.

Lord Jesus, I seek this day for Your light

to guide my steps, because there

are times when life gets cloudy

and dark, and I lose my way.

Help me, O Lord, to pick up the pieces,

wipe my tears, face the sun, and

start again, for all is possible

when I place my faith and trust

in You, my Saving God.

Amen.

ST. BERNADETTE SCHOOL

From PreK 4 It has been a busy time in PreK 4! Our little ones have grown so much as they explored and cele-

brated the seasons together. Recently we have planted seeds and taken nature walks as we look for the many signs of spring. We had such fun celebrating the joy of Easter wearing our bonnets and hats during our Easter parade! Throughout Lent the students looked for acts of kindness to reinforce the message that God is love. With Prayer Partners, the children learned about the love that Jesus showed by taking up His cross for us. We look forward to May as we get ready to honor Mary, our Blessed Mother and our super PreK 4 moms at our Mother’s Day Tea. We are so blessed!

Bernie’s Big Bucks are Back St. Bernadette School families will be selling Bernie’s “Backyard” Bucks in the coming weeks. The cost of the calen-dar is $20 and winning numbers will coincide with the May evening (7pm drawing) lottery numbers. This is the last weekend that calendars will be sold after all of the masses by our parish school students. The proceeds from this fundraiser will be used to make our Bernie Bear’s Back-yard a safe play area for our PreK and Kindergarten children — a reality for the 2018-2019 school year. I know that working together this worthwhile project will move forward. For more information contact Kim Detweiler at [email protected] or Maureen Booth at [email protected]. Thank you for your generosity and support. Congratulations to those students who achieved honors at Archbishop Carroll High School.
