Sacred Heart Newsletter Newsletter No 9 Term 2 11 June 2020 Dear Sacred Heart Families and Friends, Fr. Steve’s Mass and Homily: The link to last weekend’s Mass can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ld5Era31zEc We have all felt a great sense of relief and happiness with our Years 3-6 students returning to school from Remote Education. Even though it has been an exceptionally cold start to their return, the smiles on their faces, on the faces of the staff and, yes, on the faces of the parents and grandparents has been gratifying to witness. While all classes were back into normal (pre-COVID Lockdown) operation straight away, many classes made the decision to minimise the usage of computers for the first few days and increase their Social Emotional Learning activities and team games. Last week I asked families for any feedback that you might have about your time in Remote Education that you might be able to share with me, as of yet I have not received any feedback. As a staff we have discussed our experiences and learnings and have agreed that there are a few things that we feel should be considered at greater length in the near future. The staff feel that the use of instructional videos for teaching/revising specific skills and/or concepts worked well during Remote Education and could be used as teaching tools in the classroom. Also we will be reviewing how we develop the students’ skills in following instructions from Prep to Year 6, as a number of staff experienced students needing to be reminded a few times to read the instructions again. Dear Sacred Heart Families and Friends,

Fr. “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old but on building the new.” Socrates. Warm regards Jim O’Sullivan

On Tuesday we welcomed back our Year 3-6 students. It is so great to have all students back at school. The children have all been fantastic; it has been a very successful transition back to face-to-face learning. The staff have also ‘sung the praises’ of the students for the manner in which they have transitioned back. I would like to thank the parents and staff for the dedication and support to the students learning during this time and we look forward to the next two weeks before all parents, teachers and students can have a well-deserved break after what was not a real break for many last holidays. Welcome: This week we welcomed Oliver Parisi and his family to 3/4 JD. Please make them feel welcome to this amazing community when you see them around the school. Dates: Throughout Term 1 and 2 many dates have been shared with families in regards to Sacramental Programs, school closures etc. Please at this stage disregard any dates shared with you and once dates have been finalised we will share these with families through the newsletter. Reports & Learning Conversations: Due to the remote learning that has occurred this term we will distribute reports and have learning conversations in Week 3 Term 3. It is very powerful to have home, school and the student involved in learning conversations so that everyone is clear about future directions and the effort that will be required. As a school we aim to encourage students to take control of their learning and to recognise the growth they are achieving in both social and academic areas, especially during this very different year. The learning conversations are an important opportunity to discuss your child’s progress and to build communication and understanding between home and school. This may look a little different this year, but we will keep you informed once we have clearer directions from CEM. Sacred Heart Day: On Friday 19 June we celebrate Sacred Heart Day. Due to restrictions this will look a lot different this year. Students will celebrate as Levels with a variety of activities organised, weather dependent. The students will be involved in the planting in the welcome garden and around the log fort, they will also be involved in painting a Sacred Heart mural, under the supervision of our amazing art teacher, Suzie Collins. Fr Lenin will celebrate a liturgy and a reflection in regards to Sacred Heart and new beginnings at Sacred Heart with our new gardens and buildings. This will also be celebrated on line.

Borrowed Devices: We ask that all chrome books borrowed by families to support remote learning be returned to school to enable students the use of these devices at school. Please make sure to include the charger. These devices will all need to be cleaned and processed before being available for use at school. School Start and Finish Times: Thank you to all families for your support in regards to pick up and drop off each day. Reminder that the class teachers will be in the classroom from 8.45 am where the students will go directly to the classrooms rather than lining up as we previously were doing. Please do not send your child/ren to school before 8.35 am, as the driveway gates will not be opened before this time. Any students arriving between 8.35 am and 8.45 am will be supervised in the courtyard. At pick up time the students will walk out the front and we ask you to remain out the front of the school in the designated area or in your car until this time and not to come down the driveway. Families with a surname starting from A to I will be dismissed at 3.15 pm and the remaining families at 3.25 pm. Enrolments for Year 7 2022 (current Grade 5 students): Reminder to families of students in Year 5 that if you are looking at your son/daughter attending a Catholic Secondary school in 2022 applications close late August. You will need to make contact with the schools to obtain application forms. House Points: At the conclusion of week 8 the results were as follows:

BUNJIL (BLUE) CORDNER (GREEN) MACKILLOP (RED)

6070 6440 6610

Riddles of the Week: Last week’s riddles and answers were:

What question can you never answer yes too? Are you asleep?

If you have me, you want to share me. If you share me, you haven’t got me. What am I? A secret

What do you put on the table, cut and pass around but do not eat? A deck of cards

Birthdays: Happy Birthday to the following students and staff that have a birthday in this newsletter time (Thursday to Thursday): Heidi Madden, Oliver Parisi, Daniel McIlroy, Nala Santostefano, Peter Rickard and Sandy Morgan.
