Raptor Eye View

RA : Glendale let Olympic back in the match in the second half. What’s to be done to see that does not recur?

ZF : We definitely got complacent toward the end of the game after we ran in a few scores. It overall was not a strong performance from our side and we have to work on sticking to our pattern and upping our tempo;

RA : Well, we’re midway through the season and Glendale is top of the charts and, regardless of this weekend’s results, wil l remain there. Is this where you expected to be at this stage?

ZF : We knew we had a solid team coming into this season. Lots of people were writ ing us off in the beginning, but we knew if we were able to stick to our pattern and to continue to develop as a team we would be competit ive. To be at the top right now is great, but al l that matters is being at the top at the end of the season, so that’s where our sights are;

RA : With other clubs in the league looking to take their shot at f irst-placed Raptors, anything different in the way you (col lect ively) approach kickoff? Wil l there be, or has there been, a team mindset adjustment?

ZF : The important thing is never get too comfortable with where we are. At the beginning of the year, we were playing (as if we had) something to prove; now things have changed a bit. We just need to keep getting better each day and approaching each game like we have… with a must- win mental ity. It ’s easy for teams (in our posit ion) to want to coast now, but with the competit ive nature of this league, no lead is safe, so we need to continue to work to build our team and f inish this second half of the season strong;

RA : Last week, Barbarians had a tough time scoring on Belmont, this weekend’s opponent. Do you see this as an issue for Raptors, who have the most productive offense in the Premiership, come Saturday?

ZF : Belmont is a very physical side with a tough defense. Our offense has been doing a great job putting points on the board this year, but what we really need to focus in on is our defense. We haven’t played a full 80 on defense and against a strong team like Belmont that could hurt us in the end. The last t ime we played them we’d a lead and let them back in the game. Scoring points is great, but it ’s even more important that we are keeping our opponents from getting points;

RA : How’s overal l team health? Anyone on the roster from last week unable to work on Saturday?

ZF : Everyone is holding up strong. A couple of bumps and bruises here and there, but that is to be expected in a long, competit ive season l ike this

Denver Harlequins did the business on the road against Northern Colorado Flamingos, 26-

19, and picked up the bonus-point for 4 (or more) groundings in the bargain. NorCo did

earn a bonus-point for loss at 7-or-less. Quins’re now within f irm handshake distance of

Highlanders, whom they lost to in an away f ixture in the fall at The Jake; but they’ l l be

looking to return their Denver rival’s hospitality on April 12t h in Cook Rugby Park’s Cooker,

the Jester’s homegrounds, in the men’s D-2 Battle for Denver Round II .

Park City Haggis, tasty as ever, comes to town Saturday-the-upcomer for a fancy meal down

in the Springs with the Grizzl ies men’s club, and the Utahans may very well rol l out of state

with a f iver in their pocket. Also Glendale Raptors D-2 men host Northern Colorado

Flamingos in league action at the StoveTop on Saturday. Those hunters’l l be looking for f ive

from this to keep pace, and possibly overtake, their pals from Utah’s Rocky Mountains;

though Haggis has a game in hand Glendale, whom they’ l l play f irst Saturday in April .

Men - 2014 - Ireland

11, 52 at Stadio Olimpico: Well, visitors got the bunch they needed, but the f inal

6Nats numbers (cumulative points differential) were insufficient to claim the tit le;

51, 3 at Millenium Stadium: This very well could have been the most enjoyable

match of the day, but only for those Fr iends of Dragon; Coach Johnson got kicked upstairs

and is now Scotland’s Director of Rugby; whether that posit ion is closer to egress or further

away shall be revealed in t ime;

20, 22 at Stade de France: Ireland for the 6Nats championship; Men in Green

closed their 6Nats campaign in dramatic fashion and may very well be the form European

national men’s side just now, what with the small , though stunningly impressive, loss to Al l

Blacks at the end of 2013, and the bleep v England at Twickenham, Ireland are surging; and

Jon Sexton has well-assumed the O’Gara mantle, it may not be Ireland Forever, but it ’ l l

certainly be Eire for a while;

Women - 2014 - France

France victory over Ireland , 19-15, at Stade de Hameau secured the crown for Les Bleus as

well as the Grand Slam; the f ive-point lead the hosts held at the half was enough to provide

for the win after a concerted, second stanza effort from Ireland brought Fiona Coghlan’s

team to the brink of championship;

RE: 2014 Women’s Rugby World Cup : Ireland is in the pool-of-four with United States, New

Zealand (current WRWC tit le-holders) and Kazakhastan;

United States Women’s Eagles were best in the world at Cardiff , Wales in the inaugural

Women’s Rugby World Cup (WRWC) a bit more than a score of years past at the onset of

the 1990s; Eagles topped England for the global championship, 19-6, and went on to f inish

out the end of the millenium with second place closes in ’95 and ’99 - goin’ for 1s t in 2014,

13 players at the death for the visitors and a 60-point total split just unevenly as the Men of Australia’s West outlasted their hosts, 31-29, in Dunedin; Highlanders #10, Lima Sopoaga, got the forever str ike from midfield for three and a total account of 14 on four penalties and one conversion; Western Force touched down a quartet of scores in their bonus-point win;

24 for Lions-hearted #10, Marnitz Boshoff, on 4 penalties, 3 conversions and 2 dropped goals at El l is Park - the last penalty struck to break a 36-all knot at ’78 which then required defensive heroics by the Big Cats to preserve victory; 17-nil with travel ing Blues frustrated in the f irst forty; 5 trys by the Kiwis in the second stanza just fal l ing short, 36-39; 2 points, however, for Blues on loss-at-seven-or- less and 4+ dots;

Bayonne (43) v Bordeaux Begles (50) at Stade Jean Dauger: playoff implications? oui ;

Clermont Auvergne (60) v Toulon (60) at Stade Marcel Michel in: for f irst place, yet

surely home team’s recent malaise- l ike efforts must ebb? non ;

the hil ls;

Oyonnax (39) v Montpell ier (53) at Stade Charles Mathon: home side has been on the

RaboDirect PRO12

Leinster st i l l fronting the pack, but it ’s a true pack with three-of-four Irish provinces in

glad-hands distance of one another uptop now that Ulster has made up its Valentine’s Day

washout date with Scarlets ; and they did it in f ive-point style at Ravenhi l l on Fr iday night,

doubling their visitors card, 26-13, with scrumhalf Ruan Pienaar good on three trys-

converted while his pivot, Paddy Jackson, dotted a brace; Scarlets inside center, Olly

Barkley, knocked 13 points through the sticks on three penalt ies and two conversions, the

last three-pointer drew the visitors within three, 21-18 in the 62n d minute, before a try by

replacement prop, Tom Court, meant the extra credit for Ulster at ‘80+

Friday, 3.21: Ospreys (46) v Cardiff Blues (24) at Liberty Stadium: home team should l ike f ive; Leinster (59) v Zebre (18) at Royal Dublin Society: f ive for homeys? Edinburgh (28) v Ulster (55) at Murrayfield: probably too much to ask of the host as their guests have not lost a match in 2014; Saturday, 3.22: Glasgow (43) v Scarlets (36) at Scotstoun: this one looks a lot tougher for homeboys than it did coupla weeks back; Munster (58) v Benetton Treviso (20) at Ravenhil l : Ravenhil l just the vehicle to excise last fortnight’s angster? Sunday, 3.23: Dragons (28) v Connacht (27) at Rodney Parade: tricky, yet doable, for DM’s crew;
