Principal’s Message Week 7 Term 4

Thank you to the Year 6 teachers, Karen Watson, Rebecca Hunt, Lyn Burgess and Rebecca O’Hara along

with Cam Pryce for providing our students with such a wonderful experience during their excursion to

Canberra last week. I know the teachers thoroughly enjoyed the experience as I’m sure did all of the

students.

Congratulations

Well done to Sophie Parsons and the NSW PSSA Cricket Team who defeated Victoria in the final of the

School Sport Australia 12yrs and under Cricket Championships last week. Sophie was opening batsman

and scored 58 runs not out. A great effort! We are very proud of you Sophie.

Toys at School

Many students have been bringing beyblades to school to play with. They are proving to be a very popular

lunchtime activity and students are getting lots of enjoyment from these. Please be mindful that sometimes

these can become lost, stolen or broken. In these instances it becomes very difficult to locate them or to

prove who they belong to, particularly when they all look the same. Students should bring these to school

at their own risk.

School Hats

Ben Venue is a sun safe school and encourage the wearing of broad brimmed hats as a means of sun

protection. Of late there have been a number of students rolling these hats up to make them look like

cowboys or pirate hats. This is not ok as the hats then don’t protect the neck. Please discuss this with your

child.

Year 7 2020

The commencement date for Year 7 students attending Armidale Secondary College has been changed.

Students will now commence on Thursday 30 January 2020. Students are expected to be at school by

8:40am on this day.

Mufti-Day Fundraiser

To throw our support behind our local Rural Fire service we will be holding a mufti-day on Friday 29

November. Students are encouraged to come dressed in red and yellow or as a firefighter and are asked

to bring a gold coin donation on the day.

There is also a donation tin located at the front office for those wishing to donate to the Rural Fire Service.

This fundraising initiative is a response to the numerous students who have requested that as a school we

somehow support local families and firefighters.

The Fathering Project

Ben Venue Public School wants to start building its own community of dads! We want to know if Ben Venue Public School dads and father figures would like to sign up as members to a Dads Group and if so, if they would like to be a Dads Group Leader! Dads Group Leaders organise activities and working with their Dads Group to create special memories for dads/father figures and kids. As a Dads group member or leader, you will be supported by The Fathering Project Team with resources and assistance with event planning, as well as a bunch of other features. If you're interested in signing up as a member or a leader to a Ben Venue Dads Group, or just want to find out more, please email The Fathering Project Schools Program Coordinator [email protected] or call 1300 FATHERS.

2020 Planning

Planning for 2020 classes has begun. If you intend on leaving Ben Venue at the end of the year, please

notify me in writing ASAP. I have had a significant number of requests for enrolment next year and it helps

knowing in advance if I have places available. When planning classes for 2020 many factors are

considered. Whilst I will consider parent requests these cannot always be accommodated. If you have a

specific request please submit in writing by tomorrow (requests after this time will not be considered).

Please be aware that not all teachers remain on the same grade. There will be some staff movement next

year. Students will not be asked to nominate other students they would like to be in a class with. Teachers

are best placed to make decisions regarding the learning of students and will consider many factors when

organising classes. I have full confidence that teachers place student learning and student wellbeing at the

forefront of their decision making.

1G Where has the year gone? Even though there are only a few weeks of the year left to go, there

has been no slowing down in 1G…

We have been working on our narrative writing skills, eating a few treats as part of our current Science

unit ‘Bend it, Mix it, Stretch it’ and participating in drama activities where quite a few of us are really

enjoying the limelight!

Our recent Rewards Afternoon was an enjoyable free choice play time that involved construction,

dancing and relaxation activities. An all-round fun time was had by all.

Students have been reflecting on how much they have achieved this year and viewing their work samples from the start of the year. It has been very special to see the ownership they have taken over their learning.

1D I can’t believe we are reaching the end of the year. I have enjoyed watching 1D grow physically,

emotionally and intellectually.

With the recent bushfires, many students in 1D were discussing the impact they have had on our wider

community. Students have decided it would be a nice idea to write letters to our firefighters to show

their support and let them know that they are doing a wonderful job!

In Science, students have been investigating the physical properties of household materials. We have

been using our scientific skills to predict, record and reflect on what happens when different materials

combine. Who knew that when you mix rice bubbles, cocoa, icing sugar and copha, put them in the

fridge to set, they would turn into delicious chocolate crackles! Students are definitely enjoying

hands-on, engaging experiments this term.

I would like to thank the families of 1D for your continued support throughout the year. Enjoy the

remainder of the term and I wish you all a happy and safe holiday.
