What is Hajj?

Hajj is one of the Fifth Pillar’s of Islam and is a very important part of the Islamic faith.

All physically fit Muslims who can afford it should make a visit to Mecca, in Saudi Arabia, at least once in their lives. Every year around 2 million Muslims go to Mecca.

They visit a place called the Ka’bah in which is in Mecca. The Ka’bah was built by Ibrahim (Abraham) (pbuh) and Isma'il (Ishmael) (pbuh) after Allah (God) had ordered them.

It takes 5 - 6 days to complete Hajj.

What do Muslims wear?

They wear very simple white clothes. The men wear seamless long white robes made from 2 sheets of white cloth, while the women wear plain white dresses with scarves. These are to show the equality of all people in the eyes of Allah (God).

While the pilgrim’s are on Hajj, they cannot shave, cut their hair, clip their nails, and wear deodorant or perfume. They can not swear, fight or argue or kill any living thing.

What is Eid ul Adha?Eid-ul-Adha is a 1-3 day celebration and in Muslim countries is a

public holiday, it marks and celebrates the end of Hajj. Eid-ul-Adha celebrates the occasion when Allah (God) appeared to

Ibrahim (Abraham) (pbuh) in a dream and asked him to sacrifice his son Isma'il (Ishmail) (pbuh)as an act of respect to Allah (God). Muslims believe the devil tempted Ibrahim (Abraham) (pbuh) by saying he should disobey Allah (God) and spare his son. As Ibrahim (Abraham) (pbuh) was about to kill his son, Allah (God) stopped Ibrahim (Abraham) (pbuh) and gave him a lamb to sacrifice instead.

This is why today all over the world Muslims who can afford to, sacrifice a sheep, as a reminder of Ibrahim‘s (Abraham’s) (pbuh) respect to Allah. They usually share out the meat with family and friends, as well as the poorer members of the community.

How do Muslims celebrate?

It starts with Muslims going to the Mosque for prayers, dressed in their best clothes, and thanking Allah for all the blessings they have received.

It is also a time when they visit family and friends and offer presents or money to the younger members. At Eid all Muslims have to give a set amount of money to charity to be used to help poor people buy new clothes and food so they too can celebrate.
