School Safety
Quarterly drills conducted including Fire, Lockdown, and Tornado.
December and January Fire Drills conducted with consistent timestamps of a minute and
thirty seconds’ evacuation time.
BPS was placed in a modified Lock Out in December as a precaution only. Students and
teachers did a fantastic job acting accordingly.
School, Family, and Community Engagement
Students enjoyed singing at their concerts, shopping at the Santa Shop hosted by PTSA,
visiting with Santa, and their winter parties before break.
Parents were invited to the third Mornings with Megan. Areas of strength discussed were the
climate and culture of the building. Parents want to see more done for teachers’ well-being
and more communication on volunteer opportunities. We set up the BPS parents’ volunteer
page on Facebook.
Wish for Wheels and Orica, Inc. provided each second
grader with a free bicycle and helmet. We are hoping to
maintain our relationship with this community partner to
arrange for similar grants for years to come.
Our Room has made innumerable donations to Bennett
community members and multiple care packages were
delivered or picked-up before break for the long break from
school.
3rd Grade Leadership Team will be hosting a Read-a-thon
the last week of January to encourage their peers to read.
All proceeds will go to purchasing wish list books for the
library!
Building Leadership, Teacher Support and Accountability
The Primary teachers are continuing their work on creating academic goals and closing
achievement gaps by analyzing individual student data. The teachers were also provided
additional professional development on how to determine the progressions of learning by
looking at the proficiency scales for all core subjects and aligning current resources.
The addition of the new
Kindergarten class has
transitioned smoothly.
Ms. Lechman has been
doing a wonderful job
at creating a classroom
family and diving right
into learning!

ACADEMICS & STUDENT GROWTH Mid-year MAPs testing will wrap up this week with the a few more makeup tests. The growth for some students is truly amazing. In addition to the usual reading, math, and science tests the students completed a language usage test. The language usage assesses the student’s levels in relation to grammar and conventions.
During our in-service time on January 3rd the teachers spent the morning reviewing proficiency scales, starting the formative assessment process and digging into the MAPs data to determine the students’ current level. Each section of our in-service supported our three major improvement strategies of our UIP; curriculum, instruction, and MTSS. We will continue this work within our data teams and monthly lunch and learns.
This semester we have partnered with some students from the High School National Honors Society to offer after school tutoring on Monday evenings from 4-5pm. This is optional for students but is a great time to get additional help from teachers and finish up missing assignments. Personalized invitations to Monday Night Tutoring will be offered to any student whose grade is a D or lower or has missing assignments. We want to provide as many opportunties as possible for students to be successful.
SCHOOL CULTURE & CLIMATE December was extremely busy with the 6th grade band concert, 4th and 5th grade music concerts, our Tiger Pride assembly, and various activities the teacher put together for the students. We also hosted a food can drive throughout the school and all donations were split between Our Room and the local food banks.
PTSA took some time over break to put some vinyl stickers of motivational quotes on the bathroom walls. These are positive affirmations for students to read daily.
Last quarter our Tiger Leadership started the Student Shout Out Board in the cafeteria. This is a place where students can recognize each other for their positive behaviors and exhibiting the PRIDE expectations. Our Tiger Leadership will start over this quarter with a new group of students who will have 8 weeks to instill a positive culture program in the school.
WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE CLASSROOM? The 4th grade classes had an extremely eventful December as they hosted a book signing for their “All about me” book, ran for class presidents, and building ginger bread adobe houses.

Academics and Student Growth Instruction and Curriculum: BMS is getting a fresh start to the semester. The teachers had a great in-service
day planning for the semester we start with a large curriculum view and narrow their planning to units and daily
lessons. We began our data driven meetings and are continuing our focus on formative assessment practices. We
are implementing instructional strategies encompassing learning targets. These Learning targets are most effective
and meaningful when students become engaged and empowered with their learning process.
When meeting with our students we teach the importance and the value of taking assessments that demonstrate what
students have learned. Although it may seem like quite a few years away our students will join the workforce soon,
it is vital that we provide them opportunities to experience similar expectations to demonstrate their knowledge
through assessments as they will have to do for a driving test or an entry level work position. We also are teaching
them that they will have to demonstrate proficiency of knowledge on the SAT to further their education if they are
wanting to enter into a college or university.
We as a staff consistently utilize instructional data from our MAPS assessments. Based on our winter test scores our
current seventh graders demonstrated growth in every area of math, reading, writing and science. Although our
seventh grade students demonstrated growth in math, they are not performing at grade level norms. The seventh
grade math scores have shown 0.8 points of growth. Their goal to meet 10.3 points of growth by the end of the year
would require more growth than shown throughout the year to date. In reading these students are performing a year
behind grade level and demonstrated a 1.9-point increase in their scores. Their goal to meet 5.9 points of growth by
the end of the year would require more growth than shown throughout the year to date. In language arts the seventh
grade students are performing a year below grade level norms. They demonstrated growth of 1.8 points and are just
4.4 points away from meeting the spring growth norms. In science, our seventh graders are performing above grade
level norms and demonstrated 1.5 points of growth from fall to winter.
The eighth grade students demonstrated a 0.8-point decrease in math demonstrating a drop from fall to winter
performing below grade level norms. Their goal to meet 10.5 points of growth by the end of the year would require
more growth than shown throughout the year to date. Our eighth grade students who are currently enrolled in the
high school Algebra 1 class demonstrated growth in the fall and we are currently waiting for their scores to be
populated January 13th. In reading the eighth graders demonstrated a growth increase of 1.2 points and are
performing at grade level norms. Their goal to meet 3 points of growth by the end of the year would require more
growth than shown throughout the year to date. In language arts eighth graders demonstrated a growth increase of
2.5 points and are performing at grade level norms. Their goal to meet 1.7 points of growth by the end of the year
demonstrate they should reach or perform above grade level norms. In science, they are performing 1.4 points
above grade level norms and demonstrated 1.5 points of growth from fall to winter. They are on track to meet goal
growth norms of 0.3 points.
All of our teachers are developing instructional action plans and goals to address the lack of growth. Our overall
goal is to track the student’s growth and target the national growth norms for end of year tests. When students meet
growth norms year after year it is more likely that the student will meet academic achievement. When completed
our teachers instructional action plans will be posted on the web-site under BMS information and School
Performance Reports.
Counseling Department: Ms. Beaver is a certified trainer for animal therapy. We were
proud to welcome Josie her dog as an official staff member of our team. Animal-assisted
therapy can significantly reduce pain, anxiety, depression and fatigue in people with a
range of health problems such as, students having dental procedures and medical
treatments/procedures. Animal therapy is not only for people with health/mental illnesses,
staff and family members who encounter Josie reap the benefits too. As part of our district
initiative to support the mental health wellness of our staff members Josie has brought
much joy and healing processes to our staff members through their daily grind.
School Culture and Climate Student Council: Student council members enhanced our school culture with their end of the semester holiday
spirit week. We had dress up days the last week of school and a Grinch Dance December 19th. Students played
games, danced and enjoyed concessions provided by our
PTO parent volunteers. Student council members prep all
the decorations, advertise, set up and clean up the event. We
are very proud of their leadership and setting a positive
school culture with their events.
Parent Committees: Our School Accountability Committee
will meet on January 14th to examine our MAPS test scores
and review our unified improvement plan. Our PTO
members hosted a breakfast for our district bus drivers on
December 19th as well as helped chaperoned our school
dance. Our PTO is scheduled to meet on Wednesday,
January 15th. The PTO is working with our student council
members again to provide the annual fun night Thursday,
February 6th. The fun night provides board games,
physically active games, concessions and obstacles courses
to raise money and provide a structured and supervised
social learning opportunity for students. Our student council
members set up and help run the games while parents help supervise.
This event has been a big hit the last two years and we are looking
forward to another Fun Night!
Extra-Curricular Activities: Our girls’ basketball teams and wrestlers are getting a strong start to the semester.
Basketball has their first game next week and Wrestling begins next weekend in Brush.
During second quarter basketball girls met together during their pride time and after school
to practice basic skills to get a head start on the season. The coaches are focused on
teaching beginning techniques, drills, and plays to instill a quality work ethic and team
work amongst the players. Our cheerleading squad has officially hit their one-year mark.
They continue to practice and refine their skills. You can see them at some of our middle
school sporting events and our spirit assemblies.
The Performing Arts Department performed six different concerts and one drama
production in December displaying their newly learned skills. Concert attendance was
among some of our highest numbers. Our music department hosted Eastern Colorado
Honor Band January 9th. We had 10 schools attend
with 184 students participating. Bennett had 29 high
school students and 25 middle school’s students
selected as the top musicians in Eastern
Colorado. This regional event provides
such a high quality learning experience for
students we are honored to host such an
event. Ms. White puts in a lot of additional
hours prepping and working with directors
and clinicians to make the event a success.
We are lucky to have such an outstanding
music director working with our students.
The middle school FFA department is making strides to becoming an official club of the middle school. They held
FFA officer elections in December and are participating in monthly meetings. We are proud of the strides Mrs.
Comer has made in such a short amount of time as a first year teacher. To support the development of the AG
program we added Animal Science, Leadership/Plant
Science and Intro to AG Mechanics to our course offerings
for second semester.
Current Enrollment:
7th – 96
8th – 92
Total - 188

Assessment
We started 2nd Semester off with MAPS testing. I think this will go very quickly as we have
another Chrome cart. We expect to finish by Monday January 13th. We will be looking at the
Winter data at our next staff meeting and using it with our data teams.
Instruction and Professional Development
We will continue our professional development with Mary Romke in February. This will include
more work with Learning Targets and Formative Assessments. We will also start looking at
proficiency scales in math and English. These will help teachers understand what they are
teaching and how that relates to what students need to be learning. It is a deep dive into our
school curriculum resources and allows us to better see any deficiencies in those resources.
I applied for a CS Principles Curriculum Opportunity and training for a teacher through a
partnership with University of Texas-Austin, Department of Education and UTeach training. We
GOT IT!!!! So we are finalizing paperwork and moving forward with the course.
Bennett High School Leadership Team has been working hard on the UIP. We have a
presentation for SAC/DAC on Jan. 14th.
Climate and Culture
I met with Freshman in December. We discussed school data and how we can raise our scores.
They had great questions about State and MAPS testing and how they can use that information
as well as their teachers. They asked for more clarification on how the tests they take affect
them and the school.
In December our Junior Pride Time students did 12 days of kindness.
Our presenter, Mr. Richie Contratesi, for our bullying … has been booked for Bennett School
District for Feb. 11th. His presentation will be for K-6, 7-12, athletes, teachers, staff and, in the
evening, the parents and community. Mr. Contratesi has included a membership for every
student who attends on his Goal Setting platform. We look forward to using this in our Pride
Time.
I will meet with my Pizza Groups as a team to look at goals for this semester and moving into
next year. We will be doing a Needs survey in February to helps us understand where students
are struggling and what they need. I’m working with Mary Romke and Leadership Team to
finalize this.
We are getting ready to start the scheduling process. We have a training with IC to help us
streamline the process through Infinite Campus. We are excited to see how they can help us.
On our end we have step one, which is looking at course descriptions and offerings and
finalizing our registration sheets. Step two will be registration of students through IC. Step
three is the building of the master schedule. Step four is the building of 360 individual students’
schedules for 2020-2021.
As a school we have revamped study hall! I have included my presentation to the students for
you to look at. In essence, as a staff we needed more time with students to make sure they are
getting the academic support they need, this is also a part of our UIP improvement strategies to
provide MTSS. Therefore, teachers will be holding small group sessions with students who
need extra time with them. Teachers are excited to work more closely with students! We
believe that this intensive time with them will help us make sure we are doing all we can to
provide them with the academic and SEL support they need. As such, I have a teacher during
each lunch willing to open up their rooms to provide kids with a more specific SEL support. I’m
reaching out to Pam Collins, from Tangled Minds, for advice on how to make this possible. We
will also be collecting data as to the success of this new study hall/tutoring session. (handout)
Additional Information/Comments:
Finished MAPS January 14th. We have yet to look at the data but will be doing the same as the middle school reviewing growth. Next staff meeting will have a data review. Will also review individual student’s data during “Pride Time”, set target goals and formative assessment goals.
Junior class did “Twelve Days of Kindness”, they put sticky notices; washed windows; read to the students as the elementary level etc. Kudos to juniors and staff!
February 11th Bully Speaker
Next “Pizza with the Principal” will be with both Junior and Senior students to discuss goal setting.
Kudos to Mrs. Meyer who is essential in provided the college courses.
Mrs. Salberg provided the Board with a handout on study changes and the small group tutoring. Students are accountable with their teachers. Seeing less tardiness from these changes.
Mrs. Barden inquired about the 20 minutes’ study hall if this adds to the lunch time. Mrs. Salberg said yes, the time period is now 52 minutes. Mrs. Barden said, “This makes me very nervous, worried a 52-minute lunch, what might happen.” Feel we (Board) were not heard.” Mrs. Salberg said the change was based on the lunch area time and when the students need to vacate the cafeteria.
Mr. DuBois said his son loves it and is taking advantage of the study hall/tutoring time.
Mr. Smialek inquired about the Computer Science Grant. Mrs. Salberg said this is a $1k stipend and for training plus all curriculum. Annual cost will be $500.00

Development
Keith and I responded to a change in referral for Bennett Ranch which is the subdivision planned
for the area that sets to the north east of the school district. The new referral states that they will
be building around 252 homes which is significantly smaller than the original plan. The district
is receiving 19 acres of land which adjoins the school district property. We are in the process of
completing the easement so that they can run utilities and tie into the town. We have reached out
again to Jeff Vogel who is the developer for the Prosper Subdivision which is located at Watkins.
We have yet to hear back from him. The town engineer will be in attendance at the February
board meeting to discuss storm water drainage as well as the gray water that the town has been
discussing in their meetings.
MLO Survey
I sent out the survey on the MLO as requested to parents through the messenger system. As of
today, we have 75 responses. The I-70 Scout will have a survey insert in it in both Spanish and
English for parents and community members to fill out if they prefer. The link to the survey is
listed at the bottom so they can also fill it out electronically. The insert in the paper will allow
community members the opportunity to mail it back to the district, drop it off at the mailbox
located at the high school, or send it to school with their student to drop off in the front office of
each building. I will send out a reminder next week as well as the following week via
emergency messenger to our families. The survey is open for the next three weeks. Out of the
75 responses that we have received so far, teacher recruitment and retention is trending first,
closely followed by small class sizes. Facility improvements and transportation is trending last
in response to the question that asks survey responders to rank the following in importance or
priority: Maintaining small class sizes, district safety upgrades and improvements, transportation,
teacher recruitment and retention, technology updates and improvements, and facility updates
and improvements. When asked what priorities do you believe the board of education should
focus on; a few of the answers were: teacher recruitment and retention, small class sizes, school
programming, and safety improvements to name a few. When asked why they did not support
the MLO, 54% of the respondents stated that they didn’t understand what the money would be
used for followed by 32% that stated they do not support tax increases. When asked what can
the District do to better explain school funding, needs of the District, responsibilities of
developers, or other topics, responses included: don’t build buildings, developers need to pay for
the buildings, free lunches, transparency, trust, marijuana taxes should pay for the buildings,
mental health needs, teacher raises, and then just general comments stating that they supported
the MLO and felt like we did a good job of communicating the District’s needs. I will have more
responses and updated information for you next week at the board meeting, and when the survey
is completed, I will have an update for the February board meeting to report on. You will each
receive the entire results of the survey.
Student Count
We received 14 new students since school began on Monday. Mrs. Matis is looking up school
identification numbers for four more that are not included in the count of 1158. We now have
four different languages spoken in the primary elementary.
Board Goals
The 90 day goals for the Board are listed on a whiteboard in Mrs. Matis’ office. Please let me
know if there is anything else that you would like added. Currently we have the
Superintendent’s Bullying Policy, transportation, the FFA Farm, Strategic Plan, and food service
including a commodities update for the February agenda. Other items on the board include:
growth plan, new subdivisions map, updating policies online, Budget 2020-21, primary and high
school entryway safety upgrades, CLC upgrade with painting and safety issues addressed, board
team building with CASB, communication and collaboration with our community, teacher-staff
wellbeing, staffing of our CLC, teacher/staff retention and recruitment, mental health resources,
and district wide safety. Budget 19-20 school year is up there as well.
We will need to set up a special meeting to go over the superintendent’s evaluation in February.
This would also be a good time to discuss the process for setting up special meetings and work
sessions moving forward. What does the board expect from Mrs. Matis and me in regards to
reminders to members for special meetings? We can add this to the agenda next week if the
board feels the need to do that.
We do have the flu going around the district. We have advised our custodial crew to do deep
cleaning and set off some of the disinfectant sprays for each building. We are encouraging staff
and students to stay home when ill and use proper hand washing techniques to keep it from
spreading.
