History Allen Hager founded Right at Home after spending nearly a decade in hospital administration. While in the hospital environment, he watched many patients – especially seniors – leave the facility and return home, but not necessarily return to health. Once home, many of his former patients were unable to care for themselves. Allen knew that with a little help, most of these people could lead healthy, happy lives in the comfort of their own homes.

Before he considered opening an in-home care business, he talked to dozens of families to understand the different kinds of challenges they faced and what kind of care would be most helpful. He also became a Certified Nursing Assistant to experience first-hand the needs of people who were still living in their home but who needed professional assistance.

In 1995, Allen started the first Right at Home in Omaha, Nebraska. Five years later, he started branching into other regions of the country by carefully selecting franchisees who shared his passion for caring for those in their community.

Why Right at HomeA Home Care Company Developed and Managed for The Long Term Right at Home is a home care company first and foremost, founded and managed by people who have made their careers in home care and health care. We’re not a big franchise company that followed others into this popular industry. Franchising is simply a business strategy we utilize to grow the Right at Home brand.

Allen Hager worked to comprehend every element of the home care industry before starting Right at Home. He made sure his business model was honed and sustainable before trying to expand it. As he began to franchise, Allen also assembled a management team with rich home care and health care experience. This provided a stable foundation for the franchise. It also nurtured its growth into the international organization it has become.

Why Us – The Business Case• Favorable Demographics and Trends – An aging population, shorter hospital stays and a preference for aging at home are fueling the demand for in-home senior services.

• Technology Resistant – Care can’t be provided by the Internet and it can’t be outsourced overseas. Technology certainly plays a role in our business, but care has to be provided by compassionate caregivers.

• Repeat Business – Clients don’t typically hire us for just one day. They hire us to fulfill a family need on an ongoing basis. The case may only last a few weeks or it may last for years. Each client represents a recurring revenue stream.

• No Retail Location or Inventory – Right at Home franchisees operate out of small, affordable, professional offices. Our main product is care, so there’s no costly inventory that can eventually become obsolete.

• Flexibility to Add NURSING Care – The choice to add nursing services to your business is yours, as is the timing of this decision. There is no requirement to add these services. If you choose to offer nursing services, you can do so on your own schedule when you feel you and your business are ready.

• A Winning Culture – When you speak with our management team and our franchisees, you’ll see firsthand the winning culture that all of us enjoy at Right at Home. We encourage franchisee involvement at every level because we know when we work together, we can be an even stronger force in the marketplace.

• Comparably Small Investment - Entrepreneur Magazine has rated Right at Home as a Top Low-Cost Franchise Opportunity four times, and was named the #1 Best Lost Investment Franchise by Forbes Magazine two times.

Why Right at HomeOwner Benefits Unlike many franchise opportunities, senior care offers benefits well beyond the possibility of monetary growth. This isn’t just an investment in a business; it’s also an investment in your community and your personal fulfillment. A little assistance really does go a long way.

You provide better living. When you leave your office at the end of the day, you haven’t just made a dollar; you’ve made someone’s day. Senior care is a necessary service that helps an aging population remain independent in comfortable surroundings. Your care – and the resulting independence – is often the difference between someone feeling happiness rather than helplessness.

You provide stability and affordability.Family relationships are fragile. When something changes, it can often upset the balance of the entire unit, emotionally and financially. Your presence and services can make a difficult situation easier for the entire family at an affordable cost.

You provide fulfilling employment. Most franchises create jobs; you create meaningful jobs. You’re not just helping your employees put food on the table; you’re providing a sense of accomplishment to those who are able to enrich the lives of others. With Right at Home’s proven track record, you’re also putting money into your community so that it can grow and thrive.

National Parkinson Foundation

Right at Home and the National Parkinson’s Foundation (NPF) share a common mission: to improve the quality of care, and quality of life, for those we serve. Because of this mission, Right at Home is proud to be a National Hope Partner in the fight against Parkinson’s disease.

How Do We Partner? One of the featured events in the fight against Parkinson’s is the NPF Moving Day events. Moving Day is the name given to local events held around the country that are dedicated to raising funds and awareness for those who live with Parkinson’s disease. The two organizations are united in sharing valuable knowledge with patients and their families and to address the needs of the 1 million Americans living with the disease in the United States.

Free Wheelchair Mission

In some parts of the world, when you cannot walk, you must wait for someone to carry you. Or you crawl to get around. In developing countries, an estimated 70 million people are disabled and have no access to a wheelchair. Through Right at Home’s partnership with the humanitarian nonprofit Free Wheelchair Mission, these in-need individuals are receiving a life-changing gift — a wheelchair at no cost.

How Do We Partner?Right at Home franchisees at the local and international level are joining with Free Wheelchair Mission to raise funds to provide free, adjustable wheelchairs that can withstand the harsh terrain in the developing world. Right at Home volunteers are working with on-site teams country after country to assemble and give deliver hundreds of wheelchairs on each mission trip.

RightTeam

With 10,000 seniors per day turning 65 from 2011 - 2029, the demand for caregiving services continues to grow. As the need for in-home care services grows, so does the need for recruiting and retaining quality caregivers. In 2017, Right at Home created the RightTeam to set the strategy and roadmap to help our franchisees deliver the best employee experience possible, and become the employer of choice.

Why Right at Home

Collaboration

It wasn’t all that long ago that owners of private-duty home care companies had to spend significant time and resources educating potential referral sources and consumers about how companionship and personal care services could positively impact families. Now, in-home care has become a much more recognized and integrated part of the overall healthcare system because of our ability to reduce hospital readmissions, lower costs and provide a superior customer experience to clients and families in their homes.

It’s clear that more and more care is moving into the homes of our seniors. As policymakers implement changes to bend the cost curve down and increase healthcare accountability, and senior services providers react to those changes, Right at Home is well-positioned as a collaborative strategic partner in the market.

Harvard Medical School

Right at Home worked with researchers from Harvard Medical School and software provider ClearCare to improve at-home senior healthcare by testing a new intervention strategy only with Right at Home’s 400 locations. This was the first large-scale study that examined how the private-pay home care population utilizes home care.

Goals of the Partnership:• Implement a systemic process for observing, reporting and monitoring changes in condition of our clients.

• Prevent avoidable hospitalizations.

• Improve health outcomes.

• Lower healthcare costs.

Medicare Advantage

Validation of the value of private-duty home care can be found in the April 2018 announcement that the CMS will allow Medicare Advantage plans to pay for nonskilled in-home care services as a supplemental benefit to their insureds beginning in 2019. This is the first time that the CMS has allowed supplemental benefits that include daily maintenance in Medicare Advantage plans, and it signals that policymakers are willing to look at creative solutions to provide more affordable care for our aging population. The full impact of the CMS decision won’t be known until 2019 as the implementation details are worked out. Regardless of those details, Right at Home’s presence in 46 of the 50 states is a strong foundation to begin collaborating with Medicare Advantage plan providers to find solutions for their clients.

Kindred Healthcare

Another example of our collaborative mindset is our partnership with Kindred at Home, the largest provider of home health services in the U.S.* Right at Home and Kindred at Home will work together through a preferred partnership with a focus on collaborative care. Each industry leader shares the common goals of keeping seniors happy and healthy and allowing them to age in their homes. With similar footprints across the nation, when clients are in need of home health services and are equally eligible, we have identified Kindred at Home as a national collaboration partner in care. In return, Kindred at Home has identified us as a partner of choice, focused on decreasing hospital readmissions and improving the overall quality of healthcare outcomes. Under this new partnership, Right at Home and Kindred at Home will work diligently on a local and national level to find areas of collaboration and opportunities to serve the elderly population. As David Causby, President and CEO of Kindred at Home, said, “Kindred at Home is excited to partner with Right at Home to provide compassionate, patient-focused home care assistance to all who need it. Our hope is that we can utilize the new Medicare Advantage opportunity to help our patients stay where they want to be — their homes.”

Other National Accounts and Strategic AlliancesLet us help you take your business to the next level through our national and regional strategic partnerships. Right at Home already has agreements in place with many of the industry’s largest referral partners and providers. Dealing with a handful of large brands makes life easier for senior services providers because they can deal directly with one corporate office instead of making arrangements individually with thousands of individual in-home care providers. The benefit to the Right at Home system is that all Right at Home franchisees have access to these strategic partnerships at no additional cost. We’ve grouped the revenue opportunities for franchisees into three categories, as described at right.

Network Participation

• EAPs: There are over 100 million adults in today’s workforce. Employee benefits are offered to improve productivity, job satisfaction and work/life balance. As our senior population begins to outnumber our youth, employers are moving from providing day care benefits to “adult care” benefits to help their employees take care of their parent or a loved one. Right at Home has developed partnerships with companies that have EAPs, which refer employees to Right at Home to provide these valuable services.

• Long-Term Care: About 7.2 million Americans own a long-term care policy. Right at Home ensures our franchisees have the opportunity to be part of these valuable provider networks, allowing the client and the family access to quality, credentialed providers. Partnerships with some of the largest LTC industry providers drive long-term care referrals directly to our Right at Home franchisees.

• Workers’ Comp: In 2014, state and federal workers’ compensation laws covered about 129.6 million employees. Covered payroll in 2014—that is, total wages paid to covered workers—was $6.8 trillion. Employers and payers want a network of providers that will provide consistent, quality service for their work comp cases. Right at Home has developed partnerships with several of these networks. We ensure our franchisees have the opportunity to be a part of these large networks, which generate referrals across the country.

Healthcare Collaboration

• Senior Communities: Millions of Americans reside in senior communities such as ALFs, ILFs and CCRCs across the United States. The majority of senior communities don’t have the resources to support the growing demand for home care services. Our partnerships with these communities are valuable to them because our services allow their residents to remain in their homes as long as possible. Right at Home is able to care for our clients.

• Home Health: Right at Home recognizes that we simply can’t do it alone. Seniors with multiple chronic conditions require a broader approach to care. Therefore, we have collaborated with some of the largest and most prestigious home healthcare providers in the United States to deliver on our promise to improve the quality of life for those we serve. When we don’t have the skilled resources on staff to keep our patients healthy, we lean on partnerships such as Kindred at Home (see above). We see home health companies as not only a referral source, but also a resource to help us raise quality standards and keep our clients in the home longer.

• Hospitals: Hospitals are being held increasingly more accountable for the reduction of readmissions. As a matter of fact, in 2017, over 2,500 hospitals faced readmission penalties. Years ago, Right at Home recognized the impact home care services could have on keeping patients safe in their home and out of the hospital. In turn, we’ve developed a variety of partnerships and programs such as RightTransitions and our change-in- condition study conducted with Harvard Medical School.

Government Funding

• Medicare Advantage (MA): After the surprise announcement by the CMS in April 2018 (see above), Right at Home quickly invested in the resources and infrastructure to help franchisees navigate this new landscape. This important change in direction for the CMS is great validation for the value of in-home care. Our goal is simple: When payers are ready, we will be top of mind as the experts … as the educators … as a reputable, quality provider.

• Veterans Care Coordination (VCC): There are over 20 million veterans in the United States and numerous government-funded programs available to support them as they age. One in particular is the Federal Aid and Attendance benefit. A veteran or the veteran’s surviving spouse may be eligible for more than $26,000 a year. The unfortunate part is, most veterans are unaware of this benefit, and once we make them aware of it, they do not understand how to access it. Right at Home has developed a partnership with the VCC to ensure eligible veterans have access to these funds they have earned and deserve.

Healthcare providers cannot live in a vacuum. Industry collaboration, strategic alliances and commonality in service delivery goals are critical to our success and the well-being of our clients.

Why Right at HomeIndustry Leadership ProgramsRight at Home has launched several programs to assist franchisees in becoming stronger, healthier, and more profitable businesses. In these exciting programs, we offer valuable benefits and training to help Right at Home businesses of all sizes and volume become more established and knowledgeable in the in-home healthcare field.

RightTransitions®

Currently, one in five Medicare beneficiaries who leave the hospital are readmitted within 30 days. Studies estimate that up to 76% of these readmissions may be preventable. The average cost per preventable readmission is $7,200, because Medicare reduces payments to hospitals with high readmission rates. Hospitals now have a financial incentive to ensure their patients are adequately cared for once they are discharged.

Right at Home was the first nationwide brand to create a package of services, called RightTransitions, to assist hospitals, as well as other providers, in the reduction of preventable hospital readmissions and associated costs. The program helps ensure a safe transition for patients back into their homes where minor oversights, such as medication errors, can cause an unexpected trip back to the hospital.

Right at Home conducted a three-year home pilot study in conjunction with Forsyth Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC, with funding from the Duke Endowment. When including Right at Home’s RightTransition services, the following results were recorded:

• 65% reduction in preventable readmissions • 99% patient satisfaction rate• Hospital savings of $1.1 million

Why Right at HomeRightCare

Right at Home’s RightCare program is focused upon improving the current business model and the critical contact points relating to the client experience. Both client and employee satisfaction can be measured and improved by defining stakeholder values, designing and implementing appropriate change, and measuring results.

The RightCare program benefits franchisees by:

• Identifying points to improve satisfaction and retention rates

• Offering a centralized reporting system with access to all client and employee performance data

• Providing performance trending comparisons compared to regional and national industry data

• Fostering a sharing of best practices

The RightCare program ensures that the Right at Home brand is being delivered consistently across all channels while improving satisfaction and retention for employees, franchisees and clients. By providing a web-based portal through which top trends for individual franchisees, regions and groups can be identified, appropriate training, support and praise can be positioned company-wide.

Profit Mastery® Program

Business Resource Services (BRS), a Seattle-based company specializing in performance management for owners and independent business managers, has designed the Profit Mastery program to assist franchisees in becoming better, more profitable franchise owners. Right at Home has partnered with BRS, a company with considerable, long-term experience in the franchise industry, to address the needs of Right at Home franchisees and further improve our Right at Home business model.

The Profit Mastery program, which has become the standard in performance management during the past 15 years, includes three main components:

• A foundation of financial management and education• Financial benchmarking• Performance groups to provide accountability and discipline

The Profit Mastery program enables Right at Home franchisees to manage their businesses more effectively and efficiently. Franchise businesses will be compared in performance groups to highlight differences, create goals and action plans, and to share best practices.

We feel like we probably have one of the best online presences of anybody around. People will say, “Well I found you online, but your website was just so impressive, that we decided to call you!”- Lew Myers, Franchisee, Washington D.C.

www.rightathomefranchise.com

Right at Home Franchisee ProfileThere’s no magic formula or personality test that will tell you, without question, whether or not you should be in this business. There’s also no perfect age, gender or marital status that will guarantee success. But there are some common themes. Once you complete your research, including talking with several of our existing franchisees, you’ll have a much better idea of whether or not this business is a good fit for you.

What You NeedPassion. For some, it’s a passion for making a difference in the lives of families in their local community. For others, it’s a passion for building a successful business and for creating independence for their own family through business ownership. Whatever your motivation is, you must have a passion for what you’re doing in order to be successful.

What You Do Not NeedMost franchisees don’t have previous healthcare experience and most have never owned their own business. The fact is that many of our franchisees are from the corporate world. They’ve taken their business skills that were honed by working for others and put those skills to work for themselves in their own business.

Franchisee ProfilesTypically, Right at Home has attracted franchisees who fall into three main categories:

1. Independence Seekers – These tend to be business-oriented people who are attracted to senior care because of the potential for growth. They want to build a single unit business that serves people in their local community, while also providing independence, flexibility and a quality lifestyle for their own family.

2. Mission-Driven Providers – These are people who are drawn to this business because it improves the quality of life for others. In some cases they’ve seen the need for this business firsthand in their own family, so they know the positive impact our services can have.

3. Empire Builders – About 10% of Right at Home owners fall into this category. These are people that want to build a substantial, multiple unit business.

The future is bright! I can’t think of a better time and to have the support of a global, not just a national, but a global system behind us. Who helps us with programs, tools, training, consultative advice, and compliance, to help us grow to where we’re not having to do it all ourselves.”- Renee Concialdi, Franchisee, Pasadena, CA

Having that national corporate office that does the research and works for us on a level that we don’t have time to do on a day to day basis has benefited our office greatly.”- Danielle Weaver, Franchisee, Raleigh, NC

Timeline and Process to Become a Franchise OwnerIt typically takes 30-60 days for us to complete our research on each other. During this time, we want to get to know you as a person – your background, your accomplishments and how business ownership will help you reach your goals. We also give you the opportunity to get to know us as individuals and as a company, and to get answers about everything you need to know prior to moving forward with us.

After the Franchise Agreement is signed, most franchisees open for business within three to four months. Below you’ll find a summary of each step of the research process.

1. Initial CallDuring our first call, we’ll have a high-level conversation about you, your background, your family and your goals for owning a business. We’ll also discuss the financial investment parameters and we’ll verify that your desired territory is still available. Assuming this call goes well, you will be invited to complete a personal profile that will tell us in more detail about you.

2. Personal Profile ReviewOnce we receive your completed profile we’ll schedule a more in-depth conversation with you to discuss your profile and how a senior care franchise could help you achieve your goals. By taking the time to get to know you, we’ll build a solid foundation for our relationship which will help us determine together whether a Right at Home franchise would be a good fit for you and your family.

3. Business OverviewThis is an in-depth discussion of the senior care industry, how a typical Right at Home office operates, and how we will support and train you. This discussion is usually spread across several phone calls and webinars. Topics include:

Industry and Business Overview, including mission and history of Right at Home.

Day-to-day Business Operations, including office setup, caregiver recruitment and retention, finding customers (marketing), client and case management, payroll and billing, and general office workflow.

Support and Training, which will include a discussion of our highly-rated two-week owner’s training program, RightStart® support structure, vendor management, proprietary business tools, and other support and training that you can expect as a Franchise Owner.

Industry Leadership and Innovation which is where we will discuss programs such as RightCare, Right Transitions, and our involvement with various industry associations focused on improving care for the elderly.

In this type of business, without having a system behind you and all of these resources, you’ll never reach the potential that you could. You’ll never do it on your own, it’s just a fact.”- Mike Brown, Franchisee, Columbia, SC

4. Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD)The FDD contains everything you need to know about Right at Home, including a Financial Performance Representation that provides a detailed summary of how our offices perform. Knowing that most prospective franchisees have never read one of these documents before, we’ll take the time to walk you through it to help you understand how to find the information you need to make an informed business decision.

5. Validation with Current FranchiseesAfter we’ve answered your questions about the FDD, we’ll add you to our Validation List. You will now be able to speak with the people who may soon be your colleagues. You can ask the Franchise Owners anything and get all of the information you need from someone who runs an in-home care franchise just like the one you’re considering.

6. Discovery DayOnce you’re comfortable with the FDD and have gone through Validation, you’ll have a phone interview with a member of our franchise development team. After that call, you may be invited to attend a Discovery Day at our Omaha, Nebraska world headquarters.

7. Approval and Agreement ExecutionOn the first business day after Discovery Day, we’ll notify you of your approval status. If we decide together that it seems like a mutually beneficial relationship, we will guide you through the signing of documents and immediately start working with you on your pre-opening checklist. It may feel like the end, but it’s actually just the beginning!
