Masafumi Maita

There was an international radical movement of using photography in the contemporary art in 1960s-1970s. Masafumi Maita initiated to use photography in 1971. In the same year he awarded a grand prize at the 6th International Young Artists Exhibition. Moreover, having received a scholarship, he stayed in Paris from 1971 - 1973. We can see a certain distinction in his works those days; photography and matter are always assembled. Although he grabbed was in the spotlight by using as he employed photography in his practice, his fundamental interest was always in matter and spatial aspect that was captured in an image. He believed that definition of the matter is affected by situations and circumstances as we see in the most of his works in 1970s. “Situation” series particularly draws a comparison between matter and image/ represents a relation between matter and illusion. Along with connecting matter and photograph in spatial way, “Situation”, evokes moreover a notion of time. Maita’s work is composed of two elements ― the photograph and the object. At

beginning, he added some figure drawn by hand onto the image of photo, for instance, straight lines to the sea-scape. From 1974, he has changed his idea to introduce real objects in his work. One of his works is such that there hanged a big panel of photo showing indoor-scene of a waste house on wall and both a real lamp and several buckets arranged before the panel as if the image of photo and objects were continued. But the essential of his idea is a consciousness of time, I believe. Spatially the image of photo and real objects seem to be continued, but we feel to face to two different time ― one is present and the other is past. The real objects always show the present time and the image of photo the past instance. We don’t know how long is a time difference, but this difference is decisive. Combining the photo and real objects, the artist makes our time consciousness vividly. The difference between the image of photo and the object is the difference between the perception and the memory. In other words, Maita’s work consists of two elements ― the perception and the memory. The artist

has named all of his works “situation” and this means the situation is made by these two elements. Relation and contradiction between both two create new situation, and Maita’s work shows a process of this creation.
