First place went to the Lion Oil Co. of El Dorado, Ark. Competing in the "entire com- panies” division of the Petroleum Section - Manufacturing contest, Lago wound up 1955 with a fre- quency rate of .96. Lion Oil’s rate was .56. The 19 refineries entered in the contest work a minimum of 250,000 manhours per month and are among the largest in the world. Lago won the contest in 1954 with a frequency rate of .87. Though its ’55 rate was higher, the company set a new low last year in industrial injuries - 9.92 per 1000 employees. The previous low - 12.67 - was es- stablished in 1954. Lago employees suffered 14 dis- abling injuries during 1955, the same number as 1954, but reduced the number of restricted duty cases by 26. Restricted duty cases in 1954 totaled 160. Lago employees earned one Award of Honor from the council for work- ing more than 3,000,000 consecu- tive manhours without a disabling injury and worked three periods of more than 1,000,000 consecutive in- jury-free manhours. In third place in the contest was the Humble Oil and Refining Co. re- finery at Houston, Texas, with a fre- quency rate of 1.16. The frequency rate on which the contest is decided represents the number of lost-time injuries per million manhours work- ed. Lago beat out 17 other refine- ries to take second place in the National Safety Council’s 1955

petroleum manufacturing safety contest. First place went to the

Lion Oil Co. of El Dorado, Ark.

It’s Not Worth the Risk! Now matter how you look at it, it’s not worth it. That is, losing

your job over the theft of Lago equipment. That's right, you can

lose your job and everything you have built up in that job over the

years for the theft of anything that belongs to Lago.

And, lest it be forgotten, discharge can be automatic. Theft of

company property is a posted offense.

Theft of company supplies and equipment has increased at what

has been called an “alarming” rate. Because of this increase, dis-

ciplinary measures will be stiffened, controls and gate checks will

be tightened and supervisors will take whatever action possible to

keep company property from disappearing.

Don’t get caught in the web of this increased vigilance. The only

way not to fall victim is not to ’’steal.”

Every man and woman hired by Lago is entrusted with company

supplies and equipment. When Lago property is issued, the moral

responsibility of correctly using and returning unused supplies of

equipment lies with the employee. This same responsibility lies with

the employee who, because of his position and trust the company has

in him, has availability to stores of supplies and equipment.

The company has a long history of trust and faith in its employees.

It chooses that way to work. Some employees are violating this trust.

There are some people wearing Lago "fichas’’ who are taking advan-

tage of Lago’s faith in its employees by illegally removing company

property from the concession fer personal use or gainful resale.

While they don’t seem to realize it, the scales are tipped heavily

against those who think they can gain be removing company pro-

perty. Regardless of what the end result of removed Lago equipment

might be, it’s hardly worth the risk......because you're risking YOUR

JOB!

Against the questionable "'gain’’ that can come from selling or

using stolen Lago property is placed a Lago career. A career that

means security, benefits, wages can be forfitted immediately by

stealing any of one of a thousand items Lago daily entrusts to its

employees. It’s hardly worth it.

The irresponsible employees stealing Lago property are committing

more than just an offense: by association they are damaging the high

opinion Lago management holds for its employee body. These mis-

demeanors will also cause the entire employee body inconvience in

such areas as stepped-up controls and checks at the gates. The un-

Christianlike act of stealing born of selfish interests affects the entire

Lago employee group.

Don't take the risk. Stolen property is an invitation to disaster -

disaster that can begin with the loss of a Lago job.

Esso Dining Hall Razed for Roadway

Towering cranes and grunting bulldozers teamed up last month to raze the old Esso Dining Hall and prepare ‘he way for a new parking lot and roadway.

Replaced by a new dining hall opposite the post office, the sprawling wooden structure with its auxiliary storage sheds, cooks’ quarters and other auxiliary buildings was torn down, carted away and burned. The wood was termite-ridden and could not be salvaged

The dining hall was built in 1929 to feed bachelor employees and refinery visitors.

In quick succession the boys and girls belonging to the various groups

of the Lago Colony scout movement ripped off three major activities last month. The entire girl scout group - Brownies, Girl Scouts, Ma-

riners and Senior Girl Scouts - started off the public projects with

a stage show in commemoration of the 25th year of scouting in Lago

Mr. Schwarz has over 20 years of

Lago service commencing in Oc-

tober, 1935. His first position was

that a technical student in the

Technical Service Department. In

1939 he went to the Cracking Divi-

sion as a chemical engineer I. He

later became group head B - Crack-

ing and then group head A.

The position from which Mr.

Schwarz will be promoted is group

head A - Process Economics and

Programming. On occasion, he has

acted as chief chemical engineer. He

once acted in the position of assis-

tant chief engineer and another

time as director of laboratories.

40 Courses Seheduled

ATS To Open Third

Night Term May I

The Aruba Technical School is scheduled to open its third year of

night classes May 1 with registration set for April 10 - 13. The cour- ses are designed to enable a person to learn a trade or improve his

trade skills. The second year of classes wound up last month with 174 or 62!

per cent of those who enrolled originally successfully completing their studies. Successful completions at the

close of the first year were 64 per

cent.

Basic prerequisite for

is six classes of elementary school.

Some courses require an ATS, MULO

or Lago Vocational School diploma.

Students, limited to a maximum of

eight minute classroom periods

each week, will be restricted to

courses relating to their principal

field of study, to basic education

courses or both.

Some 40 courses in English or

Dutch will be offered ranging from

basic arithmetic through carpentry,

electricity, motor mechanics, metal

enrollment

working, process and laboratory

work and pipefitting.

Lago employees whose _ studies

meet the requirements will be elig-

ible for financial assistance under

the company’s Educational Refund

Plan. A Training Division represent-

ative will be at the ATS from 6:15

to 9:15 p.m. during the enrollment

period to help employees complete

the Educational Refund Plan forms.

Applications for assistance under

the plan should be submitted before |

the courses start.

One hundred and eighteen of the

174 who completed the courses last

month were Lago employees.

Groote Beer’ Bids Aruba Farewell; Now in Curacao

The "Groote Beer,” replica of a

Dutch "'botterboot” which is now an

American yacht and called here last

month, finally sailed away on the

next leg of its six-months cruise but

not before it ran into difficulty.

The vessel, built for Herman Goe-

ring but now owned by Robert

Johnson, an Oregon lumber dealer

and building contractor, pulled into

Oranjestad harbor March 12,

After a five-day visit, the "Groote

Beer” sailed for Curacao but its en-

gine broke down midway between

the two islands. Under sail, the ves-

sel headed back for Aruba, Off the

southeast coast the "Groote Beer” was about to be taken in tow when

the boom came around suddenly and

broke. While the vessel was under

repair here the captain resigned.

On March 29, repaired with Lago's help, the "Groote Beer” set sail once

Canadian Naval Craft To Visit Aruba April 11-1é Two destroyer esvorts of the

Royal Canadian Navy will tie up in

Oranjestad Harbor April 11

currently on maneuvers with units

of the Atlantic Fleet, are the HM

CS Crescent and the HMCS Cayuga

The two ships will arrive at

0900 (Aruba time) April 11 and

depart at 1000 April 15. Both ships

will be open to visitors April 13 and

14 from 1400 (2 p.m.) to 1600 (4

p.m.). Of 366- and 378-foot lengths, the

Crescent” and the Cayuga” are not

World War II ships, but the "’Ca-

yuga” did see action in the Korean conflict. The "Crescent" is comman-

ded by Capt. P. D. Taylor, DSC

CD, RCN while the skipper of the

"Cayuga” is Comdr. G. H. Davidson

CD, RCN. Both ships carry a com-

plement of 15 officers and 230 men.

Capt. Taylor is also commander

of the 2nd Escort Squadron, tc

which both ships are attached. Fol-

lowing their operational visit here

On Improvements British Guiana will soon _ start

spending the equivalent of $58 mil-

lion over the next five years on so-

cial and economic development. The

improvement program was approved

late last month by the British gov-

ernment and Sir Patrick M. Reni-

son, governor of British Guiana.

The money will b2 provided by

long-term loans from the World

Bank and British financiers and by

outright grants and _ interest-free)

loans from the British government.

Included in the pian are comple-

tion of a 130,000-acre irrigation and

drainage project in the Boerasirie area, rebuilding the seacoast road

from Surinam to Georgetown, com-

pletion of a 4000-unit housing pro-

gram and extension of electricity to

rural areas.

The $58 million is in addition to

some $14 million made available in

1954.
