FEAST OF FAITH

Invitation to the Eucharistic Prayer After the presider washes his hands, he turns to the people

and says, “Pray that our sacrifice may be acceptable to

God the almighty Father.” We have brought forward bread

and wine, and now we are asked to see in these simple

gifts upon the altar a sacrifice offered to God. Our

response is rich in theological meaning. “May the Lord

accept the sacrifice at your hands.” The words point to the

unique role of the priest, whose hands, at his ordination,

were anointed for just this purpose: that he might “sanctify

the Christian people and offer sacrifice to God” (Rite of

Ordination). We ask God to accept our sacrifice not

because it is worthy of God, but simply “for the praise and

glory of his name.” God does not need our offering, but

allows us to give it so that we might grow in holiness. And

God, never to be outdone in generosity, gives all that we

have given back to us, “for our good and the good of all

his Church.” This Mass benefits not just those who have

gathered, but, in the mysterious economy of grace, the

whole Church. In the words of Saint Paul, when one part

rejoices, the whole body “share[s] its joy” (1 Corinthians

12:26). —Corinna Laughlin, © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

______________________ July 10, 2011 Celebrate water today! It covers 71 percent of our planet and makes the sky seem blue. It enables us to farm, fish, wash and swim. The earliest forms of life appeared in the oceans, and we are reborn in the waters of baptism. But this gift of God is endangered by chemicals pouring from farms and factories. Isn’t it amazing that we are careless of a resource on which our lives depend! Gospel John 4:8-11, 13-14

Listen to the words of the holy gospel according to John A Samarian woman came to draw water from the well. Jesus asked her, “Would you please give me a drink of water?” “You are a Jew,” she replied, “and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink of water when Jews and Samaritans won’t have anything to do with each other?” Jesus answered, “You don’t know what God wants to give you, and you don’t know who is asking you for a drink. If you did, you would ask me for the water that gives life.” “Sir,” the woman said, “you don’t even have a bucket, and the well is deep. Where are you going to get this life-giving water?” Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will get thirsty again. But no one who drinks the water I give will ever be thirsty again.” The gospel of the Lord. Reflection: Why is water a good symbol for all of God’s gifts to us? How does my family try to save water? Prayer: God, our creator, source of living water, you make the desert bloom, and dry lands bear fruit. In the waters of baptism we are reborn through the power of your Spirit, and the grace of Christ Jesus. For the gift of water we praise you, for ever and ever. Amen.

July 10, 2011 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time

______________________ July 14, 2011 Today we remember Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha (CAT-uh-ree tek-KOK-with-uh), “The Lily of the Mohawks.” Her father was a Mohawk chief and her mother a Christian Algonquin. When she was four, they died of smallpox, and Kateri was left scarred and almost blind. (Tekakwitha means “one who feels her way along”) When Kateri was eleven, missionaries came to her village. She was baptized on Easter Sunday, 1676, and soon moved to a Christian village. She tended the sick, cared for the children and spent many hours in prayer. She died in 1680 at the age of 24. Prayer: Lord God, You led Kateri Tekakwitha To give you her whole life and energy. Share your life and your Spirit With all your people. Make us faithful and true. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. _________________________________________ This day in history— Happy Bastille Day! On July 14th, 1798 the French people overthrew the king and freed the prisoners from the dungeons of the Bastille. The key to the hated prison was given to George Washington, because he had shown the world how to govern a free republic. Guess what colors the French people put in their new flag! If you said red, white and blue you were right!
