Rotterdam School of Management,

Erasmus University (RSM) is the business

school of the renowned Erasmus

University Rotterdam. Founded in 1913,

the university is home to the first Nobel

Prize winner in the Economic Sciences,

Jan Tinbergen. Erasmus University

Rotterdam takes its name from Desiderius

Erasmus, the great 15th-century Dutch

humanist, theologian and philosopher.

Born in Rotterdam, Erasmus became

one of the foremost thinkers and doers of

his time, and a widely travelled scholar.

He is recognised for his open-minded,

iconoclastic and individual ideas. Among

the leading lights of the Renaissance,

Erasmus is widely referred to today as

the “First European” and serves as the

inspiration for RSM’s focus on thought-

leadership in business.

2016 – A YEAR OF POSITIVE

CHANGE FOR RSM.

OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO

SOCIETY IS TO MAKE A

DIFFERENCE.

2016 will be remembered as a year of fear, disbelief, Brexit,

Trump, populism and extremism. At the same time, the

world economy did very well. For RSM, 2016 was a year

of positive change and new developments. We carried

out innovative projects such as massive open online

courses (MOOCs), and developed new interdisciplinary

and international programmes; we saw increasing student

numbers across virtually all programmes, and our faculty

received multiple grants and prestigious awards. We did well

in the rankings, and are very proud to be back in the top 10

of the Financial Times European Business School Ranking.

And, perhaps most importantly, 2016 was the year in which

we revisited our mission statement, which now proclaims

that: RSM is a force for positive change in the world.

THE DEANMESSAGE FROM

5

Fundamentally, business schools have an obligation

to encourage prosperity and well-being for all. That’s

essentially how we create value. Therefore, in 2016 we

initiated a bold strategic move and embarked on the

development of our new mission. This mission, officially

launched in early 2017, will guide the school towards

tackling society’s biggest challenges through its research,

its educational programmes, through alliances, and by

engaging with students, alumni and all our stakeholders.

To this end, a Major Partnerships Office has been

established, which will seek ways in which RSM can enter

into meaningful and impactful activities that benefit our

alumni, stakeholders and society at large.

All in all, 2016 was a year of positive change for

RSM. Looking forward, we will continue to provide

groundbreaking research and education that furthers

excellence in all aspects of management. In doing so,

we develop business leaders who can become a force for

positive change in the world by carrying their innovative

mindset into a sustainable future thanks to our first-class

programmes, which encourage students to become critical,

creative, caring and collaborative thinkers and doers.

In short – RSM is a hub of opportunities for students and

for business, and as always, we would be delighted to

discuss the potential of such opportunities with you.

RSM CAMPUS

Sustainability has been on the

agenda of Erasmus University

Rotterdam (EUR) since 2006, when

the university started up its own

“Greening the Campus” programme.

EUR’s ambition is to develop one of

the most sustainable campuses in

the Netherlands.

11

EUR’s modern Woudestein campus

on the eastern side of Rotterdam

is home to RSM. Recent campus

renovation and redevelopment

projects have extended and improved

studying, living, dining and leisure

facilities to provide more sustainable

and environmentally friendly

accommodation and operations.

EUR aims to increase the sustainability

rate of the Woudestein campus from

seven to eight, and to reduce its CO2

emissions by 30 per cent. Primary

energy use will decrease by 45 per

cent. In the long-term, EUR aims

to render all of Woudestein energy

neutral. The third and final phase of

the campus redevelopment project

is underway and will be completed

in 2020. RSM.NL/CAMPUSVIDEO

RSM IN 2016

MISSIONRSM’s mission is to be a force for positive change in

the world. Building on the entrepreneurial tradition of

Rotterdam and the Netherlands, RSM provides management

research, education and engages with society so people

and organisations can thrive worldwide. As a reference

framework, RSM has adopted the United Nations’ 17

Sustainable Development Goals.

To fulfil its mission, RSM designs and delivers a balanced

portfolio of activities and programmes ranging from

bachelor and specialised master programmes to MBA and

executive development programmes across a full range of

services. Our education programmes are underpinned by our

research; our activities therefore span knowledge creation,

dissemination and application. Our research-driven approach

helps to sustain our top position in the international arena

of business schools, so RSM recruits, develops and retains

faculty at the highest international levels, covering a broad

range of disciplines in management research.

RSM STRATEGY: RSM 3.0RSM’s ambition is to maintain its position as a fully-fledged

international business school that is firmly rooted in the

corporate world and society, connected to and connecting

its alumni. Enhancing RSM’s global reputation and

ensuring financial viability are the overall strategic goals.

We have three strategic priorities to take RSM to 2018:

1. Adapt for the future by offering a unique value

proposition and educational experience.

2. Make our research more impactful. RSM is a research-

driven business school. The challenge for the years to come

is to keep this solid academic foundation while enhancing

the impact and relevance of our research, and making our

academic results more accessible for business and society

as well as for academia.

3. Strengthen our corporate and alumni networks. Alumni

are a critical asset for every business school. Alumni can

share their knowledge and wisdom, give access to data for

research, are ambassadors for the school and a source of

donations. Alumni are essential for developing powerful

corporate networks.

Embedded into RSM’s mission are four core values:

CRITICAL

We enable thinkers and doers – through research, education

and engagement – to challenge the status quo and develop

new knowledge, understanding and practice for positive

change.

CREATIVE

We stimulate individuals and organisations to lead with

ambition, curiosity and courage to create innovative ways of

thinking and acting to advance society and business.

CARING

We make sure that individuals and organisations care:

about others, their environment and themselves. Central to

our approach is I WILL: RSM’s forward-thinking initiative –

saying I WILL – to the resilient future we want to build.

13

COLLABORATIVE

We encourage individuals and organisations to join forces

to advance their mutual interest. Leadership on the basis

of teamwork is the way to tackle small and large challenges

and opportunities locally and globally.

STRATEGY IMPLEMENTATION 2016In addition to the dynamics of our current activities,

changes that have been implemented in 2016 to confirm

this strategy include:

RSM2020 PROJECT DIRECTORDaniel Baltzer joined our school as the RSM2020 Project

Director. The RSM2020 project is about making sure that

any and all relevant individuals, including most of the

34,000 alumni, public and private enterprises and trusts

and foundations will come on board as partners for the next

50 years to jointly develop new generations of top level

decision makers who will master the business challenges

and opportunities up to 2070 and beyond.

DEAN OF DIVERSITYDr Saskia Bayerl, Associate Professor in the Department of

Organisation and Personnel Management, was appointed as

Associate Dean for Diversity. Her two-year appointment will

support the implementation of recommendations resulting

from a report issued earlier in the year by a diversity task

force at RSM.

MSC F&I ADVANCEDA new 16-month master programme, for elite candidates

seeking a career in finance, started in September. Building

on the foundations of the existing 12-month programme

(MSc Finance & Investments), the MSc Finance &

Investments Advanced contains additional elements to give

students an increased advantage in the job market and

superior exposure to potential employers. The Advanced

programme goes beyond the scope of its shorter sister

programme. It features small dedicated classes for

developing in-depth knowledge of advanced finance topics,

and particularly close involvement of companies and

organisations that provide not only case studies and guest

lectures, but also internships and recruitment.

RSM AWARDSThe RSM Executive Board for the first time granted awards

to faculty and support staff in order to show appreciation

for exceptional achievements in the past year. In total, three

grants were awarded: the RSM Outstanding Support Award

for an RSM administrative employee being exceptionally

supportive; the RSM Funding Award for an RSM researcher

who won an exceptional grant, and the RSM Innovative

Teaching Award for an RSM educator who employed

exceptionally innovative teaching methods or content in a

course or curriculum.

During 2016, RSM’s researchers and alumni received

numerous awards in acknowledgement of their excellence

in many areas. As examples:

Assistant Professor Pamala Wiepking received the

Association of Fundraising Professionals 2016 Emerging

14

Scholar Award for her outstanding scholarship related

to fundraising and philanthropy. Wiepking also won the

prestigious Virginia Hodgkinson Research Book Prize for

co-authoring the Palgrave Handbook of Global Philanthropy.

Dr Daniel Fernandes won a 2015 Emerald/EFMD

Outstanding Doctoral Research Award for his PhD research

into the functions and dysfunctions of memory cues.

Dr Fabian Sting received the 2016 Richard Beckhard

Memorial Prize from MIT Sloan Management Review for his

research paper exploring how encouraging help speeds up

product development projects.

Feike Sijbesma, RSM distinguished alumnus and CEO

and chairman of the managing board of DSM received

the Duurzaam Lintje (Sustainable Ribbon) award for his

commitments to combining business with care for society

and the planet.

Ecologist Willem Ferwerda, executive fellow business and

ecosystems at RSM, came top of the annual Duurzame 1OO

(Sustainable 100) ranking published by Dutch newspaper

Trouw.

RSM PhD alumna Basak Manders won the Quality

Management Research Award from the Netherlands’

Network for Quality Management and the Dutch Academy

for her thesis, Implementation and Impact of ISO 9001.

The outstanding contributions made by Jan Dul, professor

of technology and human factors at RSM, in the field of

human factors and ergonomics was recognised by Human

Factors NL.

For the third consecutive year, Professors Henk Volberda

and Justin Jansen are on the Highly Cited Researchers list

of Clarivate Analytics, formerly the Intellectual Property &

Science business of Thomson Reuters.

FIRST MOOCRSM’s first massive open online course (MOOC) – the

MOOC in Innovation Management – started in March. In this

free, nine-week online programme, business executives,

entrepreneurs and students were taught innovation

management concepts, theories of idea generation,

selection, strategy formulation and implementation. With

a study load of two-to-four hours per week, participants

learned to implement innovation projects. With the new

MOOC, RSM gives participants a taste of our range of

management of innovation programmes, such as the full-

time MSc in Management of Innovation, and RSM Executive

Education’s New Business Development and Business

Model Innovation programmes.

GRANTS IN 2016 – A SELECTIONRSM was very successful in obtaining research funding

in 2016 and received a total of ¤ 4,685,662. Remarkable

achievements are the large H2020 projects SELIS and

RUGGEDISED in which RSM plays a significant role. RSM

was very successful in the European Erasmus+ programme,

obtaining funding for the projects ENABLE and ISM. RSM

is the project co-ordinator in both proposals. In 2016,

the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research

(NWO) launched its first call “Complexity in Transport and

Logistics”. RSM obtained funding from this scheme for two

projects: ADAPTATION and Trans-SONIC. Additionally, the

Department of Marketing Management again succeeded in

obtaining a VENI grant.

I WILL AWARDRSM organises the I WILL Award biennially to recognise

and celebrate entrepreneurial initiatives that can change

society and inspire others. The winner receives an award of

¤15,000. The recipient of the 2016 I WILL Award, Kukua,

impressed the jury with its project that uses low-cost

technologies to provide weather forecasts to farmers in sub-

Saharan Africa. Every year, half a billion farmers in Africa

suffer crop failures because of extreme weather conditions

such as floods and drought, which can result in famine and

the loss of 1.5 million tonnes of food every year. In providing

crucial weather data, Kukua helps farmers and communities

achieve food security.

RSM DISCOVERY RESEARCH VIDEOSIn addition to the traditional methods of disseminating new

knowledge, a growing number of our researchers have been

featured on WWW.RSM.NL/DISCOVERY, RSM’s online video

platform. These short films, made by RSM’s Corporate

Marketing and Communications team, make it easier for

businesses to get hold of, and understand, useful research

and its practical implications.

POWERFUL CULTURERSM attracts and collaborates with talented, motivated,

hard-working and entrepreneurial people: these are our

international students, faculty, staff, alumni and corporate

partners. They have a unifying commitment: to make

business and business education an instrument of positive

change. Collectively, they embody a powerful entrepreneurial

spirit that can generate ideas that add value to the world.

I WILL INITIATIVEThe I WILL initiative was created in 2009 to encapsulate

RSM’s unique community feeling and its purpose

of developing business leaders of the future. I WILL

encourages students to think ahead, about themselves and

about the world, and asks students to envision their future

by pinpointing what they want to achieve and by what

principles. In this way, I WILL portrays the ambitions and

intrinsic motivations of a community of individuals, each

identifying what they want to create now and in the future.

I WILL is interactive on several platforms and throughout

the campus with stylish I WILL photographic portraits and

statements from RSM’s students, faculty and staff on proud

display.

Goal setting was incorporated into the BSc student

curriculum after it became apparent that a lack of clear

goals and motivation are important causes of students

underachieving and dropping out. A multi-step online

goal-setting programme has been developed and tested.

It requires students to conceptualise, articulate and plan

their desired future, supported by mentors. One of the

end products of the programme is the formulation of

their desired future in the form of an I WILL statement.

Research among several groups of first-year RSM students

has shown this goal-setting exercise has a strong, positive

effect on student performance and retention rates. Every

student and employee at RSM is invited to have an I WILL

photographic portrait taken to accompany his or her I WILL

statement. Students’ portraits and I WILL statements travel

with them, through their studies and graduation at RSM,

and to the start of their careers and beyond. The I WILL

archive contains more than 10,000 statements, each one

expressing an ambition or desire for the future.

RSM ACADEMIC DEPARTMENTS

TECHNOLOGY AND OPERATIONS MANAGEMENTThe effective management of developing, producing and

delivering products and services is dealt with by RSM’s

Department of Technology and Operations Management.

Engaged scholars in the department develop scientific

knowledge and train students to become reflective practitioners

who can successfully manage and design supply chains,

information systems and innovation processes. In doing so,

they combine scientific ambition and rigour with practical

relevance in research and in teaching. This department is

24

equipped to address the three specialist disciplines of

supply chain management (SCM), business information

management (BIM), and innovation management (IM).

ORGANISATION AND PERSONNEL MANAGEMENTEvery part of business depends upon the relationship

between people and the organisation in which they work.

This department focuses on this relationship with an

interdisciplinary approach, and draws inspiration from

leadership, diversity and business cultures around the

world. New knowledge is created and disseminated through

prestigious international journals. The business impact

of this research translates into practical post-experience

programmes through RSM’s Executive Education department.

MARKETING MANAGEMENTProducing leading marketing research has put this

department among the top in Europe for the amount

and quality of its publications. Its focus is on marketing

management and strategy, marketing modelling, and the

faculty members, the department focuses on management

control and accounting, financial accounting and financial

analysis at a theoretical level through research, and through

practitioner orientation. The department’s stakeholders

range from academic researchers to the business

community of finance professionals, and its diverse

audience includes first-year BSc students, PhD researchers

and managers from business who take part in RSM’s

executive education programmes.

BUSINESS-SOCIETY MANAGEMENTRSM was the first European business school to have a

department for Business-Society Management. It offers

a humanistic perspective; focusing on ways business can

improve society and be a force for positive change that helps

people and organisations to thrive worldwide. This means

transforming fundamental assumptions and alternative

definitions of business on the subjects of climate change,

reputation, business ethics, philanthropy and partnerships.

New areas of research are translated directly into RSM’s

internationally oriented programmes, such as sustainability

in the MSc in Global Business & Sustainability, and into its

executive education programmes.

STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT AND ENTREPRENEURSHIPThis unique department uses an organisational theory

perspective in three main areas: strategic management,

strategic entrepreneurship, and global strategy.

The department serves 13 different educational programmes

at every level, and researches areas such as dynamic

RSM PARTNERS WITH AN

EVER-GROWING NUMBER OF

LOCAL AND MULTINATIONAL

ORGANISATIONS IN SEVERAL

WAYS:

ENGAGEMENTCORPORATE PARTNERING

EVENTSBy sponsoring or participating in RSM events, or by

providing speakers, organisations can enhance their

visibility within the RSM community. In doing so, partner

organisations come into contact with high-potential BSc,

MSc and MBA students, their student associations, as

well as RSM’s world-class faculty. These enhanced levels

of engagement open the way for student recruitment

opportunities, consultancy projects, study projects and

many other activities. In doing so, companies can improve

their status as preferred recruiters, get early access to top

RSM talent, and raise the profile of products or services

aimed at students and alumni. Participation in and

sponsorship of workshops, guest lectures and round-table

discussions not only provides contact with RSM students,

alumni, researchers and staff, but also offers networking

opportunities with peer organisations.

RESEARCHWhere possible, research is created in conjunction

with business. This presents a multitude of benefits for

participating organisations, including:

Sponsoring a research chair for an RSM thought leader

facilitates research for a particular field of business.

By supporting a Centre of Expertise, companies can

benefit from tailored research projects.

Establishing a co-operative knowledge platform enables

the development and sharing of first-class research,

knowledge, processes and business intelligence with

other international companies.

RSM’s world-class faculty and student base can be

commissioned to conduct applied research projects.

33

EDUCATION FOR EXECUTIVESCompanies can develop and boost their management

teams with RSM’s extensive portfolio of executive education

programmes, which includes part-time MBA programmes,

short open programmes and customised programmes.

Executives can improve their skills and value through

RSM’s portfolio of executive education programmes.

PARTNERSHIPS – INSPIRING STUDENTSPartnering with RSM’s top-level MSc Finance &

Investments Advanced (FI-A) programme gives access to

an exclusive group of world-class finance students who

have been carefully selected for their exceptional ability,

advanced knowledge and quantitative skills, as well as their

managerial and social skills.

Launched in September 2016 with six partners – Rabobank,

Deloitte, Unilever, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Oliver

Wyman and Achmea – the FI-A programme offers enhanced

career preparation, an internship, high-profile external

lecturers, extensive contact with corporate partner companies

and study trips through which students expand their industry

knowledge and networks, and gain valuable insights into the

career opportunities available at partner firms.

At Unilever Benelux headquarters, a group of 38 students

were given an overview of the company’s worldwide operations

and brands, as well as its internship and traineeship

opportunities. Unilever’s finance director of customer

development, Erik van Vliet, shared his personal career

journey, including his experience working for the company.

A visit by 20 students to Rabobank included presentations

about the company’s vision on the future of the workplace,

and the Chinese housing market bubble. Students were also

given a tour of Rabobank’s extensive art collection, took

part in an M&A case challenge, and given opportunities to

network with employees.

Managers at Achmea Insurance brand Interpolis welcomed

20 RSM students to the company with presentations on the

organisation, and the privatisation of the Dutch healthcare

system. The firm highlighted the career opportunities that

exist within Achmea, and later involved students in a case

challenge in which they worked in teams to focus on a

segment in the car insurance sector with the purpose of

enhancing the company’s profitability while addressing

ethical and reputation considerations.

‘These trips are inspiring and

an excellent chance to get a

feel for an organisation: to hear

their vision and get a sense of

the company’s culture. They

are also an opportunity for us to show them

what skills we have and to develop potentially

important contacts.’

ARIËN HAZELEGER, FI-A student.

‘What students should be

learning in business schools is

how an economic system – the

planet’s system – works, how

it should work, and how it can

be improved so that we can live here well, in

prosperity with many – maybe with all – now

and in the future. This is what business schools

need to teach students.’

FEIKE SIJBESMA, CEO, Royal DSM, and RSM alumnus

WITH AROUND 34,000 MEMBERS IN 110 COUNTRIES ACROSS THE WORLD, THE

ALUMNI NETWORK OF RSM IS A THRIVING, GROWING, AND LIVELY COMMUNITY

OF FORMER STUDENTS WHOSE DIVERSE MEMBERS REFLECT THE HISTORY

AND EVOLUTION OF RSM’S BUSINESS MANAGEMENT PROGRAMMES AND THE

COMMUNITY ITSELF.

NETWORKING & EVENTSThe alumni relations team manages, organises and facilitates

activities in which graduates connect with fellow alumni,

faculty members and representatives of corporate relations.

STAYING CONNECTEDThe alumni relations team manages the communication

channels (website, portal, online databases, newsletters,

and social media) used to stay in touch and engage with

alumni.

GIVING BACKIn addition to taking advantage of the many events and

lifelong learning opportunities presented by RSM, alumni

often want to contribute to the development of current

students, and to the success of recent graduates and the

school in general. There are several ways in which alumni

can “give back”: we can facilitate alumni wishing to take

part in voluntary activities such as student recruitment,

the provision of jobs and internships, financial donations,

coaching and mentoring, providing professional advice, and

giving guest lectures.

RSM MENTORMEA very concrete example of how alumni can effectively give

back and make an impact on students’ experiences is the

RSM MentorMe programme. We work successfully with

an online platform that facilitates connections between

students and alumni to provide career advice and one-to-one

mentoring. Through this platform, students can search for

experienced alumni – based on criteria including industry,

functional area and nationality – who can give them

career advice, CV guidance and conduct mock interviews.

Students from all of RSM’s programmes can take advantage

of this platform and alumni can sign up to be a mentor.

Additionally, four MSc programmes have incorporated

mentoring into their curricula. In 2016, 417 mentee-mentor

consultations were completed.

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARDSIn 2009, RSM began a tradition of honouring its most

distinguished alumni with a special award. This is

She was one of eight co-authors of the book Impact With Wings: Stories to Inspire and Mobilize Women Angels and Entrepreneurs, which encourages women angel investors to

fund more women-led start-ups.

Roos de Wit-Goedhart (Executive

MBA, 2009; MScBA Business

Society Management, 2003 and

Bedrijfswetenschappen doctoraal BSM,

2003) won the award for Entrepreneurial

Spirit. Roos started her company, Study

Tours, in 2012. The company designs, organises and delivers

tailor-made and high-quality study tours for participants from

universities around the world. Her great ambition, knowledge

and networking skills have enabled her to break standard

thinking patterns and silos, and she is a great example of

female entrepreneurship. Roos also co-founded Female

Ventures, a start-up that supports women in founding their

own business.

Debby van der Schuit (MSc International

Management/CEMS, 2010) won the award

in the category Social Impact. Debby has

pushed the boundaries of the healthcare

industry – and politics – to advocate for

brothers and sisters taking care of siblings

with a disability; an important yet underestimated role. She

used her managerial and business mindset to produce a

personal documentary Op zoek naar mijn zusje (In search of

my sister) with which she hopes to achieve a custom working

method that includes brothers and sisters in a sibling’s care

plan. Her work has addressed a business and societal need.

Debby’s care responsibilities, persuasiveness and business

skills turned into a project for political change for thousands

of families in the Netherlands.

INTERNATIONALPARTNER SCHOOLSBUSINESS TAKES PLACE IN AN INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENT.

SO DOES AN EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE AT RSM.

INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENTIn addition to working and studying with an international

cohort, RSM students can take part in study exchanges

with other leading business schools around the world.

RSM’s international partner schools share the responsibility

for upholding the highest levels of academic excellence

regionally and globally, and each strives to teach the value

of international co-operation to its students. Many partner

schools are academic members of the Global Alliance in

Management Education (CEMS), the Global Executive

OneMBA consortium, and the Partnership in International

Management (PIM). Others are bilateral partner schools of

one of RSM’s BSc, MSc and MBA exchange programmes.

CEMSCEMS is a strategic alliance of leading business schools

and multinational companies. The MSc in International

Management/CEMS programme aims to develop high

quality graduates with a global mindset in preparation

for an international career in business. The partnership

with this alliance gives RSM prime access to this group of

outstanding students.

ONEMBAThe prestigious 21-month Global Executive OneMBA

programme is a unique executive MBA designed by

an equal partnership of RSM and four other premier

business schools located in Asia, North America and

South America. OneMBA participants are experienced

mid-career managers who live and work around the globe.

They have the opportunity to experience business through

the lens of the world’s most important economic regions,

making this programme unparalleled in its development

of knowledge, leadership abilities, global networks and

experience of international business.

PIMPIM facilitates the development of international co-

operation among its members, fostering the development

of joint research projects and educational programmes,

and student and faculty exchanges. PIM’s member

institutions represent the highest degree of excellence in

the fields of business administration and management,

and demonstrate leadership in their geographic region.

ACERSM is part of the Alliance of Chinese and European

business schools, which is under EFMD (European

Federation of Management Development) patronage.

Founding members include 10 business schools from Europe

and 10 from China. ACE focuses on academic excellence

and the synergy between research and education in order to

better prepare the next generation of executives. Activities

include the development of joint programmes under the

ACE label, exchanges of faculty members and students,

projects and research conferences, and the development of

international skills modules.
