affiliated to our group. I am glad to report that

three board members participated in the regional

student conference in Iowa City. Tracey, Jeromy

and Bree gave the students a very powerful

presentation on the various roles performed by IEs.

This presentation was powerful because it was

based on personal professional experiences and

that resonated with the student participants.

Kelly Minchow, who is currently our director-at-

large, will take on the role of student chapter

liaison. As the point person for all student

chapters, Kelly will focus on re-establishing and

maintaining contact with all the student chapters in

the region. I encourage all the student chapters to

take this opportunity to work with our group.

I would also like to take this opportunity to invite

everyone to attend our upcoming events. On May

1st

, we will have a presentation on Human Factors

in Healthcare. Visit our website for information on

many other exciting events. We welcome your

feedback and you can reach us through our

President’s Message

Once a quarter we get a chance to look back and

see how we are tracking with regards to our

commitments to our members. I am pleased to

report that we started the year on a good note and

we have big plans for another successful year.

Member Value

In order to create better value and enhance the

experience for our members, we will continue to

offer events that cover trending topics in the

industry and also facilitate networking. In March,

we held a networking event at Gluek’s in downtown

Minneapolis. Our members and guests had a chance

to network and also cheer on their favorite college

basketball teams. In April, we held a joint event with

the local American Society for Quality (ASQ) and the

Association for Manufacturing Excellence (AME)

groups. This was our first joint event with other

Twin Cities groups in the last five years. The

participants were so delighted with this event that

we plan on organizing a similar event next year.

Value to IIE Students

At the beginning of the year we announced our

commitment to providing value to student chapters

Eric Situmbeko, IIE Twin Cities President.

Tracey, Bree and Jeromy share a total of 35 years

Industrial Engineering experience spanning all

industries (Transportation, Automotive, Healthcare

and Manufacturing). Topics of discussion included

how IEs contribute in different industries, formal and

informal continuing education, career development

and lessons learned.

Feedback from participants was extremely positive

including student Joshua Terrill who said,

“Participating in that discussion was one of the most

valuable pieces to my weekend and it was highly

suggested by all the Student Chapter Presidents that

there be a stronger IIE professionals presence at

future conferences.”

IIE Twin Cities already has an established relationship

with NDSU, including a recurring co-professional/

student event each fall, and is working to set up

something similar with other schools.

Thanks to all the students who participated. We hope

to see some of you at the March 2014 Regional

On Thursday, March 21st, Twin Cities hosted

its 2nd “Get Your Kueks at Gluek’s” March

Madness social happy hour at Gluek’s bar in

downtown Minneapolis. The event had a

large turnout with 25 professionals and

students from a wide range of the Twin Cities

diverse industries, including multiple

representatives from Target, Boston Scientific,

3M, Andersen Windows and US Bank. The

group watched the first round of NCAA

basketball while enjoying beverages and

hosted appetizers.

Past Event Recap

In addition, multiple door prizes were

distributed. The most sought after prize was

an industrial engineering joke book. Turns

out, the funniest part was that it was actually

not funny at all. Other prizes won were two

sets of Minnesota Timberwolves tickets, an IIE

shirt, IIE mug and other IIE paraphernalia.

Congratulations to the big winners and thanks

to those who came out to network. We look

forward to hosting another gathering with

your attendance!

Donaldson improves business processes by applying the

operating principles of the DPS, which include:

• Employee development to obtain DPS lean

certification

• The DPS assessment which measures and guides

implementation at facilities

• A continuous improvement card system which

facilitates managing for daily improvement

• Strategy deployment (Hoshin Kanri) which focuses

long term objectives

Billions of dollars in improvements to business processes are

made each year as Donaldson focuses on supply chain,

purchasing, engineering, marketing and new product

introduction.

Many thanks to Donaldson Company for being an excellent host

and to everyone that was able to join us.

On September 27th, Donaldson Company hosted IIE Twin

Cities and presented their application of lean in business

processes across Donaldson through the implementation

of the Donaldson Production System (DPS).

Donaldson Company, Inc. is one of the largest and

consistently growing filtration manufacturers in the

world. They serve a wide range of global markets,

including aerospace, agriculture, construction, defense,

disc drive, manufacturing, power generation, and

transportation.

Jeff Meyer-Quarberg, Corporate Senior Lean Process

Specialist, began the event by highlighting the company’s

98 year history and demonstrating their global product

applications in engine and industrial markets. The

company background presentation wrapped up with a

tour of their product display room, giving attendees a

hands-on exploration of the products and customers of

Donaldson.

The event continued with overview of the DPS. The DPS

is the way Donaldson unites the cultural, leadership and

operating systems in the pursuit of order to delivery

excellence. The foundation of the DPS structure is culture

and leadership. These sub-systems provide support for

the operating principles. The three systems overlap to

create one sustainable system, the Donaldson Production

System.

IIE Twin Cities Presents Change Management Workshop – The ‘Soft Stuff ’ is the Hard Stuff

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW: A lot of attention is paid to specific tools in Lean, Six Sigma and other improvement efforts. However, many

organizations still struggle with implementing what appear to be excellent ideas generated by their project teams or in realizing

sustainable results. Mastering the tools is not sufficient. To realize tangible results, leaders and team members must also understand

and manage the dynamics of change, resistance and resilience within their organizations. They must also lead by example. In other

words, the “soft stuff” is the hard stuff.

In this workshop, we’ll cover the concepts and skills for:

Aligning organizations around a vision for the new reality

Engaging the organization in creating the new reality

Communicating for successful change

Creating a culture that supports change

Identifying concrete ideas and tips to put them in to practice

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Learn key concepts and the history of change management. Discuss and share experiences and best practices

within the group. Receive key templates and exercises that can be used within your organization to manage the change process.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Managers, Supervisors, Quality, Engineers, Lean Champions, Project Managers and anyone involved with

leading improvement efforts.

What is IIE?

IIE is the world’s largest professional society dedicated solely to the support of the industrial engineering profession and

individuals involved with improving quality and productivity. Founded in 1948, IIE is an international, non-profit association

that provides leadership for the application, education, training, research and development of industrial engineering.

With approximately 15,000 members and 280 chapters

worldwide, IIE’s primary mission is to meet the ever-changing needs of industrial engineers, which includes undergraduate

and graduate students, engineering practitioners and consultants in all industries, engineering managers, and

engineers in education, research and government.

What is IIE Twin Cities?

The IIE Twin Cities Chapter 38 provides a network for individuals within Minnesota and surrounding areas to

collaborate about industrial engineering. Our members include professionals with industrial engineering degrees,

both working in IE and non-IE roles and professionals working in IE related functions.

We provide monthly events which include topics in

professional development, Lean, Six Sigma, Quality, process improvement and tours at distribution centers,

manufacturing facilities, hospitals and consulting firms. We also promote the industrial engineering profession by

providing scholarships to IE students and becoming involved with several student IIE chapters.
