Quarter 3 Extra Credit: Organic Chemistry Due: THURS. APRIL 5 th ORGANIC NEWSLETTER For this assignment, you will create an education-based newsletter about organic chemistry. Your newsletter must contain 5 sections (described below) and be in a newsletter format. There is no one single format to use, so you can Google “newsletter formats” for examples. Please understand this is the assigned format - not a poster, powerpoint, etc. You can EMAIL ME your final product OR PRINT it and turn it in. Be creative. The 5 sections below are required. That doesn’t mean you are limited to them. You can always add more to make your newsletter more interesting. Newsletter Sections 1.) Q & A This section must include at least three questions & answers. Imagine that you are the newsletter editor and students are writing to you with their questions. A sample question might be: “I’m trying to draw the structure of O2 with a single bond, but I can’t get the right answer. How do I figure out how to draw it?” Your answers should be detailed- not just a word or two. 2.) Education Corner Briefly “teach” a topic here. For example, explain how to calculate formal charges or use pKa values to assess acid - base reactions. Remember, whenever you teach something, pictures and examples are invaluable!! 3.) Obituary Write a brief obituary of a famous organic chemist (you may use the same person you chose for your project). This should be about one paragraph in “obituary format” and include a picture. You can take some liberties here and embellish some information to make your obituary interesting; however your obituary should contain biographical info as well as what they were famous for. 4.) Molecule of the Month Pick an important organic molecule (again, use Google or another search engine for ideas), show its structure, and highlight key information about it- why does it deserve to be “molecule of the month?” 5.) Editor’s Choice You select one other feature of your choosing. This might be an editorial, focus on an organic chemistry related career, etc. The possibilities are numerous! But pick something interesting as well as education based. Comics are fun, but not “educational” enough for this section.

ORGANIC NEWSLETTER

For this assignment, you will create an education-based newsletter about organic chemistry. Your newsletter

must contain 5 sections (described below) and be in a newsletter format. There is no one single format to

use, so you can Google “newsletter formats” for examples. Please understand this is the assigned format- not

a poster, powerpoint, etc.

You can EMAIL ME your final product OR PRINT it and turn it in.

Be creative. The 5 sections below are required. That doesn’t mean you are limited to them. You can always

add more to make your newsletter more interesting.

Newsletter Sections

1.) Q & A

This section must include at least three questions & answers. Imagine that you are the newsletter editor and students

are writing to you with their questions. A sample question might be: “I’m trying to draw the structure of O2 with a

single bond, but I can’t get the right answer. How do I figure out how to draw it?” Your answers should be detailed-

not just a word or two.

2.) Education Corner

Briefly “teach” a topic here. For example, explain how to calculate formal charges or use pKa values to assess acid-

base reactions. Remember, whenever you teach something, pictures and examples are invaluable!!

3.) Obituary

Write a brief obituary of a famous organic chemist (you may use the same person you chose for your project). This

should be about one paragraph in “obituary format” and include a picture. You can take some liberties here and

embellish some information to make your obituary interesting; however your obituary should contain biographical

info as well as what they were famous for.

4.) Molecule of the Month

Pick an important organic molecule (again, use Google or another search engine for ideas), show its structure, and

highlight key information about it- why does it deserve to be “molecule of the month?”

5.) Editor’s Choice

You select one other feature of your choosing. This might be an editorial, focus on an organic chemistry related

career, etc. The possibilities are numerous! But pick something interesting as well as education based. Comics are

fun, but not “educational” enough for this section.
