How does my film opening represent gender? Our Female CharacterOur female character is represented in both modern and traditional ways in or film. Our female character is represented very traditionally on the surface in our film opening. For example her costumes is very feminine (high heels, red lipstick, black dress). This portrays her as an attractive women, whos stereotypical innocence you would not question. However throughout the film we learn that she is in fact the character who murdered Will (male in white shirt), this challenging my past point. Therefore our female character has also been represented in a modern way, as she challenges the typical innocence women have, by murdering a character. She kills Will by using a gun, heard when our film title comes up. This weapon also goes against the stereotype of women as men are usually seen with the weapon - this makes Beth very dominating, as she has control of the situation. There are a range of shots which also represent her in a modern way. For example in the bottom picture we see our character Will. Here he is looking up at her, showing us that she is towering over him, and therefore appearing as a threat and also dominating - this goes against the traditional representations of women. However in the top image, we see her smiling, and looking very feminine - this is a traditional representation of females as she is seen as very attractive, and her smile appears as innocent. In the office scene of the film we cut back to a close up shot of her, this is because she is laughing at Will in a patronising tone. This also challenges the modern representation of women as she patronises him confidently, which was not seen very often as men are thought of as the dominant gender.

Head MobsterOur head mobster challenges both modern and traditional representations of men.Our head mobster/gangster is called Tom, and also on the surface he represents a traditional gangster character (as seen in our inspiration The Godfather). He is dressed in a full suit and holds props such as whiskey and a cigarette. These are traditionally seen with males more than females, therefore coincides a traditional representation of male gangsters. Tom however challenges a traditional representation of men as well, this is because the female character is the murderer and the dominant character rather than Tom. Although Tom is the head gangster and instructs the female character to kill Will, she is in possession of the weapon and therefore has control over Tom. This is therefore a modern representation of men as he seems dominated by a female.Tom spends the least amount of time on screen in this film, and this at first appears odd as he is head gangster. However we learn that he has in fact instructed the female character to do the killings for him, and therefore seems in control.

Murder VictimThe character who gets murdered is called Will. He works for the head mobster Tom, however has made an error on a deal, which leads to his murder.During the office scene, Will is sat opposite from both the female and Tom. Therefore he is being dominated by both as a two shot of them shows their connection, and the close up of Will shows his isolated position. Both the female and Tom are holding both alcohol and cigarettes, but Will is not. This again points out how isolated from them he is.Will is a modern representation of males in my film opening even though his costume challenges this. He is dominated by a female as she kills him, which is very modern as males are seen as the more dominant gender.
