ReleasesAlbert’s Almost Amazing Adventure

by Marty Kelley

Albert’s vacation was amazing—or so he thought. To his friends, his time in Maine was boring. Dull. Lame. They’ve got a much more vivid idea of what Albert could, and should, have done on his trip. But Albert might just have a surprise for his friends. Marty Kelley tells this wonderful read-aloud story in a fresh and imaginative way, contrasting panels of black-and-white charcoal drawings of dull old Albert with bursting-with-color spreads of what Albert’s friends imagine for his summer adventures. Just what did Albert really do during his trip to Maine?

Halfway WildWritten by Laura Freudig Illustrated by Kevin Barry

On some days, there’s just not a good word for the way you are feeling. If your socks are sagging and your pants are wrinkled, what do you call it? Maybe you’re feeling like a turtle. Maybe you’re feeling halfway wild. In this fresh and lyrical picture book, a family’s feelings and moods are imagined through animal traits and behaviors as they make their way through the course of one lazy summer day.

CAROLYN SCOPPETTONEAfter working as a newspaper reporter in Los Angeles, Carolyn Cory Scoppettone moved to small town New England to raise her children. Her new job as a freelance writer allowed time for walks in the woods. The children would race ahead, returning frequently with woodland treasures. Their sheer joy at exploring nature inspired Carolyn to write Hold This! In addition to picture books, Carolyn writes poetry, creative nonfiction, and middle-grade novels. She lives in Montpelier, Vermont, with her husband Greg (a television director), their daughters, Sophia, Anna, and Nadia, plus two cats, one dog, and a puppy.

“By story’s end, readers will smile knowingly as they ultimately realize that like Mika’s walk, childhood innocence is something worth savoring.”—PAMELA BRILL, The Talking Walnut

Hold This!Story by Carolyn Cory Scoppettone Illustrated by Priscilla Alpaugh

A girl and her father go for a walk, experiencing all the sights, sounds, smells, and feels of the woods. As Mika asks her father to hold each and every one of her found treasures, he urges her to be a big girl and only take what she is able to carry. With every step and stumble, Mika finds both the wonders and treasures of nature, and the ability to pick herself up after a fall. But the real discovery for both daughter and parent comes at the end, when they both realize that the truest treasure is a hand to hold.

In Book Two of The Five Stones Trilogy, Chase, determined to fulfill his promise to find the unifying Fifth Stone, finds the elusive Captain Nate and brings him back to the island of Ayda, where one realm is burning and two others are under siege from Dankar’s dark forces of Exor. Meanwhile, Knox and Evelyn must trust a mysterious guide to help them find a way back, though each has their own personal struggle to overcome. Mystery of the Missing FoxStory by Tamra Wight Illustrated by Carl DiRocco

The stakes have never been higher for Cooper Wilder. When an accident puts Cooper’s dad in the hospital, Cooper must shoulder some new responsibilities. But he’s distracted. First, he and his friends find a fox caught in an illegal trap on the campground’s land. Then, kits start to go missing from the fox den. Who would want to catch foxes? And why? Cooper, Packrat, and Roy must protect the den, find the kits, and rule out Summer, the new girl who lives across the lake, as a suspect. Juggling new campground duties, feeling guilty over his father’s accident, and desperate to help the fox kits, Cooper must make some tough decisions about who—and what—should come first.

Lies in the DustWritten by Jakob Crane Illustrated by Timothy Decker

In Salem’s dark days of 1692 and 1693, young girls pointed fingers and accused others of witchcraft, sentencing them to torture, or even death. When the cloud lifted, and the accusations were shown to be false, the girls faced little, if any, penalty. Were they sorry? No one knows. But one girl, Ann Putnam Jr., did feel moved to show remorse. Fourteen years after the trials, Ann wrote a letter of apology. This is her story. This searing graphic novel is a wholly unique portrayal of an untold aspect of the Salem Witch Trials. Through the author’s extensive primary research and the artist’s creative re-imagining, the reader is taken inside the head of Ann Putnam, the only girl to apologize for sending 24 people to their death.

Closer All the Timeby Jim Nichols

The residents of Baxter, Maine are going nowhere fast—but not for lack of trying. In this artfully written jewel of a novel, award-winning author Jim Nichols strings together the bittersweet stories of people bound by shared geography and the insular nature of small-town life. The cast of characters includes Johnny Lunden, a well-meaning war veteran with a penchant for the local bar, eight-year-old Ted Soule, who shares a first kiss with the Ophelia-like Nadia, the daughter of his Russian neighbors, and Tomi Lambert, who watches the confused adults around her struggle to accept their fates. With the coastal waters of Maine serving as a backdrop, Nichols explores the nature of connection—hoped for, missed, lost, and found. This novel delivers quick-moving, compelling storytelling with a lasting emotional wallop. You’ll devour it in one sitting, but these characters are sure to linger around the edges of your day like memories of old friends and lost loves.

U.S. $22.95 / CAN $24.95ISBN: 978-1-939017-49-9Fiction, hardcover (DJ), 6 x 9, 176 p.

“Nichols’ spare, plainspoken prose buzzes with emotional grit and tenderness, bringing dignity and vulnerability to alcoholics, poachers, and bullies. Damn Beautiful!”—SUSAN HENDERSON, author of Up from the Blue.

“The characters are powerful, and their struggles keep the reader flying along from chapter to chapter.”—MAINE SUNDAY TELEGRAM

GERRY BOYLELike many crime novelists, Boyle began his writing career in newspapers—“the best training ground ever.” After graduating from Colby College, he knocked around and took a series of odd jobs, with stints as a roofer, a postman, and a manuscript reader. His first reporting job was with a weekly in the paper mill town of Rumford, Maine. After a few months, he moved on to the Morning Sentinel (based in Waterville, Maine). Boyle’s editors swiftly learned that he worked best when left to his own devices, writing about what he observed in the police stations, courtrooms, towns, and cities of Maine.

The Havener Sistersby Ardeana Hamlin

The Havener Sisters follows Abbott’s Reach and Pink Chimneys in Ardeana Hamlin’s collection of novels set in nineteenth century Maine. The story follows the Havener triplets as an unexpected economic crisis gives them a new perspective on their aging lives. When China Havener decides to explore her home state, taking photographs along the way, she does not realize how that decision will alter her life forever. China’s choice prompts her sisters, India and Persia, to make their own life changes, turning these identical triplets into three individuals. The Havener Sisters tells the story of three women who think they have left their best days behind them, only to find that the opposite is true. Hamlin’s latest well-researched and passionate novel will transport readers back in time to the dawn of suffrage and the industrial age in the Northeast.

Straw Manby Gerry Boyle

In this, the eleventh installment of the bestselling Jack McMorrow Mystery Series, McMorrow’s nose for trouble sets him on the trail of an illegal gun sale pipeline linking private gun owners in Maine with a rash of homicides in Boston. Caught up in the action is a young Mennonite farm boy, who is questioning his faith and his future when he falls in with the wrong crowd. Add to this potent mix a run-in with a gang of local

thugs, which leaves Jack’s wife, Roxanne, the target of a violent sex offender intent on exacting his revenge. Never before has Jack faced so many threats on so many fronts, with the most destructive being his own tendency for violence and the havoc it wreaks on those he loves most. In this non-stop page-turner, Boyle is at his best and most provocative.
