(PTC) celebrated its 39th anniversary by strengthening the company’s commitment to the protection of the marine environment and the empowerment of youth through education and leadership development, demonstrating the PTC Group’s evolving thrust of moving people, moving lives and moving the world. These new initiatives were announced last February 19 after the anniversary mass officiated by Fr. Ogie Orpiada of the National Shrine of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Reflecting on the company’s mission, Fr. Ogie reminded employees that “as long as you are moving people, you are touching people and you are leading them to productivity. Moving lives then becomes the end product of your mission. And when your service is a fruitful service it will mean development for the world which for today’s times is translated to peace.” “This time of the year, let’s take a step back and think of how can we rededicate ourselves to our mission as members of the PTC Group,” said PTC CEO Gerardo Borromeo, speaking to employees after the mass. “There are so many things for us to be thankful for here at PTC and everything that we have achieved is a result of our dedication to our mission. May we, as a group of companies, remain committed to moving the lives of people that reinforces our ability to move the world.” Protecting the Marine Environment He added, “Our core business has always been in shipping and it will forever be in shipping. For shipping to succeed it needs a platform, it needs a medium and that medium is water. 70% of our world is made up of water. So how do we protect that water; how do we protect the basis by which we can continue to move lives and the world?” Answering this question, PTC-CSJ Foundation President Carla S. Limcaoco announced the Foundation’s support of the Ecobricks Project. An Ecobrick is a plastic bottle packed tight with used, clean and dry plastic to create a building block for constructing modular furniture, garden spaces, walls and even full scale buildings. Ecobricks are a collaboration-powered technology that provides a zero-cost solution for individuals, households, schools and communities to help stop pollution and start envisioning a healthier way of living with the cycles of life. “One of the advocacies of the PTC-CSJ Foundation is the protection of the marine environment,” said Ms. Limcaoco. “We are very concerned about pollution in the oceans that will affect our coral reefs, fishing industry, tourism, and our ability to trade so the impact on the world is very serious. Through the Ecobricks Project, we can help minimize plastic waste and prevent these bottles from being thrown into the ocean.” Developing Capabilities for Tomorrow Cognizant to the appointment of PTC Founder Ambassador Carlos C. Salinas as International Maritime Organization (IMO) Ambassador, the company also announced its co-sponsorship of History Meets Present (HMP) Convention 2018, a series of forums and workshops for maritime students and professionals which aim to promote leadership and skills development responsive to the new and modern advancements of the maritime industry. “As an IMO Ambassador, my purpose is to promote maritime careers among the youth and make them understand that this is a serious industry where responsibility and accountability are critical. And we don’t just want to touch base with those who have already graduated or are already in maritime schools. We want to increase awareness of the importance of maritime and the seafaring profession among students in their elementary and high school years to encourage them to pursue a future in shipping.” As part of the anniversary celebration, PTC Group employees and Global Maritime Professionals (GMPs) enjoyed a host of fun activities and treats throughout the day. A free photo booth and Pick-A-Prize Game was prepared for GMPs who were also able to avail of free health consultation, BMI measurement, blood pressure reading and blood sugar screening through the “Monday Health Day” organized by the PTC Family and Crew Relations in cooperation with AXA Philippines. Employees meanwhile were serenaded with live acoustic performances and were treated to free snacks and exciting raffle prizes during their lunch and afternoon breaks at the Mainsail Café. From Balanghay Students to Global Maritime Professionals Two cadets from the Project Balangahay Senior Maritime High School Program are now sailing onboard Grindrod vessels as Ordinary Seamen, attesting to the competency, skills and employment-readiness of the program’s graduates. OSD Jilgo Menguez joined IVS Sentosa in December 2017 while OSD Cristian Edol has been assigned to IVS Kawana this January 2018. Both are graduates of Capitol University in Cagayan de Oro, one of the three pilot schools of the program. James Vizen, another Balanghay graduate from Gil Montilla National High School in Negros Occidental, has also passed Grindrod’s application process and is slated to go onboard in the 2nd Quarter of this year as Wiper. Eight other graduates of the program are also scheduled to join various cargo vessels as ratings this coming March. At least 60% more graduates are targeted to be given employment onboard by 2018.
