What I will cover

I did some research in order to get some ideas for my ancillary work .I will be looking at the work of well known artists that I think will inspire my ancirally work and aslo that would make it appeal to my genre.

Digipak – David Guetta

Page 4: Research ancillery

AnalysisDavid Guetta’s album cover clearly shows his face. An important visual element for digipaks is the demonstrations of the artist’s face at the front in order for us to know who it is. The colour is black and white. The artist’s name is in big, readable letters. Then the name of the album follows in a different and smaller font. The colour also changes for the album name. The text does not block the artist’s face, which is an important element to consider. The back shows very clearly the names of all the songs in each of the CDs that the album includes. Also, we can see the barcode at the bottom followed by the accreditations and important websites. The label’s logo is shown next to the barcode. The spine shows the artist’s name as well as the album's.

Digipak – Chris Brown

Analysis

On the front cover, we encounter ourselves with a portrait of Chris Brown looking directly at us. It looks like an animated drawing. The background is very graphic based, trying to make it look urban, which relates to the genre, RnB. The name of the album is placed underneath Chris Brown. The font is white, which stands out from the other colours in the cover and also the font relates to the imagery. The text does not block the artist’s face. Also, we get a good idea of who the artist is.

Digipak – Michael Jackson

Page 8: Research ancillery

AnalysisThe front cover shows the silhouette of Michael Jackson filled with with photographs of him performing. The figure is big and fits the frame of the cover. At the top, there is a quote, followed by the artist’s name and then the name of the album. Unlike the other digipacks, the name of the artist is smaller than the album name. Perhaps this is because this artist is well known already. The font appears to be the same; it is just the colours that differ. The back clearly shows the track list as well as another silhouette of him. Underneath, the label logo and other contributors' logo are displayed, as well as the barcode. The spine shows the artist’s and album’s name, as well as the CD number and the name of the label.

Rihanna’s advertisement for ‘Rated R’ is very well structured. Her face can clearly be seen and the edited photograph is also very clear. The information of the album is all below her. Her name is printed in big and the white colour of the font contrast its black background. Some popular hits are displayed in different a different font, colour and size. Phrases like ‘The New Album’ shows that the album is now avaliable for customers to purchase. The record label is also displayed at the bottom corner.

Analysis

Disclosure have used the white lines on top of the faces to mark their brand identity. This has worked really well because it is an aspect that can easily be remembered by the public. The advertisement for the album is in landscape. The album cover is shown on the right. The name of both the artist and album is the same font, but the colours are different; they contrast each other making them stand out. The release date is also shown accompanied with the artist’s website and a link to iTunes.
