Section 1: Vision, Mission, Objectives and Functions
Vision The unique perception of nurturing statistics as a unifying discipline, as
envisioned by Professor Mahalanobis, and constantly enriching suitably with time and providing the basic philosophy for formulating the strategy for interlacing and encompassing newly emerging areas of research in all its scientific divisions.
Mission (i) To continue and further flourish as an Institute of excellence,
internationally recognized for conducting pioneering research, both theoretical and applied, in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Quantitative Economics, other related Natural and Social Sciences, and in Quality Management.
(ii) To strengthen and elevate various teaching and training programs of the Institute at undergraduate, post-graduate, and at doctoral level in the above disciplines so as to produce scientists, academicians, and skilled personnel of international standard, for enrichment of human resource pool of the country.
(iii) To contribute in modeling, analyzing, and solving various problems of planning for national development and social welfare and to help the Government in policy making.
(iv) To project the Institute as an international repository of knowledge in Statistical Science and other related disciplines with various emerging applications, and to render services to the community by providing access to such knowledge-base consisting of theory, data, tools and methodologies, analytics, and technical expertise.
Objectives 1. To promote the study and dissemination of knowledge of statistics, to
develop statistical theory and methods, and their use in research and
practical applications generally, with special reference to problems of
planning of national development and social welfare.
2. To undertake research in various fields of natural and social sciences,
with a view to the mutual development of statistics and these sciences.
3. To provide for, and undertake, the collection of information,
investigations, projects and operational research for purposes of
planning and the improvement of efficiency of management and
production.
4. To undertake any other ancillary activities in fulfillment of the
objectives 1, 2 and 3 above.

Functions The Indian Statistical Institute is an institute of national importance by
an Act of Parliament and functioning under the aegis of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Government of India. The Institute is governed by its Memorandum of Association and its functions are to promote the study and dissemination of knowledge of statistics, to develop statistical theory and methods, and their use in research and practical applications generally, with special reference to problems of planning of national development and social welfare; undertake research in various fields of natural and social sciences, with a view to the mutual development of statistics and these sciences; provide for, and undertake, the collection of information, investigations, projects and operational research for purposes of planning and the improvement of efficiency of
management and production; undertake any other ancillary activities in fulfilment of these objectives.
