Safety at BravidaWe operate in a high-risk sector, at a fast pace, with lots of different parties involved in hazardous environments. No one wants to get injured, but it still happens. This booklet sets out what you can do to avoid the most common injuries.

An accident can happen to anyone. To you or your colleagues. These are often injuries that, quite simply, could have been avoided if the person stopped to think, checked one more time or used the right protective equipment.

Work safely: some simple rules of thumbWorking safely doesn’t have to be complicated. Most risks can be avoided through a few basic steps.

1. Start by talking to the BAS-U/Coordination Manager who is in charge of coordinating health and safety at the workplace.

2. Think before you start work! Use the STOPP approach.

3. If you suspect there is a risk, make a written risk assessment.

4. Use the right personal protective equipment, every time. If it still seems dangerous: say ‘STOPP’.

5. Report risks using BIA. It can save lives; both your own and that of your colleagues. No deadline is more important than your safety.

As a Bravida employee you have a responsibility to act if you notice a risk, whether it affects you or a colleague.

The standard you walk past is the standard you accept. If you see a risk, take action!

The most common risksBIA provides a good overview of our accidents, near misses and risks. Different activities carry different risks. Below is a summary of the main risks at Bravida.

Consider the following: • Do you encounter any of these risks in your work?

• In what tasks?

• What do you do to avoid these risks?

Risk assessment and safety analysis

STOPPStopThinkObservePlanProceed

Work safely, think firstMost accidents happen completely unnecessarily. You probably know what the main risks are in your work and how to avoid them. But the most common cause of accidents is ignoring basic safety measures. Don’t do this. Stop and think before you start work.

1 Coordinate with the customerWhen you’re working at a customer site, talk to the BAS-U/Coordination Manager. What risks are there in the workplace? What risks are down to you? Bear in mind that risks can change from one day to the next.

2 Use the STOPP approachStop and think before you start work. Are there any risks here? You should use the STOPP approach to help you. You must always think ‘STOPP’ before you start, however small the task. It only takes 30 seconds.

3 Make a written risk assessment If you believe a risk may exist, you must always conduct a written risk assessment together with your work team. The checklist is available in the BIA app, Handyman and the printed ‘Risk assessment and safety analysis’ pad. The risk assessment should be available during the course of the work and updated on an ongoing basis. It’s important that everyone in the work team is informed about changes.

You must ensure you have the correct personal protective equipment, together with your manager. Compulsory protective equipment at Bravida consists of:

• A hard hat with chin strap.

• Safety footwear.

• Protective goggles.

• Protective gloves.

• High-visibility clothing.

This equipment may be adjusted based on the written risk assessment. You may also need hearing protectors, personal fall protection equipment (PFPE) or respiratory protection equipment (RPE). If your work does not require full protective equipment and you are considering not using compulsory protective equipment, this must be documented in a written risk assessment by your manager. Always purchase protective equipment through Bravis to ensure you get the right quality and price.

If the task in hand appears dangerous, even with the right protective equipment, say ‘STOPP’ and stop working. Talk to your manager or safety officer.

5 Report risks using BIAIf you identify a risk, report it using the BIA app. This allows us to see what risks exist, and proactively design good preventive measures so accidents don’t occur in future.

The easiest way is to report risks using the BIA app. Brain and BrApp contain information about how to get started.

4 Use compulsory personal protective equipment

How to avoid cutsCuts to the hands and fingers are very common at Bravida, even though they can be easily avoided. How? Wear gloves!

In recent years, almost 40 percent of accidents submitted through our BIA reporting system have involved cuts to hands and fingers. These injuries mainly result from employees cutting themselves on materials, suffering cuts on hands/fingers from drills or screws or using the wrong tools for the wrong task.

Always use protective gloves

• At Bravida it is compulsory to wear protection class 3–5 (B, D) gloves at all workplaces.

• It is possible to use other types of gloves if the work requires this.

• In some cases it may be possible to deviate from the rules: - where gloves do not provide protection – where gloves make it impossible to perform a task or actually increase the risk of injury This should be documented in a written risk assessment.

How to avoid fallsFalls are another of the most common causes of injury at Bravida. These are categorised as falls from height and falls from same level.

Avoid falls from heightFall protection should always be used when work is being carried out at a height of over two metres. Fall protection should also be used at lower heights if there is a risk of injury.

Types of fall protection

• Guardrails and scaffolding

• Mobile or fixed work platforms

• Safety cages

• Safety nets

• Personal fall protection equipment (PFPE)

When choosing fall protection, personal fall protection equipment (PFPE) is always a last resort. Whatever is chosen, you must be trained in the equipment you use.

Avoid falls from same levelFalls from same level refer to someone falling over, slipping, tripping or putting their foot through a supporting surface. This does not refer to any advanced fall protection methods; common sense is what is required:

• Be careful!

• Ensure your work area is tidy.

• Avoid carrying materials in both hands in a way that stops you seeing where you’re walking.

• Make sure you wear safety footwear of the correct size.

Working from laddersWorking from ladders can be convenient, but it is associated with an increased risk of accident. At Bravida we only work from ladders that meet ‘Bra Arbetsmiljöval’ health and safety requirements. This ensures the best conditions for working from ladders for our employees.

Wrong approach

Wrong height of step ladder

Unsteady posture

Standing too high up on a ladder

No safety footwear

Unsecured tools

Slippery stepladder

Uneven surface

Faulty stepladder

Faulty ladder legs

Correct approach

Adjust height accordingly for the task

Always ensure you are correctly balanced and

have a firm hold

Always ensure your body is facing towards the work area.

Always wear safety footwear

Always ensure ladder steps are clean

Ensure that ladders are standing on an even surface

How to avoid electric shocksEvery year lots of Bravida employees suffer electric shocks. This is often because they ignore safety procedures. Don’t do this! Disconnect equipment, and always check the voltage yourself. An electric shock can have serious consequences.

Electrical work requires a compulsory written risk assessment to be undertaken for each task. Use the right personal protective equipment. Certain tasks require you to have additional protective equipment, e.g. when working where there is a risk of arcing.

Basic safety rulesWork with no live current has five basic safety rules:

• Disconnect the component.

• Protect against coupling.

• Always check the component is disconnected. Check the voltage yourself using a voltmeter. Never rely on anyone else.

• When working with high voltage and with low-voltage overhead cables: earth and short-circuit.

• Shield live components in the vicinity.

Always check the voltage yourself before you start work to ensure the operating voltage has been disconnected. Don’t rely on anyone else!

It is important that a medical examination be carried out following an electrical injury. Use the checklist on the electrical safety card and in BIA for a medical examination in the event of an electrical injury.

If someone suffers an electric shock• Turn off the power.

• Check the condition of the injured person.

• Get help from those nearby. Contact medical specialists and tell them the person has suffered an electrical injury.

• Check the injured person and begin first aid if necessary.

• For serious accidents call 112!

Always seek medical care in the event of:• Current passing the body.

• Arcing.

• Loss of consciousness.

• Numbness or seizures.

• Lightning strike.

1 Give first aid/cardiopulmanory resuscitation (CPR). If necessary, call on those at the workplace who can give first aid/CPR. Apply cooling immediately in the event of burns.

2 Call 112, SOS Alarm and dispatch a guide for emergency services vehicles. In the event of a serious environmental incident, prevent discharge or limit the extent if this is possible and presents no risk.

3 Secure the incident site from further incident and for investigation. Cordon off.

4 Ensure someone accompanies any injured people to hospital. Note the name and telephone number of the person who accompanies them.

5 Inform your immediate manager.

6 An appointed contact within Bravida is responsible for any contact with the media, the Swedish Work Environment Authority and the police. See the Serious Accident and Serious Near Miss checklist in BravidaBAS.

Report all near misses and accidents using BIAIf accidents are not reported they become invisible That means they can’t be prevented in future. So it’s important to report all types of accident using BIA; large or small, whatever the cause of the accident.
