Santa Fe Independent School District v. Doe (2000) Before football games, members of the student body of a Texas high school elected one of their classmates to address the players and spectators. These addresses were conducted over the school's loudspeakers and usually involved a prayer. Attendance at these events was voluntary. Three students sued the school.

National Constitution Day

The first ten amendments to the Constitution of the United States are called The Bill of Rights.

An amendment means a change.

These ten amendments protect individual freedoms by describing rights the U.S. government cannot take away from the people.

The First Amendment guarantees freedom of speech, religion, press, and assembly, and the right to petition the government.

The Second Amendment guarantees the right to bear arms.

The Third Amendment guarantees soldiers cannot be quartered in any house. Quartered means to occupy. U.S. soldiers cannot stay in your house without your permission.

The Fourth Amendment protects people from unreasonable searches and seizures.

The Fifth Amendment guarantees each person the right to a fair trail (due process), no one can be charged twice for the same crime (double jeopardy), people in the U.S. cannot be forced to incriminate themselves (tell on themselves), and people in the U.S. cannot have their property taken by the government without payment (eminent domain).

The Sixth Amendment guarantees a person certain rights when they are charged with a crime. This is called due process. The sixth amendment guarantees things like the right to a public and speedy trial, a fair jury, cross examination of witnesses, and an attorney.

The Seventh Amendment guarantees the right to a jury in a civil proceeding.

The Eighth Amendment protects against excessive bail, excessive fines, and cruel and unusual punishment.

The Ninth Amendment reserves other rights to the people. It basically says the U.S. Constitution cannot be used to deny people rights.

The Tenth Amendment reserves States Rights. It says powers not defined by the U.S. Constitution or forbidden by it become powers of the states.
