Test batch and test sectionAlways prepare a trial mix to determine the workability and bonding of the modified overlay to the substrate. Prepare a small amount of modified overlay as described below. Apply saucer sized patties 1⁄4” (6mm) thick in an inconspicuous area, and allow to cure for 2 days. Remove patties with hammer and chisel. Inspect of signs for proper adhesion. Concrete with fractured aggregate must be adhered to underside of the test patty. If only laitance is removed, further substrate preparation is required. Examine whether test patties can be stained or dyed if either coloring method is specified.

Surface preparationEnsure that the surface is structurally sound and has cured for a minimum of 28 days. Repair all cracks with WS Epoxy Patching Kit. Ensure that cracks will not telegraph to the surface. Maintain integrity of all expansion joints. New and old concrete should be mechanically profiled. Profile concrete to medium grit sandpaper texture.

Remove all oil, grease, wax dirt, dust, laitance, sealers, release agents and other contaminants which may act as abond-breaker before installing this product.

Mechanical methods are recommended to clean concrete, including shot blasting, scarifying, grinding, sanding, sandblasting and high pressure water blasting.

Contaminants may also be removed by scrubbing with WS:Cleaner Degreaser, followed by thoroughly rinsing andscrubbing with clean water. For the use of WS: Cleaner Degreaser refer to product’s Product Information Sheets. Acid etching is generally not recommended. Do not use unbuffered acid. Do not use solvents to remove contaminants. Do not use sweeping compounds to remove dust. Clean out debris from control joints and tape or mask the joints off to prevent the modified overlay to fill the joints. Use an electric power saw with a masonry blade to bring the control joints through the overlay if necessary. Then fill the joints with WS: Epoxy Joint Fill.

When applying over existing coatings, properly screen and de-gloss existing coatings and test for adhesion and appearance as recommended above.

PrimingDilute one part of Weatherskin: Concrete Modifier with two parts of clean water. Apply the diluted product evenly with a soft nylon push broom. Do not leave any bare spots. Brush off puddles and excess primer. Allow primer to dry clear. Theoretical coverage is 400sq.ft./gallon. Coverage will vary according to surface texture and porosity. Note that primed surfaces, wet and dried, are sticky. Wear baseball or soccer shoes with cleats.

Product use (adhesive mix for rigid foam)Dilute Weatherskin: Concrete Modifier with only 10% water. Mix dry components, finish grade cement or mortar, with diluted Weatherskin: Concrete Modifier. Use the same mixing procedures. The resulting product will be more flexible and adhesive than a standard concrete mixture. Apply with a saw toothed trowel to the vertical or horizontal surface behind your rigid foam board, leaving both vertical ridges and voids, allowing any water that penetrates behind the panel a cavity to escape.

For the Weatherskin:Waterproofing System, and Weatherskin:EIFS (Exterior Insulation Finishing System) a variety of Dupont (DOW Chemicals) extruded polystyrene insulation board products are recommended and warranted by Weatherskin when used in accordance with the full systems. Contact Weatherskin for assistance in determining a proper Dupont insulation board for your project.

DilutingWear protective gloves and goggles to avoid injury from splashes. Seal product containers immediately after use. Always dilute Weatherskin: Concrete Modifier with clean water before mixing dry components. The following table shows the level of modification after dilution.

Note that bond strength, flexural strength, abrasion resistance and compressive strength significantly improve with higher modification. Pay attention to that higher than “average” modified overlays are difficult to stain or dye.

MixingWear protective gloves and goggles to avoid injury from splashes. Surface and atmospheric temperature must be between 10 C (50 F) and 30 C (86 F) during the application and while the overlay is curing. Complete all surface preparations and priming before mixing diluted Weatherskin: Concrete Modifier with dry components. Small amounts of product may be mixed by hand using a trowel. Larger amounts should be mixed with a mixing paddle and a 1⁄2 “ heavy duty drill.

Bagged dry componentsMix dry components with diluted Weatherskin:Concrete Modifier instead of water. For diluting Weatherskin: Concrete Modifier see instructions under the heading “Diluting” above. Add diluted Weatherskin:Concrete Modifier with dry components and mix until the product is lump free. Then check for workability. Repeat this last step until desired workability is achieved.

Site-mixed dry componentsMix sand and cement, typically 2 to 3 parts sand with 1 part Portland cement, according to specifications orpreferences. Instead of water, mix dry components with diluted Weatherskin:Concrete Modifier. For diluting Weatherskin: Concrete Modifier see instructions under the heading “Diluting” above.

Add diluted Weatherskin: Concrete Modifier to dry components and mix until the product is lump free. Then check for workability. Repeat this last step until desired workability is achieved.

Tinted overlaysUse dry colorants only. Pre-mix colorants thoroughly with dry components before adding diluted Weatherskin:Concrete Modifier. Accurately measure and record the amounts of all components used to achieve color consistency between batches.

Coverage1,000 lbs. of dry components cover approximately 500sq.ft. at 1⁄4” thickness.

Setting timeThe setting time of the dry components (unmodified overlay) is generally not affected by the use of Weatherskin: Concrete Modifier.

Curing timeThe curing time of the dry component (unmodified overlay) is generally not affected by the use of Weatherskin: Concrete Modifier.

Clean upBefore Weatherskin: Concrete Modifier has cured, application equipment can be cleaned with water.
