If you’re just managing, you’re notThere’s no question that information is what keeps your business going and gives it a competitive advantage. Data use is exploding and data centres need to expand to cope with the demand. But at some stage you have to ask yourself some questions: What’s the cost of storing this data? Can I afford to have my IT department tied up managing it? And will I be able to find and produce information to comply with evolving legislation?

Although IT budgets are being slashed, the demand to have accurate data always on hand is increasing. That’s why more organisations are looking to the cloud for help. Some of this may seem familiar to you:

• because of mergers and acquisitions the IT landscape is becoming more complex and harder to manage

• different software and firmware levels have become a maintenance liability

• limited data centre space, power and cooling capacity• applications are not working as well as they should• challenges driving IT transformation programmes to

introduce new technologies and/or operating models• different IT processes which make managing and

securing information almost impossible• few skilled IT people• confusion when it comes to costs.

If this is what’s giving you a headache and keeping you and your IT department up at night, BT Advise Compute can help. We can change the way your business works by helping you get the most out of your existing technology, recommending solutions to improve business efficiencies and providing the support needed to run it. We’ll show you how to respond quickly and effectively, to take advantage of trends such as virtualisation, cloud computing and mobile technology.

All of which, if used correctly, can make sure you build a more competitive and profitable business, that’s also less costly to run.

Facing the challenge of managing multiple suppliers, a leader paper manufacturer wanted to move to one provider for their network and IT infrastructure management. They wanted a supplier who was capable of taking an “end-to-end” approach. Using our unique mix of infrastructure skills and solutions in both network and IT, we assessed and designed the right solution for them. Improving their infrastructure efficiency not only helped reduce costs but also gave them the architecture they need for innovation and flexibility.

A quick start to a more efficient organisationMost businesses are supported by IT and in some cases it gives them a competitive advantage. So the condition of your most important IT systems is crucial, especially if you want to react quickly and outperform the market.

To make sure that you take advantage of having the right technology in the right areas of your business, we at BT Advise Compute have created the Quick Start. It’s a carefully designed mix of consultancy, professional services and tools. We’ve tailored it precisely to what today’s multi-site or international organisations’ IT departments need.

The Quick Start highlights any areas for improvement. Then we make a plan that will make those improvements and help your business move smoothly into the cloud. The result will improve the efficiency of your data centre infrastructure, and that will mean less management time.

The Quick Start lives up to its name, and gets a fast overview of your business, its goals, and the context it operates in. Once that’s established, we get our experts to look into the issues you’re facing and use their vast experience to predict what you may face in the near future. We then work out the best plan of action that will get your IT fit for its purpose.

So how does all this happen and how long does it take? The BT Advise Compute Quick Start has two, short duration levels. The level one engagement will give you a clearer picture of your company’s current IT set up, find out where you want to be, and then analyse the gaps that are causing you the most problems. The level two engagement focuses on a virtualisation health assessment, giving you feedback and an action plan on how ready your targeted business applications are for the cloud.

Level one Quick Start - engagement processThe level one engagement takes three to five days and involves interactive workshops with senior managers and other business stakeholders. During this time, BT consultants will work through all the important areas of your company’s IT in a structured way, using the BT Advise Compute Quick Start evaluator tool.

This includes asking questions about your company’s:

• strategy• data centres - including questions on sustainability

and green IT• servers• storage• network• client services - including virtual desktop infrastructure

and mobile device management, including bring your own device (BYOD) policies

• IT service management.

Level one Quick Start – outcomeYou can expect to get a clear picture of how your company’s IT is currently performing.

• our consultants produce a spider web view of your company’s IT maturity (current state vs. future state)

• we discuss the areas for improvement with you and make recommendations on which solutions you can achieve quickly

• we give you a report on what we have found.

Categories of the IT Maturity Model include:

1. Business / IT Alignment – including strategy, financials and geographies

2. Infrastructure – datacentres, hardware and software

3. People and Organisation - management support, technical skills and customer service

4. IT Service Management – including ITIL and processes

5. Cloud Readiness - including governance.

BT Global Services’ in-house consulting and professional services differentiate them from the competition. BT has done a good job of packaging these services into ‘Quick Start’ engagements in key areas such as mobility, security, UC and IT operational efficiency.” Current Analysis, leading industry analyst house

Level two Quick Start – engagement processThis is really a ‘light’ version of the Advise Compute Assess service. It takes between five and 30 days to complete, and involves workshops and interviews with senior management and IT stakeholders. It concentrates on cloud readiness and/or IT consolidation and virtualisation.

The process is designed to identify quick wins, for example which existing applications from potentially a very large number, could be moved easily to the cloud (cloud readiness) and give feedback on environments that have already been virtualised but could be further consolidated or improved (virtualisation health assessment).

We do this by using interactive workshops, cloud application rating scorecards and tools like the award-winning CiRBA Workload Analysis software. These help us to:

• see how ready your key business applications are for use in the cloud

• focus on the key areas of consolidation/virtualisation• decide if you need a complete and more detailed

virtualisation health assessment.

Level two Quick Start – outcomeAt this stage you will get a more detailed analysis of your IT. Having established exactly how your virtualisation configuration is performing now, we can recommend improved settings. We also give you a roadmap showing how to consolidate and virtualise the physical server and storage landscape.

The roadmap will include recommendations on:

• which applications to move to the cloud• which platform and service model to use• what changes you will need to make to process, govern

and support your cloud strategy.

Once the Level two Quick Start is completed, the next steps would be to embark on the full Advise Compute Assess service for all applications and environments.

BT Global Services was the most convincing of the worldwide IT companies that competed for our data centre management design contract. Whereas other companies bombarded us with a load of marketing jargon, BT Global Services brought real people and proven processes to the table. They were able to convince us with actual solid examples of their work, especially in mission-critical environments.” Hermawan Thendean, General Manager, Strategic Information Technology Group PT Bank Central Asia Tbk.
