The Troop 20397 Robotics experience Q: What was one of the most interesting things you learned? Nitaya: The importance of making prototypes. Cadence: With coding if you make one small mistake it will not work. Addison: Going to Willamette High School. It was really fun getting to play with the robots. Baileigh: I thought it was really cool learning how to code.

Q: Did you think you girls could be involved in programming? Addison: No matter what gender, everybody can do it!

Q: Would you be interested in doing more with robotics in the future? In what way? Addison: Yes! Cadence & Nitaya: We would like to work more on coding and learn to do more stuff.

Q: What kind of robot would you most like to make or have? Addison: I would like a robot that could clean my room! Betty: Clean my room! Nitaya & Cadence: A fashion stylist. It would listen to your ideas and design an outfit, hair, and makeup for you.

Robotics Competitions are so awesome! We visited the Willamette High School Robotics Lab… by Nitaya and Cadence

ROBOTICS OF THE KIDS’ WORLD 3

We met high schoolers and the teacher that made robots in the robotics club. We really liked getting to drive the robot and control the arm — that was our favorite part. We learned that teamwork and every part of the project/activity is important. A robotics competition consists of stacking cones to get points based on how tall the stacks are and getting cones past certain lines. We liked that when driving the robots you don't need a

driver’s license! We would like to do a robotics competition in the future because it looks like a fun game to play.

My Robot Prototype by Freya

A prototype is a hand-built model of an idea. My prototype is a friendly pal if you need a friend, and it also picks up trash!

eople have 5 senses, but robots can have hundreds of different sensors to collect data. Here are some of them. Complete the puzzle by matching type of sensor to its description!

DOWN 1. A sensor can gather this from air, water, soil

or the atmosphere 2. This sensor tells a robot when it has

bumped into something 3. This sensor can help with navigation 5. GPS (global positioning software) and this

sensor help a robot know where it is 7. Robots use this sensor to keep from falling 8. This sensor could be used in robot hands to

tell it how hard to grasp an object 10. “Ear-like” sensors gather this data

ACROSS 4. This sensor tells a robot how fast to move 6. Cameras gather this data through lenses to

form images 9. Sensors can use echo-location or light

beams to measure this 11. Sensors can help find leaks of ____ or tell

what kind of ___ is in the air

Using Simple Machines Robot technology is built on the concepts of simple machines. Some examples of simple machines:

We made these “grabbers” using levers to connect, extend and contract the “arm” and to reach up and grab fruit roll-ups off the high walls. Simple machines + programming = cool robot!

Building Prototypes

ROBOTICS OF THE KIDS’ WORLD 5

Our robot is supposed to move around, and study life that people can’t study. Like under water or in a desert or the north pole. It is a spy robot that can blend in with its surroundings. It has eyes and lights to study life. It also has a nose and ears. We designed it to look like a camouflaged cat because we wanted it to fit in. It helps other people, so it can ask them what direction a place is, and it can tell them where to go. We also made a remote for it.

We made these simple robot prototypes. First we planned, by having an idea of what we wanted it to do and how we would make it. So someone made a good drawing of the robot and we used that and then we planned out what we would have wanted the robot to do and what parts we would have to put on it to do that. This exercise helped us think about how robots work. We had to look at our picture and look at our goal of something that would do certain things, and figure out what individual pieces would help us produce that. Then we looked at a pile of recycled materials we used to build our robot prototypes, and that helped change the ideas and make them even better.

by Kamaylee, Emily M, Shelby, Cadence and Cassandra

Before an engineer builds a working robot,

they will make a prototype: a model to

show their idea.

Our robot cleans. On it’s hands it has scrubbers so it can scrub the floor and wash dishes. The

robot has feelings and it sees. We made it this way because if someone needs help cleaning, it

would help them. It was interesting to make because we got to pick random little parts from

the table and hot glue them onto the robot. Those parts were hinges, sponges, plastic,

cardboard and pieces of a mop. We wanted it to look human, like an android. However, we were

not able to make that completely happen.

Our robot is supposed to fly like a helicopter. It has a camera for one of its eyes and its mouth is a slot to put things. On its back it has a sensor for motion, and it can tell if something is good or bad. If it is bad it will go after it, if it is good it will leave it alone. We designed it this way because our group wanted it to be able to help the policeman catch things, because sometimes policemen are busy doing other things. I thought it was fun to do because I like to design robots. In school I have been working on a robot app that you can choose a robot and it will take you through the steps in how to design it. I just think it is fun. The model has a bow on top, and the sketch did not. Besides that the design did not really change.

Learning to Write Code Learning to write code was fun. I did not know I could write code before we used the games we found at hourofcode.com/us/learn. In this game you have other people writing the code so you don’t have to figure it all out for yourself, which is good! I liked that I could move the bird and blocks and that the birds were really happy when they got to the right place. I was excited too! I would like to do more games like that, and I want to tell my friends that it can be a lot of fun!

by Baileigh

Emily W on writing code: Q: What would you tell a friend to get them interested?

A: It’s angry birds where you have to fight to get to the end and crack codes. It was a lot of fun.

Q: How did you feel when it did (and didn’t) work when you entered the code? A: I felt excited when it got to the right place, and a little nervous when we made a mistake.

I liked the angry bird game! It was cool to find out that I can write code.
