1 Area of applicability

These safety instructions apply to the pressure transmitters VEGABAR series 50 and VEGABAR

series 60 of type series VEGABAR BR51.C******Z/H/P/F***, VEGABAR BR52/53/54.C*****Z/H/P/

F**** and type series VEGABAR BR61.C******H/P/F***, VEGABAR BR64/65/67.C*****H/P/F*** andVEGABAR BR66.C*******H/P/F*** according to the EC type approval certificate PTB 03 ATEX 2035 X

with the third supplement (certification number on the type label).

2 In general

The measuring instruments on pressure basis VEGABAR BR5*/6*.C… are used for pressure andlevel measurement also in hazardous areas.

The measured products can also be combustible liquids, gases, mist or vapour.

The VEGABAR BR5*/6*.C… consist of an electronics housing with integrated oscillator, a processfitting element and a sensor, the pressure measuring cell with optionally connected isolateddiaphragm. As an option the indicating and adjustment module can also be integrated.

The VEGABAR BR5*/6*.C… are suitable for use in hazardous atmospheres of all combustiblematerials of explosion group IIA, IIB and IIC for applications requiring instruments of category 1G,

category 1/2G or category 2G.

If the VEGABAR BR5*/6*.C… are installed and operated in hazardous areas, the general Exinstallation regulations EN 60079-14 as well as these safety instructions must be observed.

The operating instructions as well as the valid Ex mounting regulations and standards for electricalequipment must be observed.

The installation of explosion-endangered systems must always be carried out by qualified personnel.

2.1 Category 1G instruments

The VEGABAR BR5*/6*.C… are installed in hazardous areas requiring instruments of category 1G.

2.2 Category 1/2G instruments

The process connection element is installed in the separating wall, which separates areas in whichinstruments of category 2G or 1G are required. The electronics housing is installed in hazardousareas, requiring instruments of category 2. The sensor is installed in hazardous areas requiringinstruments of category 1G.

2.3 Category 2G instruments

The VEGABAR BR5*/6*.C… are installed in hazardous areas requiring instruments of category 2G.

100 µH and Cwire = 2.8 µF are not exceeded. Theindication and adjustment module integrated inVEGABAR BR5*/6*.C… and the connected VEGA-

CONNECT are taken into account.When using the delivered VEGA connection cablebetween VEGABAR BR5*/6*.C… and the externalindication unit VEGADIS 61, the following listed cableinductances Li and cable capacitances Ci must betaken into account with cable lengths > 50 m.

Circuit between sensor unit and externalelectronics

In ignition protection type intrinsic safety Ex ia IIC

For VEGABAR 51/52/54.C… and VEGABAR 61/64/

65/66/67.C… in the version with fix mounted cable onthe sensor unit and external electronics, the cablelength between the external housing and the sensorunit may not exceed 180 m; with VEGABAR 53/63.C… with external housing it may not exceed 50 m.

The intrinsically safe circuits are electrically separated from parts which can be grounded.

The metallic parts of the VEGABAR BR5*/6*.C… are electrically connected with the earth terminals.

For applications requiring instruments of category 2G, the intrinsically safe power supply and signalcircuit can correspond to protection class ia or ib. For connection to a circuit with protection class ib,the ignition protection type identification is Ex ib IIC T6.

For applications requiring equipment of category 1G or 1/2G, the intrinsically safe power supply andsignal circuit must correspond to protection class ia.

For applications requiring instruments of category 1G or 1/2G the VEGABAR BR5*/6*.C… ispreferably connected to appropriate equipment with galvanically isolated, intrinsically safe circuits.

4 Application conditions

5 Protection against static electricity

The VEGABAR BR5*/6*.C… in versions with electrostatically chargeable plastic parts, such as e.g.plastic housing,metal housing with inspection window, with plastic coated sensors, suspension cableor suspension hose, distance tube or connection cable with the separated version, a caution labelpoints out the safety measures that must be taken with regard to electrostatic charges duringoperation.

Caution: Plastic parts! Danger of static charge!

When used as category 1G instrument, a suitable overvoltage arrester, e. g. type B62-36G fromVEGA (TÜV 07 ATEX 553276) must be connected according to EN 60079-14 chapter 12.3, forprotection against voltage surges.

7 Grounding

In order to avoid the danger of electrostatic charging of the metallic parts, the VEGABAR BR5*/6*.

C…must be electrostatically connected to the local potential equalisation (transfer resistance ≤ 1MΩ)

e. g. via the ground terminal when used as category 1G respectively 1/2G instrument.

8 Impact and friction sparks

When used as category 1G or 1/2G instruments, the VEGABAR BR5*/6*.C… in aluminium/titaniumversions must be mounted in such a way that sparks from impact and friction between aluminium/

titanium and steel (except stainless steel, if the presence of rust particles can be excluded) cannotoccur.

9 Material resistance

For applications requiring instruments of category 1G or 1/2G the VEGABAR BR5*/6*.C… must onlybe used in products against which the wetted materials are sufficiently resistant.

10 Mounting with external indicating unit VEGADIS 61

The intrinsically safe signal circuit between VEGABAR BR5*/6*.C… and the external indicating unitVEGADIS 61 should be installed without grounding. The required insulation voltage is > 500 V AC.

When using VEGA connection cable, this requirement is fulfilled. If it is necessary to ground the cablescreen, this must be carried out according to EN 60079-14 paragr. 12.2.2.3.

11 Installation/mounting

The VEGABAR BR5*/6*.C… have to be mounted such that they are effectively secured against thedanger by touching the sensor on the vessel wall under consideration of the vessel installations andflow conditions in the vessel. Especially suspension pressure transmitters and versions with distancetube lengths of more than 3 m are concerned.
