Dear Parent/Guardian, Safe Routes to Schools is holding the Pollution Solution 2015: Golden Sneaker Contest at your School. The contest encourages you and your child/ren to reduce car trips by using active and shared transportation. Active transportation includes: walking, biking, skateboarding or using a scooter. Shared transportation includes: riding the school bus, using public transportation or carpooling (sharing your ride with people from another household). Your child’s class will be participating in the contest. Over the course of the next 2 weeks, your child and his/her classmates will be keeping track of their active and shared transportation to and from school each day. One point will be given for each active or shared trip travelled to and from school. At the end of the two weeks the class with the most points will be awarded the Golden Sneaker Award and will celebrate their efforts with a party. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Jennifer Chaves ([email protected]) or Nicole Hunter-Maes ([email protected]). We encourage you to work with your child to participate in this contest. Have fun walking, rolling and sharing your ride! Good luck! Sincerely, Jennifer and Nicole SR2S Co-Champions Safe Routes to School, Alameda County

¡Buena suerte! Sinceramente, Jennifer and Nicole Parent Coordinators Rutas Seguras a las Escuelas, Condado de Alameda

*******Class Descriptions*******

Animal Lover’s: This class is for the true animal lover! Have you ever heard of “Yakow”? It’s a combination of a “Yak” and a “Cow” and lives in Tibet. You will learn about different types of animals plus create “animal art” like origami and clay figures! We’ll have fun snacks plus “Live Animal Guests!” Taught by Mrs. Campi! Grades K-3, Limit 16 Ceramic Arts: Roosevelt Welcomes back “Aran’s Art Studio” from Castro Valley, an exciting addition to the ACE Program. Projects will include: Clay, Tiles and Glass Fusing. Class fees include all materials and all projects will be glazed and fired at the studio. Just imagine how much Mom, Dad, Grandparents or any loved one will truly enjoy hand crafted pieces of art. Grades 2-5, Limit 12 Cooking: Look out Food Network! Come cook with Chef Campi in our ACE room kitchen. You will become more confident in the kitchen as you discover it really isn’t as hard as it looks. Maybe you’ll even get brave enough to cook dinner some night at home! You will learn how to measure, work different appliances, and prepare a wide variety of cuisine, from amazing sweets to savory entrees! Yummy! Grades 2-5, Limit 12 per class. Go Green: Develop your green thumb in the school garden! Learn about gardening, composting, and create art using recycled materials. Students in this class will participate in a variety of fun, hands-on activities that will teach and reinforce knowledge and skills related to planting, growing and caring for the garden. Class will be taught by wonderful Roosevelt parents, Pauline Guilbert and Pete Murakami. Grades 1-5, Limit 12 Junior Acers: This multi-topic ACE class targets Kinders and 1st Grade students. We will alternate weeks with age appropriate cooking, art, K’NEX and science projects. This is a great introduction to the ACE program! Mrs. Campi will provide students with variety while ensuring the young ones learn to work and create in a group setting while being comfortable with children their own age. Grades K-1, Limit 12 Just Desserts: Bring your “Sweet Tooth” to this fun new class, taught by Mrs. Campi. We will make all types of yummy creations such as cookies, brownies, crepes, toffee, and even “ice cream in a bag”! Prepare to get sticky and bring your creative dessert ideas to class! Grades 2-5, Limit 12 K’NEX: Boys and girls of all ages have great fun in this club! Learn to create incredible machines, vehicles, creatures and anything else you can imagine. Race your vehicles down the race track. Using the K’NEX system of rods and connectors, you can design machines with the use of gears, pulleys, wheels, and levers. Grades K-5, Limit 16 Knitting: We are excited to have Roosevelt’s beloved noon supervisor Mrs. Smith, a “Knitting Guru”, teach this amazing club. Learn the basics of knitting to make simple projects, such as a scarf, potholder, belt, etc. This class is for boys or girls and once you learn to knit, it’s like riding a bike, you never forget! Advanced knitting kids will go on to learn crochet! Grades 2-5, Limit 12 Pet Party: Express your creativity in this pet-inspired mixed media class. We’ll create pet-themed art - dogs, cats, fish, and pets from our imaginations - to learn about the pop art movement. We’ll use mediums such as paint, pastels, collage and more to help us understand the art of 20th century modern artists like Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Keith Haring and Marisol. We’ll focus on self-expression, effort, process, and creativity. Come join the party! This class will be taught by the talented Roosevelt parent Sandra Petrequin. Grades 1-3, Limit 12. Playground Sports: Spring is in the air and there is no better time to be outside for an ACE club! Come join Mrs. Campi for traditional playground games/sports like 4 Square, Tetherball, Jump Roping, and much more! We will also have “Surprise Guest Coaches” to lead a team sport such as Basketball, Football, Track, Volleyball, Soccer and Kickball, just to name a few. Come join the fun and improve your athletic skills at the same time! Have an idea for a great game or sport? Bring it to class! Grades 2-5, Limit 16

Attention Roosevelt Families: Save the Date and get ready for an AWESOME night out for the best cause – our kids! This year’s auction extravaganza will be an ISLAND PARADISE filed with great times! There will be fun and useful items for every budget, not to mention tasty food, drinks and music! We hope everyone will be able to come, but even if you can’t make the event: WE NEED YOUR HELP! Donations that come from Roosevelt parents and their extended network of friends, family, and work associates are some of the most outstanding and popular items at the auction. So here are a couple of simple ways YOU CAN PARTICIPATE:

! Donate an auction item. You may not think you have something “auction worthy”, be we bet you do! Perhaps you have a special skill (computers, rock climbing, graphic designs?), a vacation property, sporting event tickets, theater tickets, fine art, or handmade items? Maybe you like to bake or cook, plan parties, teach tennis, hula or scrapbook? All of these (and much more) can become a HUGE successful auction item or Pay-to-Play. If you’re considering something, or what to ask questions, need help or suggestions, just let us know.

! Take a moment to ask your employer or your favorite local business

for an auction donation. This could include a gift certificate, a facility tour, a lesson/class, sporting event or performance tickets, gift baskets, etc.

It really is the simple things that you can do that help make this event successful. Thank you all for any help you can provide. Your participation is really what makes our school and our children succeed. Keep an eye out for ticker information and more details soon. We hope to see you at the auction! Dear Friend of Roosevelt Elementary School, The hard-working staff and families at Roosevelt continue to find creative ways of keeping the school a vibrant and safe environment for learning and achievement. The Roosevelt Spring Auction is a fantastically fun, community-based event with an ever-growing attendance and lots of local support. This year our theme will be Roosevelt Island Paradise . Any donation of gift certificates or Auction items that you can provide will go a long way toward providing much-needed supplies to our children and improvements to our school. And of course it promotes your company as a community-minded business to an audience of local leaders, business owners, parents and other involved community members! All donations will receive: ! Full recognition in the auction catalog ! Eye-catching display on auction bid boards We are also pleased to display any brochures or other marketing information along with your donation if provided.
