Principal’s Message Week 11 Term 1
As the term draws to its conclusion I would like to thank the staff of Ben Venue for their dedication and
commitment to the learning and wellbeing of all students. From the office staff who are so very caring in their
approach to unwell students to the teachers who provide such exceptional opportunities for their students, the
staff are second to none. I thank the school community for your continued support and wish everyone a safe
and happy Easter. Students return to school on Tuesday 30 April 2019.
Congratulations
Well done to the Ben Venue Netball Team who competed in the Armidale Gala Day last Friday. The team won
all four of their games and now move to the next round of the competition. Thank you to Mrs Swain who
provided this opportunity for the students.

Denman Abbo, Archie Clark, Luke Whitty, Jared Frost and Elijah Love who were
who were selected in the North West Hockey Team. Congratulations also to
Byron Kollosche, Austin Johns, Jared Frost and Sophie Parsons who were
selected to represent Ben Venue Public School in the North West Soccer Team.
This is a fabulous achievement for the students and our school.

Year 5 Opportunity Class 2020
If you would like to have your child considered for the Year 5 opportunity class (Armidale City Public School)
entry in 2020, you will need to apply on the internet using a valid email address. The application website opens
on Tuesday 30 April 2019 and closes on Friday 17 May 2019. You must apply by the due date.
Notes will be sent home in Week 1 of next term.
Ethics Education
Currently at Ben Venue, students participate in either Special Religious Education or attend the non-scripture
group. From next term, we may have the capacity to offer, in some year levels, Special Education in Ethics as

an option for those students who currently do not participate in Special Religious Education. Primary Ethics is
the organisation approved by the Department of Education to provide Special Ethics Education. Information
relating to their program is available on the Primary Ethics website.
The feasibility of this will depend on the number of students who opt (with parent/carer permission) to attend
Ethics classes rather than the non-scripture group. If your child currently attends non-scripture and you would
like them to participate in Special Ethics Education, please click this link in order to register your interest.

Year 2 Folk Museum My class and I went to the Folk Museum today. At the Folk Museum, they have an old telephone booth
there. They also have crystals there too. There were lots of old carriages in the transport room and
they also have an old bike in there too. In the normal room they have an olden day camera and there is
an olden day house. In the house they have a pink baby crib and a brown coffee table. And they have
an olden day map of Armidale. When we were leaving, we saw 2M coming in for their turn at the Folk
Museum. I liked the trip to the Folk Museum.

I saw an olden day camera. It was nothing like the cameras now. The person would stand in the back
of the camera and the person that would be clicking the picture would stand in front of the camera.
There was a typewriter and when you pressed the letter inside it will get ink and put it on the paper. In
the olden days they had really fancy cups, none of them looked like present day cups. I saw a very old-
en day phone and it had this really cool spiny thing. You put your hand
inside and you let go at the number. It came in white, black and red.

Today, we went to the Folk Museum. We saw old telephones that looked very different to the ones we
have now. There were lots of old carriages at the Folk Museum. There was an old wheel chair and I
saw a little typewriter. There was an old bed and I saw a dining table and a piano. There was an old
phone and you use to open a door and go inside to call someone and you had to spin a dial. There
were very shiny crystals. We went on a bus to get to the Folk
Museum and it was fun going there.

At the Folk Museum I saw a big camera and I looked through it. I didn’t see anything, it was huge and
weird. I also saw four large photos. They were photos of Armidale in the olden days and they were all
different. I was excited to go to the Folk Museum and I went with my class, I didn’t go with my mum. It
was fun at the Folk Museum.

Year 2 Folk Museum Excursion “WOW!” I said as I looked at all the old and fascinating things. There were telephones in all different
shapes and sizes and there was also everything else an old telephone would need.
The next room was the transport room. There were all sorts of carriages big to small, little toy carriages
to big grand ones.
The next room was an old bedroom. There was a four-post bed in the corner and a mirror in the corner
and a chamber pot with blue patterns.
The next room was a kitchen. There was a table on one side and all types of things including a set of
candles. On the other side of the room there was a set of shelves with all types of bottles and packets
with food still in them. There was even a honey jar!
The last room was with suits for the women in the Army who were nurses. One lady was a nurse in
World War I, the other two women were nurses in World War II. One of the women died in the war while
one of the other woman came back very sick and the last woman came home fine. The lady’s name that
showed us around the Museum was Mrs Ward and that was the end of our Folk Museum trip.

Bruuuuuum! Bruuuuuum! Bruuuuuuuum! Ruuuuum! Ruuuuuuum went the bus. My class and I went to
the Folk Museum. First we saw the old telephones. In the next room we went to the cart room and in
there was a BIG CART! I wish I could have the big cart. Next we went to the camera room and the cam-
eras were so big and so cool. Next we went to an old bedroom. The bedroom looked so different from
the
bedrooms we have today. Next was a lounge room. It was very different to the one I have. It had a piano
in it and people don’t really have a piano in their lounge room. Then we went to the old kitchen. They
were very different! Lastly there was a nurses uniform. The uniform was cool then it was time to go back
to school. Bruuuuuum bruuuuumm! The bus was here. Bye Bye Folk Museum!

6W What a fabulous term we have had! 6W students have been extremely busy both working hard in class and taking advantage of the wonderful opportunities on offer. Students have been involved in sporting trials, cricket matches, the School Swimming Carnival and cross country, Opera House Choir and marimba group auditions, dance group rehearsals, a Colour Run, a Science and Engineering challenge at UNE and an excursion to Thalgarrah. There is always something exciting happening at Ben Venue! During our recent trip to Thalgarrah we participated in the ‘Scientist for a Day’ program. Heath, a scientist from the university, came and talked to us about trapping and tracking wild dogs, the use of technology in mapping animals through the landscape and using 700 camera traps for surveying native and feral animals. We also discovered how to set up fair tests when conducting scientific investigations and set up a test to determine which light bulbs are most cost effective to use. Our Geography lessons have been focusing on our connections with Asia and how Australia is connected to other places in the world. Students now have a better understanding of terms such as trade, export and imports, goods and services, international trade and embargo. In research lessons we have been investigating what life is like for children in different Asian countries and also the types of aid Australia provides to its neighbours. Thank you to all parents who came to the recent interviews, it was lovely to meet you all.

Term One Music Report
There have been many excited faces in the Music room this term as we have been joined for various sessions by Briana Merritt, a drummer with 11 years experience. Briana has been sharing her talent and sense of rhthym with students in Stage 3 in particular. Students have certainly gained a lot of knowledge and experience in the area of drumming since she first joined us in the classroom. Students can name parts of a drum kit, use drum sticks correctly and have been practising the 4/4 Rock and 2/4 Half-Time beats. Briana also treated us to some spectacular drum solos and various drumming styles, including jazz, waltz and African drumming on the djembes and bongos! The photos speak for themselves! Thank you Briana, you are a star and we have loved your funky lessons! Meanwhile, the Piccolo Choir in addition to the Junior and Senior Choirs are well into rehearsals for their Eisteddfod songs - performance dates to follow so stay tuned. Turns out these singers are also excellent whistlers and students are adding some percussion to make our songs more fun! The amazing accompaniment on piano of Robyn Bradley continues to inspire us to greater and greater singing.
The Opera House Choir has been selected for 2019 and students have also been rehearsing and listening to our CDs in preparation for our big trip to Sydney in early September. We can't wait to actually sing inside such a famous building and see some of the sights of Sydney while we are there. More information to come next term.

Cricket Report Round 3 PSSA Knockout Competition 2019
The Ben Venue Cricket Team played their round 3 match in the PSSA Knockout Competition last Monday April 1
against Glen Innes Public School at Harris Park Armidale
Ben Venue captain Sophie Parsons won the toss and elected to bowl first.
Once again it was Myles Harris clean bowling the Glen opening batter Emery Levy-Blair in the first over.
Glen Innes then settled in with opener Howie Eastwood and number three batter Carter Ferris batting steadily and taking
the visitors to 1 for 51 off 12 overs.
Ferris was dismissed in the 13th over with a clever catch by Myles Harris off the bowling of Samantha Marshall and Glen
went to the drinks break looking good at 2 for 51.
Ben Venue tightened up their bowling in the next five overs with Glen only able to make a further 10 runs during this
period. Number four batter for the visitors Wade Granin was providing good support to Eastwood before he was run out
for 3 after Jackson Taylor hit the stumps with a direct hit from the outfield.
Eastwood then began playing some excellent cricket shots all around the ground after the Ben Venue bowling became a
little way-ward. He eventually retired on 43 after a very controlled and patient innings. After their 25 overs Glen Innes
had scored a respectable 96 runs.
Best bowlers for Ben Venue were Myles Harris 1 for 9 off 5 overs and Samantha Marshall with 1 for 4 off 2.
The Ben Venue opening batters Jared Frost and Jackson Taylor looked settled early scoring 14 runs off the first 2 overs.
Frost looked in fine form striking the ball well, including a 6 over square leg, but was out in the third over caught and
bowled by Emery Levy-Blair.
This brought Ben Venue Captain Sophie Parsons to the crease however she was dismissed for 0 after she failed to
capitalise on a loose delivery and spooned the ball to Howie Eastwood off the bowling of Levy-Blair. Ben Venue
appeared in trouble at 2 for 25.
Alex Harris joined Taylor at the crease and they both batted carefully defending any good deliveries and scoring from
any loose balls.
Harris was eventually caught for 8 and Ben Venue were 3 for 85 off 13 overs.
When Myles Harris joined Taylor the home team only required 13 runs to win and Harris wasn’t wasting any time hitting
a 4 from the second ball he faced.
Ben Venue reached 3 for 98 off 15 overs with Harris
and Taylor both not out on 5 and 18 respectively.
Best bowlers for Glen Innes were Emery Levy-Blair 2
for 15 off 3 overs and Jock Maxwell 1 for 20 off 2.
Ben Venue now go on to play Moree Public School in
round 4.

Netball Gala Day Last Friday, our Ben Venue Netball Team played in a Gala Day at Lynches Road. With a big day ahead of them the team knew they would have to work hard with 4 games at 40 minutes each and that they did. The team won the first game, which was a knockout, against Guyra, 25-0. The next few games were for experience and fun but the team did well wining all these games. Our team won against Sandon 22-0, Armidale City 8-7 and Newling 18-4. I would like congratulate all the team on their team spirit, sense of fair play and work ethic. I am very proud of you all!
