Introduction

“If you just build it, they won’t come – you need to shape

users’ behaviour by acknowledging their world view rather

than your own as a technology implementer”.

(Tom Haynes, 2008)

What type of learners do we have today?

•Digital literate

•Digital natives

•Collaborators,

•Connectors,

•Co-creators

Page 3: Saaste Presentation 01july2009

Introduction

What’s required to overcome?

•3-E Strategy

•Evident – useful for easy life

•Easy to use – avoid feelings of inadequacy

•Essential – to carry out ones job

What type of educators are we today?

•Digital illiterate

•Digital immigrants

•Independent,

•Single source dependants,

•Consumers

Concerns

Technology transforming learning poses concerns to educators

How to

•improve on ways to engage learners f2f or online

• become part of advanced pedagogical discussions not

readily transferable to f2f or online

• become users of technology and social networking

• avoid social element of learning being replaced by

technology

Page 5: Saaste Presentation 01july2009

Changes

1.Transformative Change

•Teaching and learning practices undergoing conceptual and

technological changes

2. Education and fragmented information

•There is hyper-fragmentation of information through:

•Internet development

•Breakdown of traditional information structure

•Solution through aggregation of information using tools like

blog, wikis ebooks

Page 6: Saaste Presentation 01july2009

Changes

3. Coherence and fragmentation

•Information initially pre-packaged (CD, textbook, newscast

etc).

•Create an integrated network of information (3Cs)

•(piece together, dialogue, reframe, rethink, connect develop

a pattern to give a meaning)

4. Validation of information

•Aggregation of contributions from different sources and

discussions have brought a change in the validation of

information

Page 7: Saaste Presentation 01july2009

Changes

5. Dissemination of information

•Online journals

•Peer review even after publication

6. Sharing of information

•OJS, blogs, wikis rapid information sharing.

•Conferencing tools like Elluminate and Adobe connect permit

more timely sharing of information

Change Pressure

Pressure influencing educational design:

Global

Social and political The process of knowledge production is

towards social models

Educational

•Transition from industrial era to information era.

•Shift from national perspective to global

perspective.

Increase in collaboration between educators,

schools within and outside the country

Page 9: Saaste Presentation 01july2009

Change Pressure

Technological Technology:

•present in all aspects of society

•controls information creation, sharing and

interactions

•participative web “Web 2.0”, mobile

phones, social networking services,

netbooks

Page 10: Saaste Presentation 01july2009

Components and Processes of Learning

•Social

•an emergent property of interactions

between networks of learners

•Situated

•activities mirror actual situations

•Reflective

•time for learners to assimilate new

information

•Multi-faceted

•engaging, active construction

Components

Process Self-paced

Guided

Cohort

Page 11: Saaste Presentation 01july2009

Connectivism

•Knowledge and cognition distributed across

networks of people and technology

•Learning through the process of connecting,

growing and navigating those networks

Definition

Levels of networking

• Neural – new stimuli, input experiences

•Conceptual – key concepts of afield

•External – development of participatory web

technologies: blogs, wikis, social bookmarking,

facebooks

Technology, Teaching, Learning and Assessment

Technology is not neutral

•It embodies philosophies and ideologies

Nature of technology

Elements of Teaching with technology

•Constant contact between learners and

educators

•Cooperation between learners

•Active learning

•Prompt feedback

•Time on task

•Produces high expectations

•Respect diverse talents and ways of learning

Page 14: Saaste Presentation 01july2009

Technology, Teaching, Learning and Assessment

•Spirit of experimentation

•Engage learners in co-creation of content

•Let go of control of content presentation

approach

•Tolerate failures

Mindset requirements
