The most successful children know that their family supports them and shows an interest in their day to day school life. Establish routines at home. Children thrive on orderliness and adapt to classroom rules more easily. Talk to your child about what they are doing at school. Encourage them to discover things for themselves. Read! Read! Read! Studies show this is the single most important thing parents can do to help their children achieve. Do read with your child for 15 minutes each day. Have a place to keep all communications from school Remind them to pack their school bags with care. Help your child get organised to do homework. Make rules about homework. Decide with your child on a good time to do homework and stick to that schedule as much as possible. Try to keep noise down during study times. Reward and praise your child’s effort as well as his/her accomplishments. Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep. Feel free to contact your child’s teacher with any questions or concerns you might have. Keep a sense of humour about the whole school scene. Don’t forget to laugh…school days are filled with funny incidents. Share stories from your school experience. Laugh when your child tells you his or her jokes — s/he will appreciate it and learn from it.

Laughter and Learning - your child’s best ticket to a happy and successful future!

It’s good for our minds! Research suggests that printing letters and writing in cursive activate different parts of the brain. Learning cursive is good for children’s fine motor skills, and writing in longhand generally helps students retain more information and generate more ideas. Studies have also shown that children who learn cursive rather than simply manuscript writing score better on reading and spelling tests, perhaps because the linked-up cursive forces writers to think of words as wholes instead of parts. The cursive style continues to develop through close links with the Literacy Framework in the Upper Primary Division. All handwriting activities are undertaken as class activities for the following reasons: • to develop effective and efficient pen hold • to develop the habit of concentration which is crucial to good handwriting • to encourage the development of cursive script, neatness and legibility • to provide the class teacher with the opportunity to help assess individuals' progress and monitor areas requiring reinforcement. Children copy into their books, applying the same techniques, closely monitored by the teacher. In some lessons, it is also appropriate to practice speed-writing through the use of dictation (usually written at the back of their book), which also helps them to think quickly and remember spellings.
