Reflection Statement (ENS 434)
Promoting Physical Activity and Healthy Eating course was very educational, fun and a
favorite of mine. This class showed the epidemiology of certain current health issues such as
obesity, the medical costs associated with it and ways of preventing it. The information was
covered clearly and class discussions were a regular activity in each class. The instructor used
valid data and statistics to make a statement and show that there is a need for health
professionals.
In this class I learned that each client is unique, has a special story and reason why they
are seeing a health professional to make a change. I learned to communicate properly and come
from a place of compassion and know that anything I say or do will make an impact on my
client. I was introduced to the stages of change and learned about specific ways to communicate
with each client.
As a part of the class assignments, we worked on a topic of debate as a group and went
against another group. We were analyzed by our peers and the winning group was selected. This
was a very fun experience for me. I learned some helpful methods to convince people on a
certain topic that interests me. Body language, clothing, confidence, knowledge and many other
important factors play a role when speaking about a topic of interest. I also worked on a group
project with three other students. We made a large trifold poster and printed colorful fliers to
support our presentation. We spend a good amount of time preparing for the presentation and
were able to present successfully and answer all the questions from our “investors”.
The information I learned in this class will help me to be an educated professional in the
field and explore the unique ways to communicate with clients in a diverse population. I also
have a better understanding of the epidemiology of certain diseases and can look for creative and
effective ways to serve my community.
