Subject or object pronoun?

Subject pronouns are followed by a verb.

the apple which is lying on the table

Object pronouns are followed either by a noun or a pronoun. They can be omitted in defining relative clauses.

the apple (which) George left on the table

Types of relative clauses

DEFINING

Give detailed and necessary information, usually to define something.

-Never between commas

Do you know the girl who is talking to Tom?

NON-DEFINING

Give additional information

-Use of commas

-That can’t replace who/which

-We can’t omit the object pronoun

Jim, who/whom we met yesterday, is very nice.
