Florida. The family alwaysconsidered Texas their home andlater returned there to live.

David attended El JardinElementary school in Brownsville,Texas (1951-1956) then moved withhis family to Homestead, PL. Hegraduated from South Dade HighSchool, June 3, 1963. While inHigh School, he worked part timeat Bill Franklin food store andat Burger King. He earned enoughmoney to buy a Jaguar sports car.He spent many hours makingchanges and polishing the engineto look like a show car.

Richard ("Rick") L. Coonce,of Chagrin Falls, OH, a highschool friend of David describedhis marksmanship: "Dave and Ihunted together both with bowsand rifles. I remember once wewere hunting rabbits with bows, and he had a western styleholster. We jumped a rabbit inthick wood, so we couldn't get anarchery shot off. Dave drew andfired his revolver in a smoothaction that I'd only previouslyseen in western movies. And hehit the rabbit on the run. Ano-ther time, we came upon a snakewhich wasn't bothering us, but askids we never left a snake aliveif we saw one. Dave wanted toshoot it with the bow, but Iprotested that he would miss, soI took aim with the rifle, intending to take the shot assoon as his arrow missed. I wasaiming right at the snake's headwhen Dave's arrow went throughit. I developed a great respectfor his shooting."

PROPOSAL - HIGHWAY MARKER FOR RUCKERSVILLE , GEORGIA

The Rucker Family Society hasdecided on a project to erect ahighway marker in Ruckersville,Georgia. It will commemorate thetown and its founder JosephRucker, known as Georgia's firstmillionaire.

Julius ("Jule") T. Rucker, ofEvans, GA, RFS board member, hasgraciously agreed to head up thisproject. He will obtain thenecessary documents and submitthe forms to the Georgia Depart-ment of Transportation. However, the Rucker Family Society willpay the costs. We ask yoursupport in this endeavor.

A history of the area isgiven in Life of Joseph RuckerLamar. by Clarinda PendletonLamar, 1926, p.17-18: "In 1784the General Assembly of Georgiaset apart two hundred thousandacres of land in Wilkes County tobe settled by Virginians, and inthe last quarter of the 18thcentury, many Virginians weremoving to Georgia. When oneremembers the numerous childrenmentioned in the Rucker wills, one is not surprised to learnthat the state of Virginia becamea little overcrowded with Ruckersand then, in 1785, Pressley,Willis and William Rucker camefrom Virginia to Georgia andlocated in what are now Elbertand Hart Counties. They sentback a good report as to soil andclimate and early in 1786, JohnRucker, fourth in descent from[Peter], came with his wife,Elizabeth Tinsley, from Ruckers-ville, Virginia, to a neighbor-hood in Elbert County, which soonbecame known as Ruckersville,Georgia. He settled on a tractof land still owned by hisdescendants. *And there, on thefifth day of January, 1788, hisson Joseph was born, and there hespent the seventy-six years ofhis life, and there, on thetwenty-seventh day of August

1864, he died."1Joseph Rucker was the son of

John4 Rucker (Cornelius3, Thomas2,Peter1) and Elizabeth Tinsley.Joseph married in January 1812,Margaret Houston Speer, daughterof William, who lived at CherokeeFalls, on the Savannah River.

The following excerpts on thehistory of Ruckersville, GA, weretaken from publications at theElberton public library.

Ruckersville was a smallcommunity of 200 in antebellumdays , incorporated December 9 ,1822. It was located along thebanks of the Savannah River inElbert Co. , in the northeasternsection of Georgia. Its historycan be traced back to Virginiaand that time of immigrationwhich began about 1786. . .

In 1827 Sherwood's Gazetteerdescribed Ruckersville, GA, ascontaining "ten houses, sixstores and shops, an academy, anda house of worship for theBaptists . "

Later it became a thrivingtown of 600 or 700 people, fifty?stores, a newspaper, two banks, two schools, and two churches. APrinceton graduate became theprincipal of its academy.

Today there is no sign of theformer village of RuckersvilleThere are no businesses orstores. Only two churches and afew homes remain to remind one ofthe once booming town.

Jule Rucker has contacted theowners of the former Rucker land, descendants of Joseph Rucker. They have given their permissionfor us to place a marker on theirland.
