1 2019 IS THE YEAR OF KINDNESS AT WPS _____________________________________________________________________________ Issue 16 – 23 October 2019 WELCOME BACK Welcome back to Term 4. I trust everyone has returned relaxed after the holidays and ready to commence what is inevitably a busy term. We have another exciting 10 weeks ahead with many events involving our students. Final progress reports will be written and given to families at the end of term. We have started this week with our usual message to our students – “Effort Brings Success” and aim for personal best in everything you do. An important focus for the school in Term 4 will be on transition. The Kindy Start children will be moving into “Big School” and the Year 6 children will be moving into high school. This is exciting and I am sure a nervous time for both parents and children. We look forward to celebrating these important milestones as the term progresses. On behalf of the school community I would like to congratulate Mr Brown and his wife on the safe arrival of their son Marcus who was born last Wednesday. Mum, dad and bub are doing well. We look forward to meeting him. Mr Brown will be on leave for two weeks. Mrs Eland will be teaching 5B until he returns. CANTEEN I am happy to announce that Catering for School owned by Marilyn Powell has accepted the tender to operate the school canteen for the next two years. Marilyn already runs a number of school canteens and comes highly regarded for her service, quality food and professionalism. The canteen will continue to offer online ordering with Flexischools and they will be launching a new menu that complies with the Healthy Schools Strategy. It will begin operation on the first day of the 2020 school year, Wednesday 29 January and will be managed by Raelene Hill. We look forward to working with Marilyn and her team. INNOVATION The Woodport Robotics team under the guidance of Mrs Lawson and Mr Brown have been working hard in readiness for the FIRST LEGO League competition. Here they are assessed in the following areas: core values, a research project, robotics and how well they communicate and share their ideas. Issue 16 – 23 October 2019 WELCOME BACK Welcome back to Term 4. This is exciting

and I am sure a nervous time for both parents and children.

The research team has been busy conducting surveys, collecting information and talking to experts about local environmental and social problems. Currently, the students are developing an innovative solution called the Hab-A-Seat to address a lack of seating in the community and improve thermal comfort. This structure creatively combines a vertical wall garden with a public bench. It is a self-sustainable and SMART technology design that can be modified to suit a variety of public spaces. Furthermore, the abundance of carefully selected plants aids in reducing air temperature, attracting pollinators, and keeping the Central Coast green.

Last term, the team were invited to present their solution to Mr Chris McLean, Principal Strategic Planner for the Central Coast Council and last week they presented to Lauren Riley, the Marketing Assistant from Erina Fair. The students displayed exceptional confidence and entrepreneurial skills as they pitched their solution and displayed an understanding of the issues well beyond their years.

This week the team is meeting with some council architects who will develop their concepts and turn them into plans that can be used in the production stage. Ms Riley was so impressed with the students and their innovative concept that they have been invited back to Erina Fair later next month to present their Hab-a-Seat solution to the head of marketing, with the prospect of finding a way to build the students’ design. Today young people are preparing for a very different world from the one we know. There is a growing demand for enterprise skills in the 21st Century and the FIRST LEGO competition provides a platform for students to learn, develop and apply these skills to real-world problems.

We are incredibly proud of the students’ work ethic and commitment. These students have demonstrated that with passion, dedication, creativity and determination, anyone, regardless of age, can have a voice and initiate change to create a better world.

The team requires an engineer to discuss the structural soundness of the seat. If anyone is available could you please contact Mrs Lawson or the ladies in the front office.

Congratulations to the team: Kirra M, Bree S, Ciarn S, Griffin W, Massimo B, Anna H, Taylor H, Issy B, Riley D, Toby F and Liam A.

The robotics team will be presenting their innovative concept at the next 3-6 Assembly, this Friday at 2:10pm. Parents and community members are welcome to attend.

CHORAL FESTIVAL Today we have 21 students performing in two shows (3:30pm & 7:30pm) at the Central Coast Choral Festival at the Art House in Wyong. They have been working hard all year with Mrs Minter and I look forward to watching them perform as part of a massed choir tonight. SCHOOL SUPERVISION HOURS I would like to remind parents and carers that students are supervised from 8:25am every morning. Lately we have had many children who have been dropped off well before that time, some as early as 8:00am. This is a safety issue as teachers are not required to be onsite until 8:25am and students arriving before this time are without appropriate supervision. If you start work early please arrange for childcare before 8:25am to ensure the safety of your child. SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT DAY Last Monday afternoon the staff participated in our final extended school development day for the year. At this meeting staff engaged in CPR and anaphylaxis training led by the Surf Lifesaving Association. This means the final day for the year for our teaching staff will be Wednesday 18 December, the same day that all children finish. BARLOW FAMILY FUNDRAISER On Friday 8 November the Erina Rugby League Club and some families from our community are organising a fundraiser for the Barlow family. Tickets are $40.00 and are available from Erina Leagues Club, by direct deposit or from Lisa Rademaker. If we have any businesses that are able to donate prizes or services for the auction please contact the ladies in the front office or see the flyer for further details. DAY FOR DANIEL This Friday, students are invited to wear red to support the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. ‘Day for Daniel’ is a National Day of Action to raise awareness of child safety, protection and harm prevention. It is about educating children and adults to help keep kids safe through child safety and protection initiatives. It aims to help empower our children to ‘No, Go, Tell’ if they feel something is not right. ‘Day for Daniel’ is also an opportunity for Australians to make a statement that crimes against children are not acceptable in modern Australia. Students will be completing stranger danger lessons this week that are appropriate to their stages. K-2 will be revising the “No Go Tell” strategy and 3-6 will be learning about strategies to keep them safe while on the internet and when using social media. Please take this opportunity to reinforce the message of stranger danger with your children. KISS AND DROP ZONE - PARENTS This area is designed for quick entry and exit and operates under the same conditions as no parking zones. Please read the following points very carefully so that everyone can pick up and drop off their children quickly and safely.

• The Kiss and Drop Zone is indicated by the white line. There is enough room for 4-5 cars at one time.

• If you are the first car, please move all the way down to where the white line begins as this allows for the following cars to move in behind you.

• You ARE NOT allowed to park, leave your car and go into the playground. You are required to remain in or within 3 metres of your vehicle.

• You may stop to drop off or pick up for a maximum of 2 minutes in this zone.

• When you arrive in the afternoon keep in mind children will be waiting in the designated area near the crossing. Children will be directed to the car by a staff member when the car has come to a stop.

• Please time your pick up - the bell rings at 2:50pm and children need time to pack up, leave the classroom and safely exit the school grounds. Please do not arrive at 2:40pm and park in this area. There are other areas in the street designated for this.

• Operating hours for these rules are: 8:00am – 9:30am & 2:30pm – 4:00pm.

Judy Boland Principal KINDY START GRADUATION As our Kindy Start program draws to a close, with only two more weeks of lessons, please save the date for our graduation assemblies. These celebrations of learning will be held in week 5 on Monday 11, Tuesday 12 and Wednesday 13 November. The children are working hard to prepare a short item and we will present a pictorial review of the course showcasing the activities we have shared. Each graduation will commence at 9:15am with students being dropped off at their classroom and families proceeding to the school hall in readiness for the festivities. Older siblings are welcome to attend the formal part of the ceremonies. It will conclude with a brief morning tea for our Kindy Start students and their families.

KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION EVENING Our Kindergarten Orientation evening will be held on Wednesday 13 November commencing in the library at 6:00pm. This is an important opportunity for us to support families in their transition to school. The evening will cover a number of topics and issues to help parents/carers develop their understanding of the procedures for the start of the school year and provide general information which will support families when their child begins next year. WOOSH will be providing childcare for preschool aged children so parents are able to sit and listen carefully to the information provided. Please contact WOOSH on 4367 8666 if you would like to take advantage of this free service.

EFFORT BRINGS SUCCESS CERTIFICATES Effort Brings Success (EBS) Certificates are an important part of Woodport’s recognition of students’ effort and excellence. To receive an EBS certificate, students need to return three merit certificates. Students need four “Effort Brings Success” (EBS) certificates to earn their plaque. On Monday 2

December a special assembly will be held to recognise those who have earned a plaque.

Please note the cut-off date for Effort Brings Success plaques to be presented this year will be Monday 11 November. There is a lot of organising involved in making the plaques so this time is needed to ensure they are ready on time for the assembly. STUDENTS LEAVING We are currently in the planning phase for 2020. If you have a student at Woodport who is NOT in Year 6 and will not be returning to us next year, please let us know. The number of students at our school

Nominees have been selected by their peers and will now prepare a speech to present to the 2-6 student body on Thursday 14 November. SRC MUFTI DAY The SRC (School Representative Council) organised a pyjama mufti day on the last day of term to raise money for Stewart House. Thank you very much to all the children who came to school in their pyjamas and who contributed with a gold coin donation. The day raised $360.00. KINDERGARTEN NEWS Last Monday, the Kindergarten classes visited the Erina High School Agriculture plot. This was a very exciting adventure for all involved. The students were able to see and hold many newborn animals and were given the opportunity to ask questions in regard to food and shelter. The Kindergarten students had a fantastic hands-on morning working with students from the Erina School Learning Community. This was a perfect culmination to our Science Unit – Living Things.

GRANDPARENTS DAY Grandparents’ Day for Kindergarten students will be held on Tuesday 29 October. Grandparents are invited to come along to the school and share in some special time with their grandchildren. The morning will begin at 11:30am in the school hall for morning tea, followed by a performance and a visit to your grandchild’s classroom where you will participate in a lesson. The day will conclude with lunch. You may bring a picnic or purchase lunch from the canteen (this must be pre-ordered). Children have created a special memento that may be purchased for $4.00. We hope that all grandparents will be able to come along and share in this memorable occasion. VOLUNTEER DRAW WINNER

The September volunteer draw took place on the last Friday of term 3 with Shirley Keen, a grandmother who assists in KV, being the lucky recipient of the $20.00 gift card from Erina Leagues Club. The next draw will take place on Friday 25 October. All you need to do to be eligible for the draw is to write your name in the book of entries at the front desk when you sign in as a volunteer. We thank Erina Leagues Club for supporting the school and our volunteers. We really appreciate their support.

GREETINGS FROM THE LIBRARY Welcome back to term 4. At the end of this term the library will be conducting a major stocktake. All borrowing will stop in week 6 so this process can begin. If you have any library books hiding around your house and they have a Woodport Public School sticker on them, please return them as soon as possible. The last Scholastic Book Club has been distributed to all classes and this is due no later than Monday 28 October. There are some fabulous books in the catalogue that would make perfect gifts and stocking

GOSFORD SELECTIVE SCHOOL GATS DAY Two Year 5 students will be participating in the Gosford High School enrichment day catering for Year 5 students from the Central Coast Region. Students will rotate through a series of workshops held on Friday 25 October 2019. SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Students in KB paired with a 6B mentor during Science and Technology. Year 6 had prepared a lesson sequence using Chromebooks, Google Apps and Lucidchart to teach their younger buddies about how a wheat seed is made into bread. KB students read ‘The Little Red Hen’ to their older buddy and completed a short quiz using Google forms. Together they viewed a PowerPoint about the process of making bread. All students were engaged reading, discussing, connecting, questioning and sharing their knowledge about the topic. After researching, students worked cooperatively to plan and create a digital flowchart showing the process. Part of this process was teaching keyboarding skills, how to use online tools, how to copy and paste images and ensured that the sequence of steps was correct. To evaluate the effectiveness of their lessons, students were involved in a short Q&A time. KB are definitely a bunch of smart cookies as they could answer most of the questions thrown at them. Most impressive was how our Year 6 students planned, created and implemented this lesson with great enthusiasm and success. The care, encouragement and support they showed towards our Kindergarten students is to be congratulated. Well Done Year 6!

THINK before you post…

Stage 3 have been discussing the long lasting effects that unkind and unthoughtful posts/messages can have on another person. We are encouraging our students to “THINK” before they post on social media.

Think once before you act,

think twice before you speak,

and three times before you post on social media.

2020 SCHOOL TRAVEL APPLICATION NOW OPEN Applications for student travel in 2020 opened on Friday, 11 October 2019. Students progressing to year 3 and year 7 no longer need to re-apply if they:

Where a student meets the new distance eligibility, the system will automatically update his or her entitlement. If they do not meet the new eligibility, they will receive an expiry notification via email.

Students who have an entitlement approved under a medical condition which is due to expire will receive a notification advising them to re-apply.

Term Bus Pass holders will receive a notification to re-apply.

If students need to update their information or re-apply, they should go online to https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/updateDetails

HELPING YOUR CHILD AT HOME

Working Memory – How you can help Have you ever walked into a room and found that you have forgotten what you came for? What failed you was your working memory. We all differ in the amount of information we can keep in our working memory and how easily it is lost when we are distracted.

An effective and efficient memory is critical for a child’s success at school. Children are constantly bombarded with new information in multiple topic areas and expected to demonstrate an understanding of this knowledge. Working memory helps kids to hold onto information long enough to use it. It plays an important role in concentration and in following instructions.

Many students have memory problems. They may have difficulty remembering instructions, following multi-step directions or forget what they are doing while they are doing it. When they are reading, they may forget what happened at the beginning by the time they get to the end of the paragraph. It might look like a language or comprehension problem when it is in fact a memory failure.

There are some ways you can help.

• Children may have a better visual or auditory memory. Help them to be aware of their strengths and learning style.

• Help them to use multi-sensory learning. Find ways to write it, read it, say it, hear it, see it, use colour, draw it, move to it, etc.

• Break tasks into small simple steps with short simple instructions. List them on your fingers as you say it.

• Repeat the instructions and have them repeat back to you what they have to do. Eye contact is important. Get down to their level and limit distractions.

• Repetition of new tasks helps to move it from the short-term memory to the long-term memory. Playing memory games can help improve memory as will playing games to drill new skills. Over learn skills until they can perform several error free examples.

• Teach your child to use memory aids; visualize as they read, in math use counting devices such as blocks, number lines or tally marks, use a personalized spelling dictionary, etc.

• Encourage active reading by highlighting, underlining or jotting down keywords as they read. • Write down the steps required to complete math tasks and record all calculations as they are

made.

For more information on working memory read some of Susan Gathercole’s research. Also, there is a free program called Memory Mates that helps to teach memory strategies.
