General Conditions of Competition

General Conditions apply to all sections in the competitions unless stated otherwise. Special Conditions for specific sections appear under the appropriate section in the Prizelist. 1. THE COMPETITION 1.1 A competitor performs an item in a section (numbered 0-978) within a discipline (E.g. classical vocal). A section may be split into divisions if entries are excessive. 1.2 COMPETITOR - A competitor may be one person, or any group of two or more people.

Each group competing in a section must comprise completely different personnel, unless stated otherwise in Special Conditions.

1.3 ONE ENTRY - Only one entry is allowed from each competitor in each section, unless

stated otherwise in Special Conditions. 1.4 REPEAT OF ITEMS - An item by a competitor can only be performed once during the

current competition, within the same discipline, except where special conditions permit otherwise.

1.5 Competitors who have been taught by the adjudicator of their section within the last 12

months are ineligible. 2. ENTRIES 2.1 AGE LIMIT –

Herald Sun Aria – Competitors must be at least 17 and not over 32 years on 31st December of the current year. Dancing Sections – Age will be deemed as at the 1st January of the current year. Calisthenic Sections – The competitors age on 31st December of the current year. All Other Sections - The competitor's age on 1st September of the current year, shall be deemed the age required in the sections specifying age limits.

2.2 ENTRY DATE – Entries must be submitted via our ONLINE competition database on or

before Friday 3rd May. Calisthenics entries to be lodged before Monday 15th April. Play Festival entries to be lodged before Friday 28th June. All entries must comply with the general competition rules at the time of entry. A confirmation will be generated to the competitor of which it is the competitor’s responsibility to confirm all details of the entry are correct. Should alterations be required, a request in writing must be forwarded to the Society. Responsibility for correct entry rests with the entrant. The eisteddfod cannot be responsible for entries lost through failed electronic transmission or incorrectly submitted online via our GENI database.

2.3 LATE ENTRIES will NOT be accepted past the due date for the 2013 competitions.

Due to Royal South Street Society using an ONLINE competition database, we are unable to process or receive ANY entries after the due date. Exceptional circumstances in writing may be considered however will be subject to additional late fees. Late entries are only accepted subject to our final timetabling capacity and program deadlines without obligation. We reserve the right to print ‘late entries’ on a separate listing as an insert in the program or add further extra names to an event listing or particular section.

2.4 ENTRY FEES - No entry will be accepted unless processed online with full payment. Entry fees are shown with discipline section items in the Prizelist. Fees for Calisthenics sections appear at the start of the section. Education schools may submit a purchase order online which must be paid within 21 days. Fees are payable to the Royal South Street Society. Competitors are not entitled to any refund of fees.

2.5 COMPETITORS NAMES - All competitors must submit with their ONLINE entry correct

names, dates of birth and addresses. No competitor will be allowed to compete under any name other than as stated in their entry. A person is only permitted to enter ONCE in the SAME event, except where otherwise allowed.

2.6 NAMES OF PERSONS IN DUOS/TRIOS - In all items where two or three persons are

competing, the name of each person must be given at the time of entry in order for the entry to be accepted and processed correctly online.

2.7 NON ACCEPTANCE - The committee reserves the right to refuse any entry. 2.8 MINIMUM/MAXIMUM - The committee may at its discretion cancel, combine or divide

any section/s. There must be at least 3 entries in a section for it to proceed. 2.9 NAMES OF COMPETITORS IN GROUPS - In all group items, a list of the names of all

people appearing in each item must be handed to the stage manager at the time of registration. A separate list for each item must be supplied to comply with Occupational Health and Safety requirements.

3. ADJUDICATORS

3.1 ASSISTANTS - The committee reserves the right to appoint a co-adjudicator, or assistant, or substitute adjudicator when necessary.

3.2 COMPLIANCE - The adjudicator's decision as to whether or not an item presented or

proposed by a competitor complies with the conditions of a particular section shall be final.

3.3 COMMUNICATION - Communication with the adjudicators, either by competitors,

teachers, or other interested parties during the competitions is prohibited. 3.4 CRITIQUE - A detailed critique by the adjudicator will be provided for competitors in each

section. It may be obtained at the RSSS office at the end of each section, except Calisthenics. See Calisthenic General Rules 1B.

3.5 PRIZE - The adjudicator has the right to withhold any prize. 3.6 SOUND LEVEL - The adjudicator has the right to control the level of any amplified sound

in the auditorium. 4. COMPETITORS' OBLIGATIONS 4.1 COPYRIGHT: For all information relating to copyright of all printed, photocopied,

The Royal South Street Society holds an APRA & PPCA licence.

4.2 INSURANCE - The committee requires all competitors to be responsible for insuring themselves or members against personal injury arising out of participation in the competitions.

4.3 ORDER OF COMPETING - Competitors must compete in the order in which their names

appear in the program unless officially authorised or directed otherwise. If not present when called upon, competitors are liable for disqualification.

4.4 PROOF OF AGE - In any section where an age limit is specified, the committee reserves

the right to ask any competitor, at any time, to provide a proof of age. Any prize money may be withheld until such proof has been provided.

4.5 PERSONAL PRESENTATION - The committee expects behaviour of competitors and

audience to be appropriate to the occasion. Offenders may be removed from the theatre. All competitors are requested to dress neatly and present well on stage. Performances

should be appropriate to the competitors’ age and to conservative community values. Inappropriate language and movements are not appreciated.

4.6 REHEARSAL - No rehearsal or practice is permitted on the stage to be used for the

competitions during the currency of the discipline for which the competitor is entered. Any competitor not observing this condition may be disqualified. Dancing championship sections and Calisthenics Free Exercises are exempt.

4.7 WITHDRAWALS - Competitors who do not intend to compete in a section for which they

have entered, must notify the office to that effect at least 24 hours before the time appointed for that particular section. Notification of withdrawal is regarded as plain courtesy to the committee, fellow competitors, adjudicators and patrons.

4.8 REGISTRATION – Entrants (or a representative) must register with the session manager

backstage (or as directed) at least 15 minutes before the start of the session or estimated time as advertised. Please allow time for transport delays or parking. No registrant can be accepted once the session manager has declared the session open.

5. GENERAL ADVICE 5.1 ACCOMPANIST - The society provides an accompanist for the Herald Sun Aria and

Classical Vocal sections. Competitors must provide their own accompanists for Speech, Calisthenics, Dancing sections, Choral and Instrumental sections, Contemporary Vocal & Country Music sections. Official accompanists, if appointed, are not obliged to play poorly presented, difficult or illegible music at sight. A prior rehearsal is always advisable.

5.2 CAMERAS, TAPE RECORDERS, VIDEOS, PAGERS AND MOBILE PHONES. - The

use of these by members of the audience during the competitions is strictly prohibited. Pagers and phones must be turned off while in the auditorium. Offenders may be removed from the auditorium and film or recording destroyed. Performances are copyright. Performances may be recorded by N.L. Harvey & Sons by arrangement on (03) 533 12742 or mobile 0414 966 124 and Winkipop Media. Teachers, coaches, competitors, parents or representatives are strictly prohibited from filming recording or taking photography of any other competitor or performance backstage without consent. Privacy and legal consent must be respected at all times.

5.3 PROTESTS - To be made in writing, within one hour of the disputed competition, and to

be accompanied by a $10 deposit, this will be forfeited if the protest is deemed frivolous. Calisthenics excluded, protests NOT allowed in 2013.

5.4 STAGE - The performing area of the stage is approximately 8.5m wide by 9.2m deep (for solos) or 10.81m deep (for Troupes). Stage slopes towards the audience at 37mm per metre length. Please be aware of this when constructing props. Clearance height below lighting bars is 5m. Fly bars are 11.2m long, and reside at 6m above the stage in their middle position. Thus, flown scenery should have a drop of 6m. The area from the front curtain to the edge of the stage is 800mm. Calisthenics refer to Special Conditions for stage size. An orchestra pit lies across the front of the stage and it has a drop of 900mm to a solid surface. There shall be NO jumping into the orchestra pit as part of any performance. Calisthenics refer to Special Conditions.

5.5 STAGE EFFECTS - No helium balloons, lighted candles, sparklers, lighted cigarettes or

any naked flames are permitted. Approved smoke or fog effects are permitted in appropriate sections. Bubble or snow generators or aerosol sprays are not permitted. The society provides stage lighting and audio amplification.

5.6 STAGE PROPERTIES – Maximum height 3 metres, to sit safely on the sloping stage.

(See 5.4) and may be elevated to sit onto steps or platforms. All props for use in Her Majesty’s Theatre must comply with safety regulations as stated on the RSSS website under “props”. Failure to comply will result in the props being banned. Note also no glass or ceramic items allowed on stage. No staples to be used repairing or assembling props on stage. If hay bales are used, they must be covered in plastic sheeting. Live animals, water, unprotected mechanical or electrical devices, or any dangerous items are not to be used.

5.7 ELECTRICALS – All leads, appliances, lights and stage property lighting using 240 volts

within the theatre, must have a current safety compliance tag. (In service safety inspections and testing to Australian Standard 3760, can be performed by your local A or B Grade electrician). No single insulated cable is permitted to be connected to any Her Majesty’s Theatre power source. This applies to all voltages including extra low voltage (under 32 volts). Refer to website re props and electricals.

5.8 Entrants are expected to be prepared for their event at the time of performance.

5.9 Volunteer event staff and adjudicators are not permitted to advise, interpret or vary any rules, conditions, or any aspect of the conduct of the competition. The eisteddfod will not accept responsibility for any effect arising from such unauthorised comment.

6. PRIZES 6.1 PRIZE MONEY/MEDALS - Prize money and medals for solo, duo or trio items may be

obtained at the RSSS office immediately after the awards are announced. Certificates may be purchased at the office.

6.2 TIES - In the event of a tie for first prize in any section the first and second prize money

shall be divided equally between the tied competitors. The competitor with the next highest points will be awarded third prize. In the event of a tie for second prize, the second and third prize money shall be equally divided between the tied competitors. Full aggregate points to be allocated in the event of a tie. E.g. Equal first 5 points each. Calisthenics is exempt.

6.3 AGGREGATE PRIZES - Aggregates are determined by adding points assigned to first,

second and third places won in the various sections specified. Points are assigned thus - First, 5 points; Second, 3 points; Third, 1 point. Calisthenic and dancing sections are exempt.

6.4 AGGREGATE TIE - Where a tie for an aggregate occurs, reassessment is made thus - greatest number of firsts to decide winner. If first are equal, then greatest number of seconds decides the winner. Calisthenics section is exempt. If a tie still exists, any prize money will be divided as in prize ties 6.2.

6.5 PERPETUAL TROPHIES - Will be held by the winner for 11 months. It is an expectation that all perpetual trophies MUST be returned to the RSSS after 11 months. All holders of trophies will be held responsible for their safe custody, engraving and return at their own expense. All trophies must be returned in the same condition they were received.

6.6 CRIT ONLY – RSSS reserves the right to allow an item to perform for crit only in the event

there are insufficient entries to meet our minimum requirements to run a section with prize money, or there is deemed to be a conflict of interest as determined by the RSSS committee or adjudicator.

7. RIGHTS OF COMMITTEE

7.1 FINAL DECISION - The decision of the committee in all questions and disputes arising out of, or not provided for, by these conditions, shall be final.

7.2 RECORD - The committee reserves the right to record, broadcast, telecast, video tape or

photograph any item or competitor of the eisteddfod. By submitting your entry you have automatically granted permission for digital images or photographs to be used for promotional or marketing purposes.

7.3 CONCERT - The committee reserves the right to hold a Showcase concert at the close of

competitions. Competitors will be required to take part only if called upon. An approved technical rehearsal may be required.

8. SAFETY

8.1 RISK - Competitors acknowledge that they compete at their own risk. 8.2 Performances should be designed to be safe for the performer, audience and theatre.

Any ‘unusual’ items should be discussed with RSSS and the theatre technician first. 8.3 THEATRE REQUIREMENTS – All competitors performing in Her Majesty’s Theatre must

read “theatre rules” and the “risk assessment” on the RSSS website www.royalsouthstreet.com.au/risk_assessment, and act where relevant.

8.4 The theatre technician and stage manager may prevent a planned performance if in their

opinion technical safety is inadequate. Risk assessment forms (JSEA) are required for any performances using props that have ANY risk associated with their use including things such as balls, ladders, or wheeled items for example. Forms are available from our website and MUST be submitted at/by the deadline list on our website which is at least two weeks prior to commencement of the discipline. See www.royalsouthstreet.com.au/risk_assessment for discipline deadline dates. Please contact the RSSS office if you are unsure.

8.5 The theatre technician, stage manager or adjudicator has the right to stop any item if

they are of the opinion a competitor has suffered a serious injury, or there is a possible risk of serious injury.

8.6 Items so stopped (8.4, 8.5) may be repeated and adjudicated normally, at an appropriate time, subject to the opinion of the adjudicator and stage manager on the nature of the danger. See safety requirement ACF Rules xi, xii.

8.7 Minor accidents which occur due to faulty property, choreography, or costume design,

are not necessarily a reason for such a stop and restart of an item. Only the ultimate safety of the competitor is to be considered.

8.8 All patrons must observe directions or commands given by theatre personnel, Royal

South Street Society officers and fire officers. 8.9 In the event of evacuation of the theatre, patrons should comply with directions from Her

Majesty’s Theatre trained staff.

Her Majesty’s Theatre Rules

Please note these rules relate to Occupational Health and Safety legislation or emergency evacuation procedures and are in place for the safety of all users of Her Majesty’s Theatre. 1. BACKSTAGE 1.1 No machinery or equipment (including hairdryers, curling wands, irons, portable audio

devises) or any electrical distribution panels, lights, projectors or other electrical installation equipment or fitting are to be brought into the theatre without being tested and tagged complying with Australian/New Zealand standard AS/NZs3760:2000.

1.2 Footwear is required to be worn at all times in all areas outside of the stage area.

1.3 Babies, toddlers and children are not to be in the stage area at any time unless they are performing in the item. No prams, pushers to be in the corridors at any time.

1.4 All corridors, stairwell and entrances or building access areas are to be kept clear at all times. Any items left in the corridors will be relocated to a more appropriate storage area. (This means no sitting/playing, swinging of rods or clubs, rehearsing on the stairs or corridors, storing of equipment, costumes etc outside dressing rooms or in the corridors.)

1.5 Stage access lift is only to be loaded under the direct supervision of Her Majesty’s staff.

1.6 All stage access, egress, fire escapes and exits, fire fighting equipment areas and access to prompt corner must be kept clear at all times.

1.7 All valuables are the responsibility of the owner and are left in dressing rooms at own risk. (We can not monitor access to all areas at all times).

2. PROPS & STAGE SCENERY

2.1 All items to be rigged must be structurally sound, in good order, with correct fixtures for hanging and of fire retarded material. The technical staff of Her Majesty’s Theatre reserves the right to refuse to hang and fly any item which is deemed, in their opinion unsafe to do so. This decision is final.

2.2 All items of set must be structurally sound and in good working order. The technical staff of Her Majesty’s Theatre reserves the right to refuse the use of items that are deemed unsafe, unstable, not suitable for the task they are required to perform, particularly in relation to the rake of Her Majesty’s stage. (Refer to risk assessment information) On any Item with swivel casters a minimum of 2 swivel casters must be lockable. (Refer to risk assessment information).

2.3 Children (under 12) are not permitted to set up props, scenery on stage or assist in hanging flown items during afternoon or evening change over.

2.4 No LARGE sets or props are to be carried to or from the stage via the back stairs from stage door. We reserve the right to refuse items. (See prop building advice for guidance).

2.5 All other costumes and props must enter and leave the theatre via the rear stage door or Unicorn Lane. Access of these items through the main foyer will be refused.

2.6 No blue-tack used to hold down prop or set items on stage. (See risk assessment information)

3. STAGE 3.1 No items made of glass or ceramic are permitted on stage at any time 3.2 No aerosol cans on the stage level at any time. 3.3 The pit area in front of the proscenium is installed for safety and is not a performance

space. The area in front of the white line is not lit. Please do not proceed in front of this white line.

3.4 No mobile phones to be used in the stage area. This includes smart phones and apps. 4. DRESSING ROOMS 4.1 No preparation of wardrobe or hair outside of dressing rooms (unless it is outside the

building) this means the spraying of hairspray, fake tan or sprinkling of glitter.)

4.2 No food or drinks (bottled water excepted) are to be consumed in the dressing rooms. 4.3 Adhesive tape, gaffa, masking tape or blu tack is not to be used on dressing room walls,

doors or in the corridors.

5. GENERAL 5.1 Lewis Street at the rear of Her Majesty’s Theatre is a public street and all road

regulations apply, please observe all road regulations, including the restrictions and parking signs.

5.2 No non performing children 12 and under are to be left unsupervised in the building at any time.

In sections where perpetual trophies are presented annually, the said trophies will be held by the winner for 11 months, when they must be returned to the office. All holders of trophies will be responsible for their safe custody, engraving and return at their own expense.

GENERAL RULES

DEFINITIONS: a) CLUB - means club or college, composite teams are NOT permitted. b) Competition Official – the person approved by relevant national body/state association

to undertake the duties set out in the breach of rules/review process. Must adhere to the specified roles and responsibilities as set out by ACF (including the confidentiality agreement/role as observer).

1 a) CRITIQUE – Critiques will only be available at the end of a division, unless there is a

penalty. Critiques will only be given to coaches. b) CORE ITEMS – Free Exercises, Rod Exercises, Club Swinging, Figure March, Aesthetic

and Rhythmical Aesthetic. FANCY ITEMS – Song/s with Actions, Song and Dance, Character/Folk Dance,

Rhythmic Interpretation, Calisthenic Spectacular, Calisthenic Revue. SOLO ITEMS – Graceful Solo c) STAGE AREA

The performing area of the stage is approximately 8.46m wide by 11.7m deep. The visible working area of the stage includes the area behind the back curtain when curtain is open and the apron area. The distance between black curtain when down and cyc is 1.650 reducing stage depth to 10.05m. The stage slopes towards the audience at 37mm per metre length. Please be aware of this when constructing props. The area from the front curtain to the start of the thrust is 700mm. Taped side lines clarify the stage area. Legs should abut side lines where possible. Front and back lines where marked are for safety purposes only. Stage markings for ‘down spot lighting’ allowed. Competitors must work within the working stage area for all items including entry and exit which must be from side or back of stage.

d) CURTAINS FRONT CURTAIN – Means house curtain. The front curtain and mid curtain may only be used for fancy items, except front curtain for Tinies core items and aesthetic items; if starting in a black out. Black side curtains must not be moved. If they are purposely moved a breach of rules penalty will apply. Where that breach occurs within the line of sight of the adjudicator/s it is the adjudicator/s call. Where the breach occurs outside the line of sight of the adjudicator/s, the stage manager will inform the adjudicator of the breach. Black back curtain must not be brought forward of the tape markings on the floor. There is 1.650m between black and cyc.

e) LIGHTING STANDARD LIGHTING – This is fixed stage lighting with no alterations allowed during

the entire section. There is a standard rig plotted for these sections. The basic state is bright light with minimal shadows on the faces of the competitors. For items which work to the white curtain line it should be noted that it may not be possible to light this area without shadows. STANDARD lighting MUST be used in the following sections: Free Exercises, Club Swinging, Rods, Figure Marching.

FANCY LIGHTING – Flashing lights, mirror ball, scrim curtain lighting, follow spots, ultra-violet lights, gobos, (only theatre gobos can be used) cyc lights, 9 fixed spots, curtain special for entrances and exits through the centre back curtains, and alterations of lighting states such as dimming, colour washes etc. Any other permissible special effect

lighting. Hand held 240V lights and spotlights on stands of any kind are not allowed. strobe lighting, laser derived lighting, back corner audience blinders – not allowed for health and safety reasons. Blackouts may only be used at the start and/or end of an item. DATA PROJECTOR – is available for use in all fancy items sections. Hired from RSSS. Clubs must supply their own operator and use a USB or a DVD, do not load onto computer. DVD’s must be formatted to play as a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation or formatted as a DVD. Audio on a DVD is acceptable but a separate back up CD, dedicated USB or DVD’s are required. CD-RW Discs are not compatible.

f) SMOKE MACHINE – May be used but only if modern, safe water based "fog fluid" is used. Smoke machine can be hired from RSSS. Safety is paramount in what ever you do. No use of smoke machine for Tinies.

g) REMOTE DEVICES – May be used as specified item rules. May be operated by a

person on or off the stage. h) STAGE DRESSING – Is props or scenery, standard steps, modules, drums, ramps and

platforms arranged on stage prior to the commencement of the item, to create a mood or atmosphere for an item. Props can only be placed side stage at the end of the previous section, but can be stored in containers prior to this. Props must be made to stand safely, taking into account the rake of the stage. If props are fitted with wheels they must be able to be locked. Legs of flats must be hinged. Staples must not be used on stage area when assembling props. If props are unstable, for safety reasons the theatre technician or stage manager has the right to request that they not be used. Persons other than registered team members are not permitted to hold props on stage. Props must not be any higher than 3 metres, and pre assembled props backstage must not exceed 3 metres in width, see General Conditions 5.6 and RSSS website under “props”.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the restricted space backstage, the number and size of articles used in stage dressing must be restricted to three pieces of scenery or three pieces can be joined to make one scene. Prop panel maximum size to be 2400 x 1200 and two panels can be assembled together to make one, or six to make one large back drop scene. No more than six 2400 x 1200 panels to be on the stage.

Stage dressing must be set and competitors ready to commence on stage within 5 minutes maximum, after which a bell will sound and the item will commence. If this is not STRICTLY adhered to in 2013, stage dressing could be banned.

1. STANDARD STEPS as provided and specified by the competition committee. In order to save space back stage, the Royal South Street Society have available a set of steps, .7m high x 1.83m wide x 1.53m deep (4 sections). The .7m steps will have silver, gold or black frills attached to the front which can be used by teams who desire to use steps in fancy Items. Teams are not permitted to bring their own steps.

i) FLYS. No flown scenery to be used. j) SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

Occupational Health & Safety issues must be taken into consideration at all times.

Ballarat Rule: Stage dressings must not be put on stage or taken off stage in a blackout. E.g. In front of the front curtain after it goes up.

i) MASKS - are permitted, BUT the safety and health elements must be the responsibility of the coach.

ii) No drawing pins or glass glitter to be used. iii) Props and scenery must be made to stand safely, taking into account the rake of

the stage. If there are any safety concerns, they will be removed from the stage at the discretion of the stage manager

iv) MODULES, DRUMS, RAMPS AND PLATFORMS must have a firm top and firm base of at least of equal dimension. Height to be no more than three times the minimum base dimension.

v) Accessories must not be attached to any curtains in any way. vi) If baled hay is used, it must be covered in plastic sheeting. vii) Live animals not permitted. viii) Not applicable to RSSS competitions. ix) No lighted candles, helium balloons (see General Condition 5.5), sparklers or any

naked flame or pyrotechnic devices permitted. x) Strobe and laser lighting not permitted. xi) In the event of an injury during a performance, the stage manager/chairman in

consultation with the coach will have responsibility for stopping that item. Should that action not be forthcoming, adjudicators have the right to stop the performance. The adjudicator/s will ring their bell to cease the item. The team may re-present their item, minus the injured participant and will be eligible to be awarded a place. Other rules are applicable, e.g. minimum number. In the event that the participant is deemed NOT to be injured the team may re-present with that participant and be eligible for placing. See General Rules 8.4, 8,5 and 8.6

xii) In the event of a hazard on stage, the stage manager and/or coach have responsibility for stopping that item. The adjudicator may stop the item if a perceived hazard occurs on stage. The team may re-present their item once the hazard has been cleared.

k) Risk Assessment Requirements See General Rule 8.3. If using Guns of any kind as props, they must NOT be or look authentic. If a reasonable

person thinks it looks like a gun, it is a gun. Refer HMT Firearms Policy and please check well in advance of competitions with HMT technical manager. Swords, knives etc used as props, must be blunt and preferably made of wood or plastic. 1. AEROSOL CANS – Must not be used on stage unless prior approval is obtained from RSSS.

2. No bubble, snow or other type of machines to be used.

l) Technical Fault A technical fault is defined as something that affects the performance of the competitors and not the presentation of the item. It will be caused primarily by a power, musical source or equipment failure and not an incorrect lighting or mishap with digital imaging or stage dressing. Responsibility for calling a technical fault will where possible lie with the coach and the stage manager in consultation with each other.

PLEASE NOTE: No talcum powder is to be used.

2. AGGREGATE TROPHIES. Points for aggregate trophies will be awarded as follows: First, 6; Second, 4; Third, 2, HM, 1. Should a club secure more than one prize in any group section, only one award will count for the aggregate trophy. Where an item is divided into two divisions, aggregate points will only be allowed to the 1st division, but full prize money will be awarded in both divisions. In the event of a tie for any prize, full

prize money will be paid and full aggregate points awarded. Tie in aggregate, each to receive a trophy. 3. BREACH OF RULES

Execution of a banned movement in competition will result in disqualification in the item in which it was performed. i) Each rule breached (including technical rules as stated) will be penalised by a deduction of 10 points. Actual deduction of the points to be carried out by the adjudicator/s. Any penalty incurred – the coach to be notified immediately. ii) Right of Review as per ACF Rules. iii) Curtain rules breaches as per General Conditions 1d.

4. AGES Tinies 7 years and under Sub Juniors 9 years and under on 31 December Juniors 12 years and under of the year of Intermediates 16 years and under Competition. Seniors 16 years and over 5. COMPETITION

i) ENTRY FORMS must be signed by coach to verify that all competitors are competing in correct age groups and that coaches have viewed the banned movements’ video. ii) Clubs must submit a list of all competitors in each item, on a form and at a time as directed by the competitions committee.

iii) If a query is raised on ages/registrations, the club concerned may be requested to produce a birth certificate/ proof of registration, within 7 days. If proven that they have breached these rules, the club will be disqualified from any item in which that member/s has/have competed. iv) No competitor is permitted to compete with more than one club in any one competition. v) A competitor or team cannot compete in 2 age sections in the same item. vi) Competitors must appear in one (1) core item to compete in a fancy item, excluding Tinies. Solo competitors must compete in two (2) core items. vii) A team will only be permitted to work out of programmed order under extenuating circumstances.

6. MINIMUM NUMBER i) The specified minimum number of competitors (8) must remain on stage and be

visible throughout the item, excluding entry/opening and exit/closing. Minimum number may be exceeded.

ii) Teams with less than the minimum number (8) will incur a penalty of 5 points. (Breach of rules). Maximum of 2 less competitors permitted to perform. iii) The minimum number of team members must be on stage at twenty (20.0) seconds from the commencement of ALL core items. (Excludes minimal rules).

7. FALSE STARTS

i) If the music has commenced and then is found to be incorrect, provided the team member has not entered onto the stage no penalty will be incurred. ii) If a team makes a false start, 10 points are to be deducted by the adjudicator/s, unless notified by the stage manager/chairman that the item has been stopped for technical or safety reasons. iii) In solo/team competitions, if the competitor/s leave the stage before the completion of their performance for a reason other than a technical problem they have the option of repeating the performance however, are ineligible to gain a placing.

iv) In solo/team competitions, if the competitor/s leave the stage before the completion of their performance due to a technical problem they have the option of repeating the performance and are eligible to gain a placing.

8. CAMERAS, TAPE RECORDERS, VIDEOS, MOBILE PHONES AND PAGERS The use of these by unauthorised persons during competitions is strictly prohibited.

9. PROMPTING. Prompting during the performance of any item is strictly prohibited. In the first instance of prompting the stage manager will issue a warning. Second and subsequent occurrences will each incur a breach of rules penalty.

10. TIMING Setup/removal time – As per ACF Rules and Regulations. i) The start of any item shall be from, the entry of the first competitor on to the working stage area, or view of the first competitor on the stage area, or view of the first competitor at the opening/lift of the front curtain when used, or view of the first competitor at lights up/on. The finish of an item shall be: the exit of last competitor from the stage working area or view of the last competitor on the stage working area, or at the close of front curtain when used, or at blackout.

ii) TIMING LIMITS TINIES – NO PENALTY Core items 1 ½ - 2 ½ minutes Fancy items 2 - 3 minutes SUB-JUNIORS

11. ADJUDICATOR/S

i) Communication with the adjudicators either by competitors, coaches or other interested parties during competitions is prohibited, except for rule 3ii, and council reserve the right to disqualify a team/competitor for any breach of this rule. ii) The adjudicator’s decision is FINAL, and no correspondence or verbal query will be entered into regarding any placing in any class, in any section, in any division, except for rule 3ii. iii) Protests will NOT be allowed in 2013. To be reviewed in 2014

12. COACHES All coaches, (team/soloists) must have level 1 accreditation, and must be registered with their state association.

13. DRUMS Not available.

14. GRADING i) Teams will only be accepted if they have reached C.V.I. grading level 7. ii) Clubs are graded into eight sections by C.V.I. viz Championship and 1-7. Clubs are notified each year as to their grading. A club can enter teams only in the section in which it is graded, but may compete for a section in a higher grade if there is no equivalent section in its own grade (limited to two sections). Entries for Tinies will only be accepted from Championship to Division Four graded teams.

15. MUSIC Only one item per tape or CD. CD’s have to be top quality, if not they may malfunction.

Tape or CD to be given to music player as soon as coach comes side stage. 16. PRACTICE

No team to practice on stage or side stage during the competitions. Refer General Rules 4.6.

17. THEATRE REQUIREMENTS See Her Majesty’s Theatre requirements for complete list.

a) Electricals. All leads, appliances, lights and stage property lighting for use on 240 volts within the theatre, must have a current safety compliance tag. This includes any electrical item used in the dressing rooms. (E.g. hot rollers, CD or tape players.) Batteries must be sealed and unspillable.

b) Dressing Rooms. Decorating of rooms and passage ways not permitted. Only club banners may be hung. c) Leg Tan. Competitors’ feet and legs must be covered before entering auditorium. d) Footwear. We recommend that coaches/assistants wear appropriate footwear side stage, due to electrical traps in the floor and other hazards. e) Sand Bags. Only HMT sandbags to be used on stage. f) Elastic Straps (Octopus straps). Are not to be used on sets or props.

18. TINIES Entry and exit optional. Song/s with Action & Folk Dance - prior to the item

commencing, props and competitors may be placed on the stage and left to the close of curtain. No timing penalty. No smoke to be used.

ITEM RULES 1. CORE ITEMS –

Ballarat Rule Only: Three items (disciplines) coach’s choice to be advised when checking in, must be presented without props or scenery, only standard steps, modules, drums, ramps and platforms permitted to be placed behind the back black curtain in the three nominated items. 2. Each arm and club may swing independently of the other but on the same vertical plane.

No strobe lighting, laser lights, hand held lights and lighting on stands of any kind or back corner audience blinders. Delays will not be tolerated. Only one item per tape or CD. CD’s have to be top quality, if not they may malfunction.

1. Contemporary Vocal - For modern style singing only. Singers who sing a classical style please refer to the Classical Vocal sections. Each competitor will sing one contemporary arrangement (own selection), there is no restriction on the age of the song. Freedom of interpretation within the style is acceptable.

2. Country Music sections– Singers must choose a country song which must be sung in a

country style. Adjudication will be based on singers who stylistically represent good country technique and song choice.

3. Original sheet music is not required for this section. (A copy of music for adjudicator is

not required)

4. Competitors may perform to a professional backing tape or CD which may contain backing vocals only (i.e. no principal/lead vocal allowed), self accompany the item, or sing to a live instrumental backing group of no more than 4.

5. The Society will provide: grand piano, microphones both roving and standard (up to four)

and tape deck & CD player. Tapes must be cued.

6. A tape/CD player operator will be provided for you. Tapes must be named, cued, marked on correct side, and handed to the operator before the performance. The CD player can handle commercial CD and CD-R discs, but not CD-RW (re-recordable) discs, and not MP3 recordings. It is recommended that there be at least 30 seconds of blank tape at the end of each item recorded and preferably only 1 track per CD.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

To be read in conjunction with General Conditions

1. AGE. The age of the competitor shall be taken as that on 1st of January of the current year. Birth certificate or proof of age may be requested at any time. See General Conditions 2. “Open” means any age.

2. AGGREGATE AWARDS. Points for aggregate will be awarded thus - First Place 6,

Second 4, Third 2, and HM 1. (See General Conditions 6). For solo aggregates - All solo sections are scored. Except novice sections, For school aggregate - only groups and troupes are scored. 3. ASSISTANCE. Teachers or non-members of groups, who are not on stage, are not to

give assistance in singing to groups or solos performing on stage. 4. CURTAINS 4.1 Front curtain will only be used for Demi-Character solos and Demi-Character duos/trios,

and all group work. No curtain for under 6 solos. 4.2 Mid curtain may only be used for group work. 4.3 Scrim curtain may only be used for group work

5. ENTRIES 5.1 NUMBERS OF ENTRIES. Where entries in a section are excessive, extra divisions or

heats and finals may be arranged at the committee's discretion. Where numbers are inadequate sections may be combined or cancelled.

5.2 CHANGING DIVISIONS. Once the current guide book is prepared, competitors are not permitted to change between divisions of a section, except in exceptional circumstances. Requests for changes must be made in writing, and if allowed and accepted, the competitor will dance for a critique only! However, the dance will still allow the competitor eligibility for a championship section.

6. LIMITED COMPETITION. 6.1 ONE APPEARANCE. A competitor or group can only appear once in any one section. A

dancer cannot enter twice under different schools, or re-appear in different groups of the same school in the one section.

6.2 NO REPEAT. An item by any competitor, specifically the choreography, is not to be performed again by that competitor in any other section. See General Conditions 1.

6.3 DANCE COPYRIGHT. Choreography, costume and music of a dance are copyright of the teacher who taught the item. Students must have permission of the original teacher in order to perform the dance at this competition. A teacher may withdraw permission at any stage.

7. MUSICIANS. The society provides an upright piano. 8. PROPS AND SCENERY. All props for use in Her Majesty’s Theatre must comply with safety regulations as stated in

the RSSS website under “Props”. Failure to comply will result in the props being banned. 8.1 These must be made to stand safely on a stage sloping at 37mm per metre length. They

must not be attached to theatre curtains, and must not damage the stage floor. See 16.5. 8.2 Props and scenic items should be kept to a minimum. All items should be labelled with

competitor’s name or school and age group. 8.3 The society will provide a small table, chair, 3 boxes (90cm x 60cm x 31cm high), and a

set of steps (The set is 1.83m wide x 0.7m high, with 3 levels), and a ballet barrè 1.8 metres long.

8.4 Scenery/back drops may be hung from fly bars prior to the section, by arrangement with the duty technician. (Scene cloths should be 6.5 – 7 metres in height). Intention to fly scenery must be notified on the teacher’s “lighting cue sheet”. Choice of fly bar will be determined by order of request & operational limitations. Scenery must comply with safety standards such as anchor points and fire proofing, or will not be hung.

8.5 All props, back drops etc must be removed from the stage area after the time of use, and not stored back stage except with special permission from the stage manager.

8.6 Internal combustion engines are not to be operated on stage. If present as part of a prop, it must be drained of all fuel and oil before entering the theatre.

8.7 WEAPONS. Guns for use as props, must NOT be or look authentic. Swords, knives etc used as props, must be blunt and preferably made of wood or plastic.

8.8 CHEMICALS Aerosol cans must not be used on stage unless prior approval is obtained from HMT tech or RSSS. Talcum powder or similar is not to be used in props, costumes, or hair. Rosin is not to be used on the stage.

8.9 Glass or ceramic items are not allowed on stage. 9. PERFORMANCE. 9.1 REHEARSALS. No practice is allowed on stage during the dance competitions, except for

Championship sections, subject to prior arrangements.

9.2 STAGE CHECK. Any dancer unfamiliar with the stage at Her Majesty’s Theatre may walk on and view the stage prior to the morning and afternoon session, as directed by the stage manager. There shall be no warming up, no practice, no marking through, and no setting of formations during a “stage check”.

9.3 REGISTRATION. Dancers should book in with the registrar before the start of the morning or afternoon or evening session. Absolute deadline is 5 minutes before the start of their section! Beyond that, competitors may not be allowed to perform. See General Rule 4.7 re withdrawals.

9.4 HELPERS. For assistance with props, a dancer is only allowed up to 2 helpers (in addition to teachers). Helpers must leave the stage area after the item.

9.5 WARM UP. During sessions, students waiting to perform may warm up quietly back stage behind the black curtain. Never on OP side stage (stage right).

9.6 TROUPE STARTS. When called on stage prior to starting performance, troupe members must go straight to their start positions. There shall be NO marking, blocking of troupes, or rehearsal whilst waiting on stage.

9.7 TROUPE NUMBERS. In under 17 and open age troupe sections, the maximum number of dancers on the performance area of the stage in any one item shall be 30.

10 RESTARTS. 10.1 A competitor who commences performing an item and stops, and is allowed to re-start the

item, will receive a critique but no official marks. Except as follows; 10.2 Commencing with the wrong music may be tolerated, provided the fault is quickly

corrected, and the dance has not begun. 10.3 If serious interference with, or premature cessation of a performance is caused by a fault

of the society’s management or equipment, or by an accident beyond any ones reasonable control, then that item may be repeated and adjudicated accordingly. See also Safety Rule 16 and General Rule, Safety 8. A performance-in-crisis may be stopped by the adjudicator, teacher, theatre technician, or stage manager. A repeat performance will be allowed, subject to adjudicator, safety and practical considerations. Adjudication will be made on the first performance up to the point of disaster, and on any work after that point, in the repeat performance.

11 SECTIONS 11.1 Ballet - shall be based on classical techniques. In solos, short ballet tutus or short skirts

to be worn by girls; properties and hand held accessories NOT to be used. 11.2 Demi-Character - a clear portrayal of a character or story by acting ability and expressive

dancing using classical technique. 11.3 Modern Dance - shall include neo-classical and contemporary. Not jazz, disco, musical

comedy. Note: In under 14 years and up, contemporary styles are separated to an individual section.

11.4 Song and Dance - any dance style can be used, but no tapping allowed. 11.5 Song and Tap - dance style shall be tapping only. 11.6 Song & Dance and Song & Tap - All vocal work must be performed live by members of

the item. If recorded music is used, it must NOT contain any vocalization (e.g. singing, speaking, shouts, harmony backing etc). No assistance with singing (see 3).

11.7 Tap - No tapping in background music 11.8 Jazz - shall include jazz, disco, cabaret, and musical comedy (musical theatre) styles. 11.9 Groups and Troupes - minimum number of 6 performers. See 9.7 11.10 NOVICE - a competitor who at the time of entry has never won a 1st, 2nd or 3rd prize in

any solo event, in any age group, at ANY COMPETITION anywhere. A novice may choose to enter one dance in either a novice section or a normal non-novice section. All other dances will be entered in the normal non-novice sections. THE “NOVICE DANCE” CAN NOT BE REPEATED IN ANOTHER SECTION. If a competitor appears in a novice section they must not compete in that same style in the open section equivalent.

Students entering championship sections must not enter a novice section with a same style of dance. (E.g. Classical championship cannot perform a classical novice.) NO ITEM CAN BE REPEATED.

12 SPECIAL EFFECTS 12.1 Special lighting, scrim curtain, or other effects only to be used for troupes or groups. 12.2 Special lighting by theatre technician must have prior arrangement by way of lighting forms

or plotting sessions, organised within guidelines set out with lighting information to teachers. If a lighting form is not submitted only standard lighting (as per solos) will be provided.

12.3 Protected lights may be attached to competitors’ scenery and backdrops, but not to theatre curtains.

12.4 Naked flames, fuel lamps, lighted cigarettes, fireworks or apparatus capable of causing fire or smoke are NOT permitted. Approved smoke machines excepted. See 12.5.

12.5 Smoke/fog may be used, but only if modern, safe, water-based "fog fluid" is used. Smoke machine may be hired from RSSS. Safety is paramount in whatever you do.

12.6 Bubble or snow generators are not allowed 12.7 DATA PROJECTOR is available for use in troupe sections. Hired from RSSS. Teachers

must provide their own operator. The RSSS pc computer must be used. Images to be provided on a dedicated CD, DVD or USB memory stick, and must be programmed to play as a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation. Only one item on each CD, etc presented. Audio must be submitted on a separate CD, not part of the PowerPoint presentation.

13 STAGE AREA 13.1 AREA: The performing area of the stage is approximately 8.5m wide by 9.28 m deep (for

Solos) or 10.81m deep (for Troupes). Stage slopes towards the audience at 37mm per metre length. Height to below borders (top curtains) is 5 metres; to middle positions of fly bar is 6 metres.

13.2 ORCHESTRA PIT: The area from the front curtain to the edge of the stage is 800mm. An orchestra pit lies across the front of the stage and it has a drop of 900mm to a solid surface. There shall be NO jumping into the orchestra pit as part of any performance. The pit may be covered by an extended stage. This extension is not suitable for performance.

14 MUSIC PLAYER 14.1 A tape/CD player operator will be provided for you. Tapes must be named, cued, marked

on correct side, and handed to the operator before the performance. The CD player can handle commercial CD and CD-R discs, but not CD-RW (re-recordable) discs, and not MP 3 recordings. It is recommended that there be at least be 30 seconds of blank tape at the end of each item recorded, and preferably only 1 track per CD.

14.2 Music recordings must be made with a good quality program on good quality CD or tape media. IPods and similar devices cannot be used.

14.3 The adjudicator and the committee shall have the right to limit the volume level of the music to a safe level. (See General Rule 3.6).

15 TIME LIMITS 15.1 Performance time is taken from the start of correct music or movement of the competitor

(which ever occurs first) until the competitor stops dancing, leaves the stage or the curtain falls (which ever occurs first). Timing does not include the reverence or tag.

15.2 Tap solo, duo and trio - 2.5 minutes maximum. 15.3 All other dance styles - solo, duo and trio - 3 minutes maximum. 15.4 Song and Dance, Song and Tap - solo, duo, trio - 4 minutes maximum. 15.5 Special Tap Solo - Championships (390, 391, 394, 395) - 4 minutes maximum. 15.6 Troupes and Groups - all styles - 5 minutes maximum. 15.7 Preparation Time: Time allowed to prepare the stage is limited to 1 minute for all solos,

duos, trios and troupes. Note rule 9.6. Song and Dance and Song and Tap Troupes have a maximum of STRICTLY 5 minutes.

16 SAFETY 16.1 ELECTRICALS

All leads, appliances, lights and stage prop lighting for use on 240 volts within the Theatre, must have a current safety compliance tag. This includes any 240 volt circuit supplied by a battery inverter, and any electrical item used in the dressing rooms (e.g. Hot hair rollers, CD / tape players). (In service safety inspections and testing to Australian Standard 3760, can be performed by your local A or B Grade Electrician). See General Rule 5.7. Any batteries used in a performance, must be sealed and unspillable.

16.2 STAGE AWARENESS. See dance rules 8.1, and 9.2. 16.3 DANCE SAFETY. Performances should be designed to be safe for everyone.

Safety concerns will over-ride all competition rules. Performances will be stopped or disallowed if safety is deemed inadequate as determined by the theatre technician, adjudicator, or stage manager. Any potentially unsafe choreographic movement (e.g. aerials, lifts, etc) may have an on-stage practice, by request to/of, and under the supervision of the technical supervisor or the stage manager. See also dance Rule 9.7 and General Rule 8.1 through to 8.8.

16.4 DANGEROUS DANCING. Any dance requiring the use of wheels (eg bicycles, tricycles, scooters, skateboards, roller-skates, etc, mobile props), balls, ladders, throwing of items and any performance in front of the house curtain at Her Majesty’s Theatre, must have a “risk assessment” form completed and lodged with RSSS by or before 2 weeks prior to the start of the dance competition. Non-compliance may result in these props or item being banned by Her Majesty’s Theatre Staff. Forms are available on the RSSS website.

16.5 PROPS. Props must be designed for use on a sloping stage (37mm per metre), and to enable the use of sandbags for hold-down. Glass electrical globes, and electrical wiring, must be recessed or caged or protected to prevent damage or being touched. Ladders must be industrial and a competitor (soloist or a group/troupe member) can only climb the first two steps. The Society will provide one industrial A frame ladder.

16.6 MEDIC-ALERT. Medic-Alert bracelets, etc, may be worn during performances. The stage manager must be advised beforehand.

16.7 THEATRE REQUIREMENTS. All competitors, whether solos or groups, performing in Her Majesty’s Theatre must read “theatre rules” and the “risk assessment checklist” on the RSSS website, and act where relevant.

NOVICE SECTIONS: A novice dancer must NOT have won a place at any competition anywhere. A novice dancer may choose to enter one dance in novice sections 300 – 305. See rule 11.10. All other dances will be entered in sections 315 – 395.

The debating procedures will follow the generally accepted procedures in The Australia-Asian Debating Guide. To assist in your preparation RSSS has published an adjudicator’s assessment sheet which can be obtained from the Royal South Street website www.royalsouthstreet.com.au Each team will consist of three speakers, who will speak alternately, plus a nominated substitute speaker-in case of emergency. A student can be a speaker in only one debating team. The four highest scoring winning teams in each section will progress to the semi-finals with the final two teams competing for that section’s challenge cup. EACH SCHOOL IS ADVISED TO CAREFULLY CONSIDER THE NUMBER OF TEAMS IT ENTERS AND ENSURE THAT THOSE TEAMS ARE READY TO COMPETE WHEN REQUIRED. This is essential as the Challenge Cup is not an elimination competition and if a team had to be withdrawn it would result in their opposing team not being able to continue in the competition.

Schools will be provided with a timetable and their debating topic/s in good time before the competition. A chairperson will control the debate. This chairperson will welcome and introduce each team, the audience, the adjudicators, timekeepers and announce the topic. The timekeeper will sound a warning bell one minute before the end of the speaker’s allotted time. Two bells will indicate the end of the allotted time. After each debate the adjudicator will give a verbal critique and announce the result. The adjudicator’s written critique and the breakdown of the total results will be forwarded to the school before the semi-finals and finals. Being a competition that requires an equal number of teams in each section the last team seeking entry may not be able to be timetabled. Every effort will be made to correct such an imbalance before making the decision not to accept the entry of an individual team.

HERALD SUN ARIA CONDITIONS 1 This contest is open to any Australasian person who has been resident in Australasia for at

least 5 years immediately prior to October 1, 2013. Competitors must be at least 19 and not over 32 years of age on December 31, 2013. (E.g. Competitor can be aged 32 years and 11 months - but must not have attained 33rd birthday prior to 31st December). First prize winners of previous Herald Sun Aria contests are not eligible to enter. In the semi-final and final the adjudicators will consider the singer’s potential as well as performance.

2 Competitors must enter in their own names and be prepared to furnish birth certificates and proof of residency.

3 Competitors must compete in the order in which their names appear in the official program, unless officially authorised or directed otherwise.

4 The closing date for entries is Friday 3rd May, 2013. Late entries will not be accepted. 5 Competitors must submit the full names of four arias from grand opera by Friday 23rd

August 2013. Competitors will be notified by email and all aria selections must be submitted by this date.

6 Competitors in the heats will sing an aria of their own choice from the four submitted. In the semi-final, competitors must sing a different aria from that which they sang in the heat, which will be chosen by the adjudicators from the four submitted. At the final in the Melbourne Recital Centre, it is intended that competitors sing two arias of their choice, from the four submitted, at least one of which has not previously been sung by that competitor in either the heats or the semi final, however, this may be varied by the adjudicators in order to accommodate orchestral considerations. All arias are to be performed in the original language and key.

7 Sixteen (16) will be selected from the preliminary tests to compete in a semi-final at Royal South Street, from which six (6) will be selected to appear in the final at Melbourne Recital Centre.

8 The six (6) finalists must be available, if required, for interview in Ballarat on Saturday 24th August at the conclusion of the semi-final and must, by that time, have completed the questionnaire provided to all contestants by the Herald Sun.

9 An Official Royal South Street Society accompanist will be provided for the preliminary heats and semi-final in Ballarat. The accompanist fee doesn’t include any private rehearsals arranged directly with the accompanist. Both arias at the final will be sung to orchestral accompaniment and the finalists will be required for piano rehearsal in the afternoon before the final and orchestra rehearsal on the morning of the final.

Ensemble competitors will not be permitted to substitute any of the supplied instruments with their own, but may add to the kit if necessary.

13. EXEMPTION FROM PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

14. AUDIENCE

School educational groups of 10 or more, for a fee of $2 per student, may be part of the audience, providing they are effectively supervised. Students that are playing in an evening session would need to be registered as a school group and pay to be a part of the audience in an afternoon session. STAGE MEASUREMENTS: Competitive area of stage is 8.5m wide by 10.81m deep. The stage is raked towards the audience at 37mm per metre length, please be aware of this when constructing sets.

LIGHTING REQUIREMENTS:

A lighting form must be filled in for each play and a cued script provided if special effects are required. A lighting technician is supplied.

STAGE EFFECTS:

Lighted candles, sparklers, lighted cigarettes and any naked flames are NOT permitted. Any flat or curtain brought on stage must be fire proofed. Approved smoke or fog effects are permitted and can be supplied at a moderate fee. Own smoke/fog machine may be used but only if it is safety tested and tagged and water based “fog fluid” is used. Nothing is to be attached to the theatre’s curtains and legs. Fire arms or shooting blanks – proof of appropriate licence/permission must be provided 14 days prior to performance. All electrical equipment must have been tested and tagged by a competent person to comply with the Australian/New Zealand standard AS/NZs3760: 2000.

AUDIO REQUIREMENTS:

Sound equipment is provided (tape, cd, or mini-disc) and companies are to provide their own sound operators.

AWARDS:

The adjudicator has the right to withhold any award. Awards will be presented at the conclusion of the play festival. A representative of each company is to be available at the adjudication for awards presentation.

681 IMPROVISATION: Death in a Minute Open Explanation: The adjudicator provides the location and one occupation. The group must begin their improvisation immediately, with one competitor adopting the occupation, and the group using the location appropriately. The improvisation can last no longer than one minute and must conclude with the ‘death’ of one member only of the group. Groups will be adjudicated on their timing, interaction, creativity and ensemble work. Up to four people per group. Time Limit: 1 minute. 682 IMPROVISATION Explanation: Each team enters the stage and draws a topic from a hat. Topics may include locations (E.g. ‘At the beach’), a line of dialogue (E.g. ‘I told you not to’), a situation (E.g. ‘A bank robbery’), or similar.
