Head of School Report (2010)

2010 was another successful research year for the School. Total external research income was over $6m, a little over half from ARC and NH&MRC and the remainder from a variety of government, philanthropic and private funding bodies. Further expanding the School’s large number of externally funded research fellowships, Justin Harris was awarded a Future Fellowship. Our higher degree students also sustained the high rate of completions achieved over the last few years with 21 PhD and 22 MSc degrees awarded.

The School’s academic staffing remained stable, with the addition of only one new academic staff member, Dr Laura Corbit, who relocated from the Gallo Institute in San Francisco.

Student enrolments continued to increase, particularly at the undergraduate level. Although beneficial for the School’s budget, the increased numbers have put pressure on both the physical resources of the School and University, and on teaching and administrative staff.

Three long-anticipated refurbishments were completed or initiated over 2010. The new Psychology Clinic in the Mackie Building initially planned over 3 years ago, was finally completed. The time and effort involved in this project are very well justified by the outcome – a state-of-the art clinical training facility that is both substantially larger and vastly more professional and aesthetically pleasing in its ambience than the previous facility. The new space in the Mackie Building also provided the opportunity to relocate most of the academic and professional staff associated with clinical training to newly refurbished accommodation. The area they vacated was then refurbished to accommodate the ever-expanding Centre for Medical Psychology and Evidence-based Decision-making. Finally, a long-overdue refurbishment of the office and laboratory space on the upper floor of the Badham Building was begun towards the end of the year. As well as enhancing the staff and student accommodation in this area, this development includes a very well-equipped proteomics laboratory and a psychophysiological laboratory to house EEG recording equipment. These infrastructure projects have freed space in the School’s main buildings providing opportunities to make new academic appointments and create additional laboratory space. As part of these plans, the McCaughey Chair of Psychology was advertised at the end of the year to attract an outstanding researcher and academic leader who can contribute to the School’s further development over the next decade.

Thus, over 2010 the School successfully sustained and enhanced the momentum established over the past five years. These achievements depend on the commitment and skills of our professional staff – the IT/technical team ably led by John Holden, the student administration staff in both the General Office and the Clinic, Sandra Cheng and Julia Ning who manage our complicated finances and other administration needs so conscientiously and efficiently and Sadhana Raju who took on a new role as Manager of Teaching Quality in 2010 in conjunction with her oversight of all our marketing activities. The School’s success is also testimony to our outstanding academic staff and postgraduate students. I am very proud to lead such a vibrant, successful and collegial team.

Professor Barton L. Anderson Research Interests I conduct research into perceptual organization, with a focus on surface perception. The structure of the visual world is created by the interaction of light with surfaces. All of our information about objects in the world arises from the structure created by surfaces. Research in my lab is designed to understand the nature of the computations and mechanisms involved in recovering the structure and material properties of surfaces. We are particularly interested in the computation of 3D shape, surface reflectance (lightness and colour), and the material properties of surfaces. Grants Anderson, B.L. (2008-12). Professor Sally Andrews

Research Interests My research is based in cognitive psychology but integrates theories and methods from the domains of computer science, philosophy and neuroscience – the fields that define the discipline of cognitive science. As an individual researcher, and in collaboration with students and researchers from a range of disciplines, I have used a variety of methodologies to investigate how both healthy individuals and people suffering from psychiatric disorders attend to and analyse words and sentences. The central focus of my research has been on lexical processing and its relationship to reading skill: how do skilled language users represent and retrieve their knowledge about the words; how do these cognitive capabilities develop; and how does lexical processing contribute to reading skill. My research has focused primarily on English, but I have also collaborated in research projects comparing speakers of different languages to determine how the characteristics of different writing systems, and their relationship to phonology and semantics, influences language processing. Grants Harris, I., Andrews, S. and Hayward, W. (2008-10). The ingredients of conscious identification. ARC Discovery Project Andrew, S. Professor Alex Blaszczynski Research Interests • Pathological Gambling: Research suggests that 0.6% to 5% of adults meet criteria for problem and

pathological gambling. I have advanced an integrated pathway model incorporating cognitive, experiential and biological factors describing the aetiology and three possible subtypes of this condition. Current research is directed toward the development of a screen to identify specific pathological gambling subtypes, and to fully understand the construct of the disorder and cognitive belief structures that maintain persistence in gambling. The effectiveness of warning signs in moderating irrational cognitions and gambling behaviour is continuing to be evaluated, in particular as it relates to Internet gambling.

• Perceptions of Gambling Harm: Why do gamblers persist to gamble despite negative consequences? To answer this question, I am exploring perceptions held about the nature of gambling harm to determine if there are differences in the way pathological as compared to recreational gamblers view the severity and impact of their behaviour on significant others.

• Mental Models of Risk: In an associated study, I am exploring mental models held by gamblers to determine if they hold differential perspectives of risks toward the behaviour that may increase their vulnerability to pathological gambling. This data will provide important information on responsible gambling educational campaigns by identifying how gamblers interpret or misconstrue the potential for gambling to be a risky or addictive behaviour.

• Parkinson’s Disease and Pathological Gambling: Recent studies have implicated dysregulation of dopaminergic neurotransmitters in the pathogenesis of pathological gambling. Reports of episodes of pathological gambling emerging in response to dopamine agonists in patients suffering Parkinson’s disease have added weight to this hypothesis. I intend to carry out a prevalence study of pathological gambling among patients suffering Parkinson’s disease followed by in-depth interviewing to establish the precise relationship between dopamine agonists, pre-morbid gambling and psychological morbidity, and pathological gambling.

• Impulse Control Behaviours: Impaired control is the central feature of this category of repetitive behaviours. However, the role of impulsivity and the specific reinforcement derived from behaviours that are associated with negative consequences remains unclear. I am planning studies that will explore the similarities and differences in traits of impulsivity and cognitions between various impulse control disorders.

• Internet: Internet addiction is becoming a growing concern. I am currently exploring the relationship between emerging technologies and addictive type behaviours, and comparing the similarities of psychometric measures completed on-line versus paper and pencil with respect to the disclosure of sensitive substance use behaviours.

• Gambling Treatment Clinic: I have recently taken over the role of Director, Gambling Treatment Clinic. To evaluate the effectiveness of treatment interventions for this disorder, staff are participating in the conduct of a randomized controlled outcome study evaluating cognitive therapy, cognitive-behavioural therapy and imaginal desensitization in the management of problem gambling.

Associate Professor David Alais Research Interests I conduct research into unisensory perception, either auditory or visual. Auditory research is done in close collaboration with Assoc. Professor Carlile’s Auditory Neuroscience Laboratory in the School of Medical Sciences, allowing access to sophisticated auditory stimuli and signal processing, and to sophisticated virtual auditory space (VAS) technology. Other research in the lab focuses purely on visual processes. A major visual interest focuses on how the brain resolves visual conflict between the eyes, as when the eyes receive different images, giving rise to 'binocular rivalry' in which the brain's conscious state alternates between perceiving the image in one eye and perceiving the image in the other eye. An overview of the state of this burgeoning field can be found in a recent book by David Alais and Randolph Blake: "Binocular Rivalry", MIT Press (2005). Grants Alais, D. & Carlile, S. (2007-2011). Associate Professor Pauline Howie Research Interests My research interest is in metacognitive, pragmatic and social influences on children's event memory reports, with application to children's eyewitness testimony. I am currently conducting research on inconsistencies in children’s responses to repeated questions about past events, with funding from an ARC Discovery Grant. One strand of this program is pursuing my interest in the impact of social and pragmatic factors on repeated recall questions, while a more recent strand focuses on retrieval induced forgetting: the effect of selective rehearsal (via repeated questioning) of information about a past event on the inhibition of memory for non-rehearsed information about that event. I supervise postgraduate and honours research in these areas, as well as in the area of individual differences in predictors of suggestibility. My interest in these phenomena lies in the theoretical implications for understanding social and cognitive influences on memory development, as well as the practical implications for determining appropriate ways to question children in forensic and other contexts. I also supervise doctoral projects in related forensic areas such as bullying, and children’s participation in divorce. Grants Howie, P. Associate Professor Caroline Hunt Research Interests While my primary research interest was for a number of years adult anxiety disorders, I have shifted the focus of my research to child disorders, particularly the prevention and treatment of anxiety and depressive disorders in early to middle adolescence. For example, a 5-year NH&MRC-funded randomised controlled trial targeting anxiety and depression in adolescence was completed across 20 secondary schools in Sydney. This study evaluated whether an intervention conducted wholly within the school sector, using school staff, would prevent children who are at risk from developing anxiety or depressive disorders. The results indicated that there was little difference between conditions at the 2-year and 4-year follow-up on self-reported symptoms, and no difference on diagnosis or health care use. We concluded that outcomes associated with indicated prevention programs led by school staff may not be as strong as those produced by specialist mental health staff. Current projects include the supervision of doctoral-level research that is examining whether the addition of a peer interpersonal-relatedness intervention will enhance the effects of the Resourceful Adolescent Programme, which has been shown to build resilience and prevent the onset of depression in adolescence. This project is supported by an NH&MRC Postgraduate Research Scholarship. Over the past several years, a significant program of research has been developed with a focus on school bullying, using a clinical psychology perspective. Studies that have been published or are in progress include (1) a funded randomised controlled trial across six schools that evaluates an educational intervention to change attitudes towards bullying and discourage bullying behaviour, (2) an investigation of the role of ethnic minority identification in school-based bullying; (3) the investigation of specific risk factors of being bullied in a sample of children seeking treatment for an anxiety disorder; (4) a pilot evaluation of a targeted intervention focusing on individual factors on the experience of being bullied in anxious adolescent boys; and (5) a funded project to develop a self-report questionnaire of the experience of school-based bullying. Dr Fiona Hibberd Research interests My research focuses on the conceptual testing of theories, concepts, and assumptions from which psychology’s research hypotheses are ultimately derived. It involves those statements in a theoretical system that cannot be tested empirically because they are of a more general kind – they are ‘epistemically inaccessible’. My aim is either to ‘clean up’ these conceptual structures through conceptual analysis or to explain why some ideas are beyond being ‘cleaned up’ and should be rejected. Current areas include:

• The role of metaphysics in Psychology • The history and philosophy of theoretical systems in Psychology • Conceptual issues in Psychology’s methodology • Arguments for/against scientific theism in Psychology

Dr Andrew Kemp Research Interests A major area of research interest is the impact of depression and its treatment on heart rate variability, a robust predictor of future mortality. While the relationship between depression and cardiovascular disease was well recognised; only a small number of studies had examined the impact of depression without cardiovascular disease on measures of cardiovascular function such as heart rate variability. This is an important focus because factors concomitant with cardiovascular disease may be influencing the relationship between depression and cardiovascular function. My research indicates that depression without cardiovascular disease reduces heart-rate variability, and that a variety of antidepressants do not reverse the observed reductions (Kemp et al., 2010. Biological Psychiatry;), emphasising the need to consider aggressive cardiovascular risk reduction strategies in patients presenting with, and being treated for depression. This article was published in Biological Psychiatry – a leading international and peer-reviewed journal in psychiatry – and led to published correspondence, an invited review and media commentary within the first 12 months of publication highlighting the impact this research outcome made. A complementary area of research interest is the neurobiological specificity of depression and anxiety, on which I have published a number of seminal articles. This is an important research area because prior studies have tended to focus on these disorders in isolation using questionnaire and behavioural methods. Furthermore, there is significant debate over whether the mood and anxiety disorders should be collapsed into a class of emotion disorders or whether they should be distinguished from each other in the next edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), the basis on which psychiatric disorders are diagnosed. In 2008 and 2010 I published work examining the specificity of frontal brain electrical activity in non-clinical and clinical participants with depression and anxiety (Mathersul et al., 2008. Emotion; Kemp et al., 2010. Biological Psychology;). Results indicate that depression and anxiety is associated with unique brain function profiles despite substantial overlap of symptoms. These findings were published in Emotion and Biological Psychology, two leading international and peer-reviewed journals in psychology. In 2009, I conducted key components of a study – including experimental design, data collection, interpretation of results and writing of the manuscript – which isolated differential gene–brain–behaviour pathways in depression and anxiety. This study was published in Molecular Psychiatry, the highest-ranked journal in the field of psychiatry, and has already attracted many citations. Dr Fiona White Research Interests My research interests include the empirical identification of the predictors and maintaining factors of prejudice within a socio-cognitive-motivational framework. Once target variables are identified they can be integrated into interventions to effectively reduce implicit and explicit prejudice. Two target variables of current interest include cooperative contact and dual identity recatgeorisation. The outcome of my prejudice reduction research includes healthier, fully functioning individuals.

More recently, I have integrated my research and teaching interests together to focus on the scholarship of teaching of psychology. Within this domain I have examined students' feelings and attitudes towards group work and its assessment; I have evaluated modes of lecture delivery and their effects on student satisfaction and performance and measured the educational and navigational aspects of elearning techniques such as WebCT. Most recently my colleagues and I have developed constructive feedback strategies to effectively reduce student plagiarism amongst first year psychology students.

Dr Laura Corbit Research Interests In order to adapt to its environment, an animal must be sensitive to the consequences of its actions and be able to modify its behavior in order to gain access to desired commodities while avoiding events that are harmful or aversive. It is the flexibility of the instrumental or goal-directed components of human behaviour that allows us to develop new behavioural strategies to control events in our environment and satisfy our needs. The adaptive quality of this flexibility becomes most clear when these processes break down as they do in a number of psychiatric disorders including addiction. The goal of my research is to provide fundamental information about the behavioural and neural determinants of goal-directed action and the transition to automatic/habitual performance. This work will also provide considerable insight into the development and maintenance of addictive behaviors and may aid the development of treatment strategies to reverse such behaviors. Dr Karen Croot

Research Interests I am interested in how people are able to produce fluent speech, and in acquired disorders of speech production. My research focuses on the processes of phonological encoding and articulation described by cognitive theories of spoken word production. I primarily study these processes by investigating the speech and language impairments that can result from dementia, stroke, or traumatic brain injury, although some of my research also involves unimpaired speakers producing tongue twisters or learning to produce foreign language sounds. I am also studying the nature of the disorder in acquired apraxia of speech, foreign accent syndrome and primary progressive aphasia, and speech pathology interventions for these disorders.

Dr Marc de Rosnay Research Interests I study the development of children's emotional competence and their emotion understanding. From infancy to school entry, children make remarkable advances in their capacity to negotiate emotionally challenging situations, share their emotional experiences and understand other people as emotional agents. Whilst development brings increasing emotional autonomy, children remain deeply dependent on the structures that support them, and each family affords different opportunities to explore and integrate emotional experiences. The majority of my research centres on variation in the emotional competencies and emotion understanding of children. Some aspects of this variation undoubtedly originate in constitutional differences between children (e.g., temperament), whereas other aspects have a social origin. By studying variation between children and the worlds in which they find themselves, it is my belief that we can open a window onto the mechanisms underlying emotional resilience and emotional disturbance. To equip children for the emotional challenges they will face is one of the greatest responsibilities of parents and those caring for children. How children will meet these challenges is ultimately in their own hands. Grants de Rosnay, Zadro & Hunt. (2008 – 10). Dr Karen Gonsalkorale Research Interests My research explores the cognitive and motivational underpinnings of intergroup perception. I am currently investigating the ways in which people think about their groups and how these cognitions influence intergroup relations. Specifically, this research focuses on awareness of one's multiple group memberships as a precursor to positive intergroup relations. Other research explores intergroup biases that people may not personally endorse or even be aware of having. I am interested in understanding what causes these biases, whether people can control them, and how they influence behaviour toward members of other groups. Dr Hamish G. MacDougall Research Interests Objective Assessment of Incomplete Vestibular Compensation This project aims to improve the quality of life for a significant number of patients with Unilateral Vestibular Loss (UVL) by investigating the mystery of why some 30% of these patients compensate poorly to their peripheral sensory problems, such that serious symptoms including vertigo, nystagmus, oscillopsia, postural instability and locomotor dysfunction persist indefinitely, whereas many other similar patients compensate well. In the first part of the project we have been searching for real physiologically significant and objectively testable differences between well-compensated and poorly-compensated UVL Patients. Our strategy has been to develop new and affordable testing equipment for the objective assessment of vestibular function. We have chosen two of the most successful of these systems to assess vestibulo-spinal reflexes (balance), and vestulo-ocular reflexes (VOR). We then deployed this equipment to new testing environments and trained our collaborators to test a large number of patients and normal volunteers. With the help of these collaborators we will be able to test a large number of patients in a wide range of environments and have the best chance to detect objective markers of incomplete vestibular compensation. (http://www.psych.usyd.edu.au/staff/hamish/) Head-eye coordination during vehicle operation – ARC Road accident and mortality rates are disproportionately high in the young (15-24) and older (75+) age groups. This project aims to measure, analyze and compare the head-eye coordination strategies of these groups with those of more proficient drivers in order to identify behavioral strategies that are associated with their various levels of performance. Objective functional assessment of these behavioral strategies is now possible using our portable equipment and methods for measuring 3D eye, head, and vehicle movement. This project will lead to educational material that describes and teaches affective driving strategies. (http://www.psych.usyd.edu.au/staff/hamish/) Human Aerospace Laboratory - collaboration with Dr Steven T. Moore The Human Aerospace Laboratory, funded by NASA, the National Space Biomedical Research Institute, and the NIH, primarily conducts research into the effects of spaceflight on neurological function in humans. Our current projects include the development of an analog of the effects of spaceflight on sensorimotor function (gait, balance, gaze) utilizing electrical stimulation of the vestibular nerve, how spaceflight affects a pilot's ability to land the shuttle, and assessment of the effects of long-duration spaceflight on an astronaut’s ability to operate machinery. We are actively involved in translating techniques and technology developed for our NASA experiments to Earth-based applications, such as ambulatory assessment of gait in movement disorders (Parkinson's disease and normal pressure hydrocephalus) and a study of early autonomic failure (as observed in the pupillary reflex) in patients with Chagas disease in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. Professor Margaret Foddy Research Interests Social psychology deals with the intersection of society, groups, and individuals. My view is that individuals cannot be understood outside of the culture and societies and families in which they live, and are interdependent. My current research is concerned with a range of questions which I see to reflect this stance:

• Trust in strangers in social dilemmas. Together with colleagues in Australia, Japan, and Europe, I have been examining how people decide to place trust in others, when they are forming new relationships, and there is little information about the other person. This work is in contrast to much work suggesting that trust takes a lot of time to develop, through many successful interactions. Our work starts from the premise that trust is most needed when a person takes a risk by placing his or her fate into the hands of another.

• Status processes in small groups. This topic is a classic in microsociology, but always rewards a researcher with new questions. I work from a framework called status characteristics and expectations, that is a useful way of looking at a diverse range of phenomena, such as gender bias in hiring and promotion; the role played by non-verbal cues in determining the status structure of small groups, and even the importance of dress in impression formation.

• With students, I have done many studies of the attribution of blame to victims and perpetrators of domestic violence. My current interest is in cultural and societal differences in what kinds of behaviour observers regard to be “provocative”, because this is a major factor in assigning blame to victims. This work employs vignette methodologies.

• Development of cooperation and competition in children. The determinants of cooperation in social dilemmas has been a topic of interest in many disciplines for decades, and many of the findings there seem relevant to children.

The brief summary above indicates that I use experimental methods in much of my work. My teaching in philosophy of science has lead me to an ongoing interest in the logic and justification of experiments, and in criticisms of the experiment.
