Important Update
First, we would like to share with you the Prince
William County School Regulation 929-1, Visitor
Identification. To comply with this regulation, we
ask you to please show a government issued
identification each time you visit or pick up your
student(s). River Oaks Elementary now has a
new video intercom system issued to us by
PWCS Risk Management. The intercom system
has a camera built in that activates itself when
the buzzer is pressed to alert the front office
staff that there is a visitor at the door. All visitors
will have to buzz in through the main door and
show a government identification through the
camera in order to enter the building. If you do
not have identification, we will not be able to
allow access inside the building. All main doors
will remain locked and secured during the school
day. We understand that emergencies occur.
Please call the main off at 703-441.0050 and we
will assist you.
¡Importante!

Principal’s Behavior Award
Congratulations to our 1st Grade Students for their
excellent behavior during the month of December.
Car Rider Line
Every minute of instruction counts! The school
building is open to students each morning at 8:32
AM. If you are using the convenient Car Rider Line,
please make sure that you drop your child off before
8:50 AM in the morning. Our staff will be returning
inside as soon as the 8:50 AM bell rings so they can
begin instruction on time. Students need to be inside
by 8:50 AM or they will be marked tardy.
Update Your Information It is very important that we have current phone
numbers for all our students in case of an
emergency. Please call the school (or the clinic) if
you have recently changed your home, work, or cell
phone number so we can add that information to
your child's Emergency Card. We also suggest you
add our school phone number
(703-441-0050) to your telephone contact list.

World Language in the Elementary School by Senora Lucas
Wednesday, January 18, from 6:00-7:00 PM in room 602
(Science Lab), River Oaks Elementary School will hold a WLES
Information Night. In the event of inclement weather, the
WLES night will be held Tuesday, January 24, from
6:00-7:00 PM, in room 602 (Science Lab).
WLES stands for World Language in the Elementary Schools.
River Oaks Elementary School is a Spanish Language School.
The program model, called content-related world languages
instruction, is a research-based model that focuses on the
reinforcement and integration of the key academic concepts
included in the Standards of Learning for social studies, math,
science, and language arts as is possible and linguistically
appropriate in French or Spanish.
All students will develop communication skills in the target
language and a much deeper understanding of the many
cultures represented by the Spanish language. The five goals
of the National and State Foreign Language Standards are:
Communication, Cultures, Comparisons, Connections, and
Communities which are the foundation of the program
instruction integrated into the cross-disciplinary curriculum.
Transfers will be accepted only for kindergarten students
and current kindergarten students entering first grade in
September 2017. Acceptance will be based on a space
available basis.
I am proud to announce that River Oaks Elementary
has been selected again this
2016-2017 school year for a Stem Family Science
Night event. The event sponsored by the Children’s
Science Center will take place at our school the
evening of March 9, 2017. Families will have the
opportunity to engage in hands-on STEM (science,
technology, engineering, and mathematics)
activities. If you have any questions or would like
to volunteer, please contact fifth grade teacher and
science lead Latosha Thompson at
Family Science Night
Nurse’s Notes by Kathy Cobb, RN A measure passed by the Virginia General Assembly
in July 2006, means that all rising 6th grade students
will need to get a tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis
(Tdap) booster shot prior to the start of school in
September 2015, unless fewer than five years have
passed since their last Tdap immunization. All
Prince William County Public School students must
meet all Virginia immunization requirements.
Once your child turns 11 years old, they need to get
this immunization. Please send the documentation of
this vaccine to the school nurse, Mrs. Cobb. She will
notify your child’s middle school that they have
received their vaccine.

Local Bibb Lettuce
Did you know that Prince William County Schools’
cafeterias serve locally grown Bibb lettuce? It is grown
hydroponically at Portwood Gardens Farm in Dayton,
Virginia, and is harvested over the weekend and in our
schools by Tuesday! Hydroponics is a growing method
without soil that uses water and mineral solutions.
Hydroponic growing promotes a clean growing
environment.
Bibb lettuce is also known as butterhead or Boston lettuce.
The leaves are crisp, yet tender, and have a rich, buttery
flavor. It is a more nutrient-dense lettuce variety than
iceberg, and has folate, fiber and vitamins A, C and K.
School Food Services uses Bibb lettuce in our tossed salad,
which can be the base for our “Make Your Own” (MYO)
salad lunch choice!

Book Fair To everyone who came to our Book Fair, and to all
who helped make it a great experience, a big
THANK YOU! With the help of our fabulous parent
volunteer, Mr. Vasquez, and the support of
everyone who attended.
We will be able to enhance the River Oaks library
collection by providing a selection of current high
interest fiction and non-fiction titles. It is important
to provide our students with access to a wide range
of current literature and informational text in order
to encourage a continued interest in reading. A love
of reading begins at home. Encourage your children
to read and provide a good example as they see
YOU read. We’ll see you at our next Book Fair!
PTCC News Please join us for our next meeting on Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at 4:00 PM, as we plan our events for the rest of the school year. Please visit our PTCC web page at [email protected] for future events and volunteer opportunities.
