MESSAGE FROM MANAGEMENT

Welcome

Welcome once again to our quarterly edition of the Accommodation Services Residential Review.

It certainly has been a memorable quarter for our Residents, with many exciting events taking place across our Victorian campuses.

Our residents have been extremely active of late, with a huge array of events running over the past few months. Our Bendigo Campus has been go karting and hosted their own Amazing Race. Melbourne residents were lucky enough to take an awe-inspiring trip to the Great Ocean Road or bounce about at the ObstaSplash Inflatable fun run. The next few months see ski trips to Mt Hotham, hiking in the Grampians and a trip to Werribee Zoo to come.

The season of Formal Balls is truly underway in Melbourne and it was amazing to see how well you all present – some of you, who I rarely see wearing shoes during daylight hours, looked unrecognisable in your dapper suits and gowns.

Our annual City vs Country Inter-campus cup highlights the amazing abilities of our residents, and this year was no exception. It was great to see our students showcasing their talents and battling it out for college bragging rights and the prestigious cup. The inclusion of Albury-Wodonga in this year’s cup was fantastic to see and certainly increased the competitiveness amongst the Melbourne and Bendigo contingents.

SWOT-Vac will soon be upon us, and with the cold weather closing in it’s important to focus on your health as well as your studies. To maintain balance, make time to go to the gym, play sport with friends and take advantage of all the events and opportunities our team has arranged for you. With pancake stalls and pizza nights as well as Zumba and Yoga sessions, we’ll help keep your mind off exams.

Our facilities and maintenance team have been working tirelessly to upgrade our amenities, and bring our residences and surrounds into the modern era. Residents can now enjoy the cinema/summer study area above Menzies theatre and work has just begun on the Graduate House common room. Chisholm residents will have noticed that the Arts Centre has been given a much-needed facelift, providing a cosy space for relaxed studying or socialising with friends after hours. We were happy to see the opening of our new BBQs and outdoor area at McFarlanes Hill.

Finally, I wish to acknowledge our 2016 Student leader cohort, who I have been immeasurably impressed with so far this year. Thank you all for your work in our vibrant residential communities.

My team and I are here to ensure that your time living with us is the best of your life. So don’t hesitate to contact us about anything to do with living ‘on res’ and we hope you enjoy the second half of 2016.

SOUTH AFRICA

NEPAL

SOUTH AFRICAEvery country in the world displays some diversity, but South Africa, stretching from the hippos in the Limpopo River to the penguins waddling on the Cape, takes some beating. The Lonely Planet Guide

You will experience true South African beauty. The reserve covers more than 6000 hectares and is situated on the south-eastern coast, offering a wonderful backdrop for your time on the reserve. Your daily duties will have you on game drives, capturing and counting animals, landscaping, tree planting, predator interaction and caring, and much more. This is an opportunity to experience a wide variety of activities whilst learning about the local animals, breeding patterns, wildlife management and native environment.

NEPAL Wedged between the high wall of the Himalaya and the steamy jungles of the Indian plains. Nepal is a land of snow peaks and Sherpas, yaks and yetis, monasteries and mantras. The Lonely Planet Guide

You will experience three exciting weeks living with a rural Nepalese community and will be immersed in breathtaking scenery, wildlife and culture as part of your daily routine. Your village will be located 35km from Kathmandu and was established as a refuge for Nepalese females to work and provide for their families. You can choose to work on agricultural projects, child development, and wellbeing or international writing.

GLOBAL PROGRAMS 2016

Brad Dorahy, CISaustralia Founder, and Executive Director, gave our residents the know-how on Global Programs.

Brad ventured out to our Bendigo and Bundoora campuses on 10 and 11 May to give a presentation on the seven programs available, which we have outlined over the next pages.

INTER-CAMPUS CUPSunday 20 March saw the fourth Inter-Campus Sport ‘City vs Country’ Competition. Residents supported their teams from Bundoora, Bendigo, and Albury Wodonga, competing in netball and Aussie rules football.

Women’s netball saw Bendigo in first place, Bundoora in second and Albury-Wodonga in third. Bundoora championed both women’s and men’s football, competing against a joint Bendigo and Albury-Wodonga ‘Country’ team.

As well as an up-close viewing of the games, residents loved the entertainment, food trucks, face painting, slushies, BBQ, photo booth, and mobile DJ.

“Bendigo came with a lot of support – 3 buses full – and it was a great atmosphere,” said Kersti Skinner, Offsite Sports Ambassador.

“Each team was well presented and everyone played to their best abilities, with all sports ambassadors working really well together.”

A big thank you goes out to our special guests, Libby Birch (Victorian State Netball U/21 team), Billy Stretch (Melbourne FC) and Dennis Armfield (Carlton FC), from the Sports La Trobe

– Elite Athletes Program. Libby, Billy, and Dennis went above and beyond, from assisting with the presentations to giving motivational team talks on the day.

We appreciate the efforts of our Accommodation staff, Sam Fualau (La Trobe Bundoora – City vs Country Events Organiser), Georgia Irvine and Rachael Carr (La Trobe Bendigo), and Melissa McFarlane (La Trobe Wodonga), as without them this event would not have been such a success.

The smooth running event also had two ex-residents to thank, Ashlee Perry and Liam Fuller, from the Bundoora Campus.

A final thank you to Brett Tonkin’s (President of La Trobe Footy Club) Brian Razbocan (Programs Manager, Sports Centre), and Renee Frizzle (Sports Development Officer, La Trobe Sports), for their efforts, both leading up to the event and on the day.

This is the third win, out of four, for Bundoora, champions of the 2013, 2015 and 2016 competitions. There will be more events in Semester 2, so keep your eyes and ears open for another amazing day!

Our Academic Programs have continued to go from strength to strength in this half of Semester 1. We have had great attendance at our first year mentoring sessions, a huge turn out to our Pearls of Wisdom event, as well as an amazing SWOT-Vac week for all of our residents here at the Bundoora Campus.

PEARLS OF WISDOMOn Thursday 5 May, 100 residents arrived at The Odeon, in the Union Building, for Pearls of Wisdom. The night was very successful, with many of our residents taking advantage of the event to mingle and network with the speakers. The speakers touched on many different topics, sharing what they have learned along their individual pathways. This was of great value to the residents who are on their own, unique journeys.

PUPPY FESTIVALFriday 6 May was definitely a day to remember, with some of the widest smiles and most cheerful laughs being heard from the Menzies College courtyard. The Puppy Fest had arrived and was certainly a great opportunity to destress and cuddle-up with some cute puppies. The residents were lucky enough to play with five, adorable Border Collie puppies, as they jumped around and soaked up the attention. Around one hundred residents attended the Puppy Fest, realising how important it is to take a break and enjoy the wonderful life of a La Trobe resident.

SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT

The second quarter of 2016 was packed full of social events, giving our residents plenty to do. Whether it was playing sports for your college or trekking across the windy, Great Ocean Road, we provided plenty of fun options for our residents to fill in their time.

INTERCOLLEGE SPORTSThe intercollege sports ladder has been hotly contested, with all three colleges showing off their skills and performing strongly.

As it stands, Glenn College is leading the pack with 14 points, Menzies closing in on 11 points and Chisholm/Offsite not far behind with 8 points. Make sure that you continue to support your college, as there are another five events to take place, including the heavily anticipated ‘Ring Road Relay’ on Wednesday 14 September.

OUTBOUNDThis semester’s Outbound program had a strong emphasis on experiencing Victoria and staying active whilst doing it. Black Hawk Operations on 5 and 6 March was a 7km fun mud run where our residents dressed in their finest ‘camo’ overalls and took on a mud-filled course. We had 80 students register for the mud run, with many of our residents bringing out their weekend warrior and having a lot of fun while doing it!

The Great Ocean Road Experience saw 22 residents enjoy an awesome day seeing the sights and sounds of Victoria’s most famous beach road. The residents experienced the beautiful Twelve Apostles, rainforest walks, the Gibson steps, the breathtaking Loch Ard George, even managing to stop in the great Apollo Bay.

The Obstasplash 5km inflatable run took place on Saturday 30 April and Sunday 1 May, with 110 students registering for a fun‑packed day. Obstasplash spans 5km of grassland with inflatable obstacles – such as inflatable dance floors with themed music. Our residents had an amazing time being a kid for the day, using the day as an opportunity to get to know some of the other residents from different colleges.

It has been a fantastic year for the outbound program and the second semester is sizing up to be just as good. The Mt Hotham Overnight Ski Trip will be on August 26 and 27, the Grampians great escape on September 11 and the Werribee Open Range Zoo on October 9. These activities are available to all of our residents and with the discounted prices available we highly recommend that you get involved and have some fun.

COLLEGE SOCIAL EVENTSAs always, the college social events are proving to be a favourite amongst many of the residents.

After the madness and fun that was Resfest in February, March followed up with Tower Parades, Glow Parties, and Glow Shuffle Parties. A moonlight cinema night on April 14 had the Glenn College in a frenzy as they sat in their courtyard watching movies under the stars and enjoying a meal from the food trucks. Thursday 28 April, was the official opening of the Formal annual balls for 2016, with Menzies College kicking off proceedings with a magical night. We are all looking forward to the other formal balls so make sure to register for a great night with friends and fellow residents.

LOOKING AHEADFor those that have seen the brand new 350+ inch screen in Glenn Dinning hall, it is something to get excited about! We know that having the opportunity to watch your favourite TV shows, big sporting events, and the largest blockbusters on a screen that size, on campus, is what we all want. So, we have decided to make this a reality. Stay tuned for some exciting days and nights under the Glenn big screen!

It’s been a busy semester, with a slew of excellent health and wellbeing initiatives kicking off across residence!

Following up the success of our Healthy Relationships Comedy Night, the RA-Health teams in each college did a fantastic job organising their first large-scale events of the year! Focusing on our Mental Health dimension of wellness, these programs combined guest speakers (Beyond Blue, Counselling Services, and LaughLife Wellbeing Programs), heaps of free food, giveaways, and, for those at Glenn College, a mobile massage therapy team. Excellent work by everyone involved, and we look forward to seeing you out in full force to support our upcoming Empowerment and Respect, Physical Wellbeing, and Choose-Your-Own-Adventure events in Semester 2.

On March 22, we were once again thrilled to be involved in LTU Pride in support of our GLBTQI students and staff. At the event, we handed out doughnuts and cupcakes to students in exchange for their thoughts on how to respond to homophobic comments such as “That’s so gay.” We spoke with over 300 students on the day and really enjoyed the opportunity to discuss the importance of inclusive language on our campus. We’re all in this together – let’s make La Trobe University a safe and respectful space for all!

Our 14th issue of The Dunny Despatch goes out next week, our last until you return for Semester 2. Thus far in 2016, we’ve covered topics as diverse as safe sex, study support, mental health, personal responsibility, and getting a good night’s sleep. With exams right around the corner, we hope you’ve enjoyed our tips and tricks for relieving stress, and that you’ve all noted our noise curfew policies. In our final Semester 1 issue, look forward to an overview of our immensely popular SWOT-Vac program – you won’t want to miss it!

SO LONG, FAREWELL…I’ve had a blast getting to know many of you this semester, and as I move on to a different space within the University, I wish you all the very best of luck!

Please be sure to drop into Accommodation Services to meet my fabulous replacement, Jo Wotton – she’s super keen to help you in any way she can!

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

LOOKING AHEADWe hope you’ve enjoyed getting around our other events this semester, including college-wide Financial Fitness events on May 16, self-defence on May 12 and 26, and our healthy study snacks demo in the Glenn Dining Hall on May 19. As always, there will be heaps of opportunities to get involved in managing your health and wellbeing in Semester 2, so please stay tuned!

Goodbye AliWE WILL MISS YOU!

Chisholm resident, and first year La Trobe student, Lachlan Fredricksen was awarded a much needed fridge/freezer through an alumni donation.

The donation came from Dr Kemperly Dynon, who was a Menzies resident for five years during her undergraduate degree and honours year. Kemperly remembers working three jobs during the summer break, including being a waitress in Clifton Hill and a Technical Assistant in the Biochemistry Department during the school year, to fund her college rent and living expenses.

“Austudy was a dream come true when I received it in my Honours year,” said Kemperly. Kemperly currently works at La Trobe as the Senior Biosafety Officer in Research Integrity and wanted to give back to Accommodation Services, and help a current resident in need of their own fridge.

Lachlan is studying a bachelor of Creative Arts, hoping to transfer into a bachelor of Media and Communications, majoring in Journalism. Originally from Maryborough, located between Bendigo and Ballarat, Lachlan is loving life on-campus, “everyone is so friendly.” After graduating from high-school in 2014, Lachlan took a gap year to save money for his studies, enabling him to live on-campus.

We would like to thank Kemperly for her kind donation, and hope Lachlan enjoys the luxury of his newest bedroom accessory.

COMMUNITY CHALLENGEWhere was George? Our colourful, La Trobe USB stick was finally found after four challenging, cryptic clues.

He was found stuck in a tree, on the edge of Menzies Courtyard by the Hungry Hungry Hippos team comprising of Morgan Pecar, Benjamin Godde, and Joshua Millward. We are certain that the brain power used to find George will be replenished after receiving their value-packed hampers! Stay tuned for the Semester 2 instalment of the Community Challenge.

Did you have trouble figuring out the clues? We have translated them below – they were extra tricky this semester!

Clue #1: George is a wee water loving lad, some say his best friend is Sophia = David Myers lawn, next to the statue of Sofia.

Clue #2: George loves crossing the cultural bridges whilst viewing the lakes as oceans = The bridge between Accommodation Services and the Sylvia Walton building.

Clue #3: North, West, South, front, back, side… decisions = Menzies courtyard.

Clue #4: From nature’s vantage point I can see health and wellbeing and social through the glass… almost home = In a red tree, on the edge of Menzies Courtyard, outside the Accommodation Services office windows.

Brendan McCarthy Residential Education Coordinator: Community Standards E [email protected]

COMMUNITY GIFT BAGSAll La Trobe residents know how much we value positivity and helping others, and this is why we have such things as the Community Gift Bags.

So far we have awarded Samantha Shirley, Nicole Peruzzi, Matthew Mooney, Samantha Delmenico, Jess Littore and Louisa Borchers for their terrific efforts. These bags were given to individuals who have made a conscientious effort to improve the campus community. We hope that they all enjoyed their gifts and in doing so, reinforced the importance of community for all La Trobe residents.

Resident Report When I was going through VTAC in 2013 to see where I would go for my studies, La Trobe University caught my attention.

It was a metropolitan university with a country vibe to it. Coming from a small country town with 12,000 people, I wasn’t sure how I would go living away from home and in the big smoke.

Your time on college will be your most memorable time ever. Forget Year 12, college is the single most exciting year of your life. I digress, I didn’t believe them. Oh, how wrong I was. My leaders were so welcoming of me when I moved in that I knew that it would be an amazing year.

My College friends are the best I have ever had. The opportunities that have come up and the memories I have are truly amazing. College is by far one of my most amazing experiences. I am thankful for everyone that has made this semester so memorable and I look forward to the rest of the year.

 How low can you go?

U WHATHealth and Wellbeing team hosted the ‘U‑What’ Trivia night on Tuesday 12 April.

Briefly, the event was a trivia and games night with a children’s party theme, with the purpose of developing community spirit and providing an opportunity for fun and friendship. The layout of the event included a number of tables to seat the teams as well as a PowerPoint display. Participants were seated by room numbers to encourage the development of new friendships. Free finger food, fairy bread, lollies, and chips were placed on all tables. The student leadership team of Health and Wellbeing and Unit RA’s were designated scoring, observing, and hosting roles for the night. There were four rounds of trivia with questions based on living on Units during 2016. Various games were interspersed throughout the night at the end of each round of trivia where contestants could gain bonus points for their team. One or two volunteers from each team participated in a game each round in challenges that varied from chubby bunny, where contestants attempted to fit as many marshmallows in their mouth as they could, from eating apples off a string, through to balancing balloons on heads. Prizes were handed out for first, second and third place as well as seat-prizes. The night was a great success with over 80 participants for the night. The event was a bunch of fun with great feedback from students.

Andrew Mair Residential Assistant

T RACES The concept behind the event was to allow students to discover different areas of the university campus and complete fun and engaging activities on the way.

Teams were provided with a map of the campus comprising ten activity stations that involved a range of tasks requiring speed, smartness or strength to complete. Activity stations ranged from music quizzes to apple bobbing and even making a mess with tissue boxes. As students raced around the stations, student leaders took on the roles of designated timekeepers, watching for which teams completed their set activity in the fastest time. Once all activities were completed teams raced to the Terrace House where they submitted their maps and were offered icy poles for their efforts. Prizes were designated to the fastest overall team, as well as teams that completed individual activities in the fastest times. Overall it was a fantastic event with 101 students participating and a magnificent effort from the leadership team and coordinators.

VILLAS NIGHT BBQOn the evening of Tuesday 19 April we held our villa community event with great success.

Everyone from villas came together as one big group, we got some music playing and a bit of a barbeque happening so people could socialise and make new friendships within the villas. As a group, we created a piece of art representing what we value as students on res. Our final piece of art showed what we think shines through here on villas, academics, social/fun, community and diversity. It was a great turn out and a chance to meet new people.

HILLSIDE EGG CHALLENGE The hillside egg challenge helped bring all the residents together for water‑based games on a hot day.

The challenge consisted of an exciting game of capture the flag with water balloons and chocolate eggs. It then moved on to a water balloon fight, which ended up in the ressies attacking each other but mostly their own student leaders. This was a really fun and exciting way to destress and promote interaction among residents. The ones that made it to the final round had to partake in a game of egg roulette, with the winner taking home a horse watch. All in all it was a great day and after the games all hillside residents enjoyed pizza for dinner.

ORDER HOUSE – THE ZONE The residents at Orde House were given the opportunity to be big‑little kids again when they were spoilt with Ultimate Passes at The Zone.

Held in the fourth week of semester, which is great timing as most of the ressies have settled into uni life and res life, the community event involved rollerblading, go-karting and multiple games of laser tag. It was excellent to see ressies getting to know one another in a setting different to the House; showing off their mad skills on the blades, their swerving techniques while go karting, or their competitive nature in the battlefield of laser tag. The night ended with ample pizza and drinks for dinner. Needless to say everyone was exhausted and all called it a night soon after coming home. Our community event was a huge success with nearly all residents joining in on the fun. It really helped build upon the foundations of friendship and kinship that was laid down during move in week. Looking forward to the rest of the year with such an awesome bunch of housemates!

Resident Report Health and Wellbeing kicked off 2016 with the Amazing Race around Bendigo and Campus during Res Fest.

The event allowed for ressies to mingle and familiarise themselves with their new home. We supported ressies’ transition to life away from home in the first few weeks with Wellness Wheels covering topics such as Drug and Alcohol and Financial Fitness. Throughout the semester the team have organised smaller events to promote a sense of community within each residence, including Terrace-Races, Hillside Egg Challenge, Orde House’s trip to The Zone, U What? Units Trivia Night, and Villa’s Community BBQ. The Health and Wellbeing Portfolio thoroughly enjoy creating events that foster kinship between ressies’ as well as their personal wellbeing. Our quick decision making, clear communication, organisation skills and teamwork, enable us to overcome any challenges that we face. A huge shout out to Rachel and Georgia for always supporting us (spoiling us), not to mention the ressies themselves for participating! Looking forward to the rest of the year!

BENDIGO CAMPUS NEWS

RACHEL ROBERTSON The student leader group had the privilege of meeting and hearing from Rachel Robertson; a highly demanded female speaker in Australia and expert on leadership and teamwork.

Rachel told us about her story and pathway that took her to a place where few people get to tred; Antarctica. Her fascinating story showed how simply taking a chance and being brave could potentially lead you to great experiences. Further, as team-leader in Antarctica with a small group of people for nine months, she was able to relate to the student leaders and gave wise advice on leadership and people skills.

The leadership lesson I found most applicable to res-life is that, as leaders, we should strive for mutual respect amongst our ressies rather than trying to get all residents to be best-friends. It is important in situations involving small communities that respect amongst all members is established in order for all members to live together successfully and this is what I will continually try to achieve with my ressies.

Tash Romas Academic Mentor

ACADEMIC MENTORING SESSIONSThe mentors have been working extensively over the last 7 weeks to support and help their mentees with study tools, LMS, and assessments.

Resident Report So far, being an Academic Mentor has been unlike any of the other roles I have.

It stands out because of the opportunity it gives us to have real and tangible positive impacts on our mentees. Of course, at times, it is hard and not always easy and like anything requires time management and prioritising. But there is little else quite as rewarding as seeing a mentee’s work dramatically improve.

It is fantastic having your advice utilised and watching their assignments increase in quality from a somewhat anxious attempt on their first ever university essay to a more confident and collected approach to a major assignment.

LOOKING AHEADMentors are now in the middle of planning SWOT-Vac for end of Semester 1, providing a range of activities and events as an out-let for our ressies during those crazy times of studying before exams.

BENDIGO CAMPUS NEWS

TOGA PARTY Our annual Toga party on Tuesday 22 March was held at the Universal nightclub. We collaborated together to ensure the students were able to have the best entertainment, food and overall a great night. We also had well-known DJs; Some Blonde Dj and Orkestrated. Our Mod Squad student leaders handed around waters and pizzas to all students.

FAMILY FEUD Family Feud was our big event for this semester, students entered in teams to compete against each other exactly like you see on TV. It was a hilarious night that we had great feedback on! We were able to give away a lot of prizes, like watches and vouchers. The winning team this year won an all paid for dinner which they were ecstatic about.

JUMPZJumpz was another small social club event, giving students a fun alternative to going out. It is the first time we were able to work with jumpz on a res wide scale and we will definitely be going to see them again!

POOL PARTYAccommodation Services collaborated with the Bendigo Student Association to provide a small event for our students during those hot first weeks. It was a warm 35 degrees on the day and students were able to kick back with a BBQ and some cool soft drinks.

Resident Report Being a social club, this semester has been a fun, exciting and challenging opportunity, I have had the opportunity to deliver and be a part of some great diverse events.

I was on the MOD Squad on the night of toga (where you are sober until 10 pm), we handed out pizza and water which was a funny experience. Something I aspired to as a social club member for 2016 was to have a positive impact as a student leader with the events we conduct here in Bendigo. Being able to assist in the logistics of events such as decorating, organising food and planning has been a great learning experience. I am looking forward to seeing what the rest of 2016 brings to our social club team.

Resident Report Residents have all settled in and are enjoying their first experiences of life out of home! New friendships have been formed which can be seen in residents supporting each other, both with university work and the transition to independent life. A number of residences have also stepped up to develop their own leadership and networking skills, and will continue to be encouraged to do so throughout the next semester.

Kim and Kate Residential Assistants

One of the goals for the RA’s of East End Residence this year was to organise more activities for people to participate in and to do things that promote being active. One of these was playing netball. We played in a competition in Albury against Charles Sturt University. There were two teams from East End who participated. The event was a really good opportunity to get to know each other, bond and work as a team, whiling having fun. Even though we all brought different skills and a range of experience some really good games of netball were played.
