EGHS Parent Newsletter 9 2nd Quarter - October 2019
Flu/ColdInformation:Influenza (the flu) is a serious illness. Symptoms can include sore throat, headache, fever, cough, nasal congestion/sneezing, fatigue, muscle/body achesandweakness. Childrenmay also feel nauseated, vomit or have diarrhea. Coldsymptoms are very similar to flu symptoms, however theprimary differencebetweenacoldandthefluisthattheflucomesonverysuddenlywhereaswithacoldyoursymptomsoftencomeongradually.Ifyoususpectthateitheryou or a loved one has the flu, it is important to seek medical evaluation forproperdiagnosisandtreatment.
Transmission:Thefluandcoldarebothcausedbyvirusesandbotharetypicallyspreadviadroplet transmission.Thismeans thatwhenpeople thatare infectedwith the flu or cold virus and they are coughing and sneezing, they releasedroplets into theair that canbe inhaledbyotherpeoplewhocan thenbecomeinfected.Whensomeonecoughsor sneezes, thedroplets that they expel into theair can travel up to20 feet atspeedsof25-50milesperhour.Thesedropletscanalsostaysuspendedintheairforhours.You can also get the flu from contaminated surfaces (for example - doorknobs, faucets, telephones). When youtouch a contaminated surface and then touch your face, this allows the virus to enter your nose ormouth andtransmititself.Keepinmindthatvirusescanliveonsurfacesforupto24hours.
Treatment for the flu includes increasing water intake, potential antiviral medication (if diagnosedwithin 48hours of onset) and plenty of rest. Antibiotics are ineffective against the flu and are sometimes prescribed topreventasecondaryinfectionrelatedtoacoldvirus.Beforeusingoverthecountercoldorflutreatments,pleaseconsultwithyourmedicalprovider.
