Page 2: Research into magazines macro

macro The audience seems to be aimed more so at males. The main image creates a rough, masculine

“hard” image which connotate toughness therefore creates the effect that the magazine is aimed at males. Although the red colour scheme could be seen to be feminine yet on the other the hand the red could connotate blood and therefore be another link to the target audience of males. The word “insane” is a term used more so with males; this again creates the effect that they are trying to use language to attract a male audience.

The band in the main image are being represented in a masculine and quite intimidating way due to their eyes. Their eyes also create a mischievous image and evil due to the black eye make-up. The watch being held creates a uniqueness about the band and also magical aspect to the band. The placement of their hands create a tough image and also creates the effect that they are in charge . After looking at the cover line which suggests that their new album is “insane” it then creates the effect that the members in the band are being represented in a insane way also. Due to the way the main image is being represented, it then creates a similar representation of the magazine as a whole. A simple yet mysterious image has been created of the magazine due to the main image. The word “insane” creates the effect that the contents relating to the band on the front is crazy , but in a good way which would draw the target audience in as the information is seen to be “out of this world” and “new”. “New” things are always a big attraction also.

A indie rock image has been created by the main image, creating a target audience to think that the magazine genre is aimed at indie rock yet including “Little Boots” in a cover line suggests a wider range in the genre and that the magazine is aimed at a mainstream target audience.

The use of conventions have been used in this magazine. For one a mid-shot has been used which is typical for magazines. It creates a sense that you are actually looking at the band in person, that creates a connection between the reader and the magazine. The use of buzz words have been used in a circular shape, which again is typical for advertising free things or competitions. Another typical this is that the main image reflects the main cover line and the fact the cover line and the masthead are similar sizes is also a typical thing that emphases the fact that it is as important that the magazine name is recognised as well as the main story within the magazine to draw people to purchase it.
