Principal’s Message

This half term has been very productive. As the pupils all begin to get ready for their next year, we are seeing huge steps being taken in their learning. The topics this term (‘Green Fingers’ in Year 1 and ‘Bugs’ in Reception) have been very popular and it has been great to see herbs being grown, and bug hotels being designed and constructed with the help of local Architects.

Each week we continue with our Celebration Assemblies where it has been fantastic to see pupils now being rewarded with their silver badges as well as bronze. The ‘word of the week’ assemblies have also been important to highlight good communication, thoughtfulness, adaptability, enquiry, resilience and respect in all our learning approaches.

I hope you all have a good Half Term Break and look forward to seeing you all on Monday 5th June .

Our Curriculum

Year 1 have had a lot of fun with their ’Green Gingers’ topic. They have been learning all about edible plants and where different food comes from. They enjoyed making their own fruit kebabs and planting cress seeds.

Reception have been busy learning about bugs and started off the term by going on a bug hunt around the Olympic Park.

The local Eco Active team worked with us exploring mini beasts and the compost cycle. Our pupils learnt that mini beasts break down our food to make compost. They observed and held mini beasts and also set up a composting experiment comparing the ability of worms to break down plastic vs food waste.

Reception Pupils also worked with Jan Kattein Architects to build Bug Hotels which they have designed and created for our EYFS area and the Clarnico Quay site which is being developed on the bank of Lee Navigation.

IPC Exit Assemblies These events are a great success and continue from strength to strength. One of our Governors, Claire Hutchinson, was able to attend RM’s and said ‘It was great to see all the children so engaged at the assembly and lots of parents there to support. I took away a real sense of cohesion, happiness and really rounded learning amongst the children. Mrs Wood and the team are doing a fantastic job and you can see that the children are thriving. ‘

‘Plants need water,

soil and lots of sun

to help them

grow.’ - Miles

‘We made bug hotels for lady birds and butterflies and all the bugs so they can rest and eat. The

butterfly ones have ribbon so they can fly in and they won’t cut their wings on the metal’ - Milla

‘We learnt that fruit

is grown on different

trees and tasted

different fruits they

were all yummy and

healthy.’ - Gabriela

‘Bugs eat grass and spiders eat insects . You can’t stamp on them or squash them, you can

build them a bug castle so they can live in there.‘ - Rhieco

Tennis at Lee Valley Tennis Centre

Year 1 have had two sessions at the Lee Valley Tennis Centre. They had a coach for their first session who introduced them to the basics of tennis. They then practiced these skills in their weekly PE lessons and were able to return to the courts to show off what they had learnt.

‘We got to play real tennis. We were hitting it to each other and we had to run to hit it back.’ - Atalia Transitions We are already looking forward to welcoming our new cohort of Reception pupils in September. To help settle new and current pupils in to their new classes we will be holding a settling in week from Monday 3rd July to Friday 7th July. During this week all children will get a chance to spend time with their new teacher and familiarise themselves with their new classrooms. MRPA Upcoming events: Preparations for the summer fete on Saturday 24th June 11am—1pm are well under way. There is going to be plenty of fun and exciting activities including a bouncy castle, face painting, sports games, hair braiding as well as a variety of international foods and a bake sale. The Fathers Day Read is taking place on Monday 19th June at 3pm. Lunch Time Helpers We have some very eager helpers at MRA who do a fantastic job helping their friends clear away their lunch, and keeping our lunch hall a tidy place to dine. Each week a different helper from each class is announced in assembly. The children are very proud to wear the ‘Mossbourne Riverside Academy Lunch Time Helper’ aprons!
