Keep moving with exercise and wellness programs and services

The National MS Society understands the importance of physical activity and is working hard to increase exercise and movement opportunities chapterwide, but we want to make sure you’re aware of what’s already available.

Exercise and wellness classesWe partner with health and wellness facilities to provide classes specifically designed for people living with MS. Instructors receive specialized training and customize classes to

best meet the needs of participants. For listings of MS classes by state, see pages 18, 21 and 24.

If you’d be interested in a class, but don’t see one in your community, contact Jeannie at [email protected] or 800-582-5296 (option 2).

Financial assistanceThe National MS Society offers financial assistance related to exercise and wellness needs. To learn more about financial assistance or to request an application, see page 29 or call 800-582-5296 (option 1).

Promising treatments for MS Studies show that early and ongoing treatment with an FDA-approved therapy can reduce future disease activity and improve quality of life for many people with multiple sclerosis. The National MS Society’s medical advisors recommend that people with MS talk with their health care professionals about using these medications and about effective strategies and treatments to manage symptoms. If you or someone you know has MS, please visit nationalMSsociety.org or call 800-582-5296 to learn more.

Sponsorship of Society programs or events does not connote the National Multiple Sclerosis Society recognizes superiority in products or services provided by the sponsoring entity over other entities providing like or similar products or services.

Studies continue to show the benefits of exercise for people living with multiple sclerosis. MS exercise class participants like Judy Hull are living proof.

The Upper Midwest Chapter has partnered with the New Hope,

Minn., YMCA for more than 13 years, providing water exercise to people in nearby communities.

Judy has participated in the water exercise class since January 2005. Her doctors have told her they’re amazed at how strong she is. She attributes her strength, stamina and endurance to water exercise.

In January 2008, Judy began volunteering as the class instructor. The YMCA trained her in life guarding, CPR, first aid, automated external defibrillation (AED), oxygen administration and human anatomy. She said leading the class is her way of giving back to the YMCA and the National MS Society.

Judy continues to participate not only because of exercise benefits, but because she enjoys the camaraderie. The group also goes out to lunch every Tuesday and Thursday after class.

For information on how to join or start an exercise class in your area, contact Jeannie at 800-582-5296 (option 2) or [email protected].

What if everyone affected by MS — people living with the disease, their family and friends, health care professionals, care providers and community members — could connect with one another in one place? What if we could defy this disease with the very thing it seeks to destroy: connections? And what if, by connecting our knowledge, our hope and our experiences, we could gain a new understanding of how to move forward?

Connect with other people affected by MS at an Upper Midwest Chapter MS Annual Conference, to be held this fall and winter in Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota.

nLearn more about the National MS Society, the progress we’ve made and what’s in store for the future.

nHear from MS experts about ground-breaking research, recently approved disease-modifying therapies and what’s in the pipeline.

nMeet Chapter President Holly Anderson and board members, and listen to Society staff discuss accomplishments and highlights from the past year.

nPlus, help us recognize volunteers, fundraisers, donors and other extraordinary leaders in the MS movement.

AdvocacyAre high costs keeping you from seeking MS care or treatment?

Many people living with multiple sclerosis benefit from disease-modifying drugs to maintain their quality of life. However, these can be unaffordable due to high costs.

Reducing roadblocks to MS treatment is a priority for the Upper Midwest Chapter, and we need your help to build awareness around this issue. Tell us how high cost has prevented you from seeking care and treatments you need. Contact Jenna at 612-335-7981 or [email protected] with your story.

Plus, save the date for MS Day at the Capitol, where you can share your story with your state legislators and raise MS awareness.

MS ConnectionMake meaningful connections and access the most up-to-date resources.

Multiple sclerosis destroys connections. It disconnects the mind from the body and people from each other. But what if we could defy this disease with the very thing it seeks to destroy: connections. Would we share more knowledge? More questions? More answers? More hope? Maybe, by connecting enough small victories, we could win some really big ones.

MS Connection — a new online community that’s all about making meaningful connections when, where and how you want — provides easy access to the best content and resources the MS community can bring you. You’ll learn about the topics that are most important to you, connect with people you want to connect with and have expert MS information right at your fingertips.

Visit MSconnection.org, complete your community profile, find new connections, join and start groups and discussions and more.
